Although I feel I cannot give a highly informed opinion, since I am not American nor did I live in the U.S. at the time Le Guin wrote The language of the night, I will do my best to give my point of view. I cannot help but think that this excerpt is beginning to feel outdated. Today we live in a world where we see all sorts of fantasy media, from books to video games, being extremely successful. Most of the highest grossing films are works of fantasy, as are some of the best-selling books. Fantasy books, aimed mainly at adults, are also being very well received, with titles such as A song of ice and fire selling millions upon millions. It is true, however, that most adults have still not been drawn into fantasy books. Like Le Guin said, their main concern is that of productivity and living in reality, which is not really a bad thing. Nevertheless, I think that as times goes on Americans, and people in general, will stop being afraid of dragons.
