List Group Label

Work with your friend. Look at the list of words and group them in a way that makes sense to you.

Make predictions on what you believe will be in the reading.

Rules for Conversational Discussion Groups

a) Speak one at a time and stay on subject

b) If you say yes/no, state why

c) Ask questions when discussion is quiet

d) Let all people talk

e) Back up ideas with information from the text

f) Back up ideas with personal experiences

Technique # 4

Character Quotes

Get into a group of 3-4. Read the quote and make a listing of characteristics you think might describe the character.

Rules You Will Want to Remember

Teach vocabulary first

Ask students to predict what will be in the text

Always, always, always give students a specific purpose for reading

Break difficult reading into manageable parts

Make sure you have read your own textbook

When possible, use prompts and have students write about what they read
