The Jamie Richards-trained Avonallo,

whose breeder Sam Williams of Little Avondale Stud retained a share, has

caught the eye in two barrier trial victories last month.

“Hopefully he will be hard to beat, but you never know in these

early races as there could be another smart one there,” a cautious and

understated Rutten said yesterday.

“We haven’t competed against anything to get a line on them. He goes

all right, but he’s never been pressured. He’s been held back in his two

trials, but Jamie is very pleased with him.

“I have broken-in another couple by Belardo for other people and

they are really nice horses, too.”

Rutten’s exploits were

recognised by Waterhouse and

Bott, with the latter approaching

him to assist the Sydney trainers

in selecting yearlings.

He started that role at the

Inglis Classic Yearling Sale,

putting his name alongside colts

by Sebring (More Than Ready)

and Xtravagant (Pentire),

and had planned to be at the

Australian Easter Yearling Sale

prior to both countries being effectively locked down and the international

borders closed.

“I was looking forward to the sales there, but that didn’t happen.

Adrian said (Easter) was where they do most of their buying but Covid put

an end to that,” Rutten said.

“It just throws you out of kilter, the Covid, and it will until we get fully

operational again, but when that happens I’ll be looking forward to getting

back to Australia for the sales.

“That is what I’d like to get into now.

I’ve been breaking and pre-training and I’ve been buying and selling horses,

which have all been going well, but I’d like to do a bit more bloodstock work

rather than focusing so much on the land and being on the farm all the time.”

Rutten’s hands-on experience has assisted him in assessing the

respective merits of yearlings but he also spent years at Karaka honing his

skills, something he hopes to call on to a greater capacity.

“I enjoy looking at horses and being able to compare them all. I’ve

been going to the sales for a long time and just looking at horses,” he said.

“I haven’t really promoted myself. I’ve been quite busy on the farm and I

need to let that go to spend more time promoting myself and getting myself

out there to try and act as an agent. I will keep that up and try to make some

more contacts.”

Meanwhile, Rutten also

revealed yesterday that

Yourpoint was spelling at his

farm in the south of the North

Island after performing below

expectations in the Northland

Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)

and the El Roca Sir Colin Meads

Trophy (Listed, 1200m) two

weeks later.

The two runs in September came after Rutten had rejected significant

offers to buy the Bull Point (Fastnet Rock) gelding who he purchased for

NZ$100,000 at the 2019 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale.

“It’s been a little bit disappointing and we couldn’t really put a finger

on why he didn’t finish off,” he said.

“He copped a couple of bumps and maybe that saw him switch off.

He’s just having a little spell on my farm and then he’ll go back to Jamie.

“He showed a lot early and hopefully he'll be back in time for Ellerslie

(in January) as he’s only having a short break. He’s got a good turn of foot

when he gets going.”

I ENJOY LOOKING AT HORSES AND BEING ABLE TO COMPARE THEM ALL. I’VE BEEN GOING TO THE SALES FOR A LONG TIME AND JUST LOOKING AT HORSES- CHRIS RUTTEN

Mares out to break Epsom hoodoo

Probabeel (Savabeel) and Funstar (Adelaide)

enjoyed a tremendous rivalry as three-year-olds

and the pair will lock horns again tomorrow in

a bid to defy the historic male dominance of

the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). Only three

mares have triumphed in the Epsom over the

past four decades - Winx (Street Cry) in 2015,

Secret Admirer (Dubawi) in 2011 and La Neige

(Better Boy) in 1976 - yet Probabeel's trainer

Jamie Richards is unperturbed by the statistics.

"The statistics are there and records are made to

be broken. I wouldn't be too concerned about

that," Richards said. "Obviously we're not Winx

but we're going well. She has got genuine Sydney

autumn form which, in our opinion, is one of the

most competitive jurisdictions in the world. We

think we're in with a nice chance." Probabeel

and the Chris Waller-trained Funstar, who have

clashed six times and have three head-to-head

wins each, have been drawn alongside one

another tomorrow, with Probabeel in barrier 18

and Funstar to her outside. Last year the trainers

fought the race out on the line, with Waller’s

Kolding (Ocean Park) just edging out Te Akau

Shark (Rip Van Winkle) by a short head.

Rondinella set to peakJohn O’Shea believes his mare Rondinella (Ocean

Park) is set to peak perfectly for the Metropolitan

(Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick tomorrow. The six-

year-old finished fifth in the Kingston Town Stakes

(Gr 3, 2000m) on September 19 and clocked the

fastest last 200 metres of the race, which should

stand her in good stead for the weekend. “She’s

just improved again, she’s been set for this race

and I wouldn’t change her preparation,’’ O’Shea

told Racing NSW. “It’s been perfect and I hope

that reflects in her performance. Each run has

been better, her work has been much better in the

last fortnight and she will take good improvement

from her last run.” The last mare to win the race

was Coco Cobanna (Casual Lies) in 2000, but

O’Shea has a solid record in the race having

prepared Bedouin (Snaadee) to victory in 2003

and Magic Hurricane (Hurricane Run) 12 years

later.

Just Thinkin’ to run in Hill StakesJust Thinkin’ (So You Think) has been scratched

from the Epsom Handicap in favour of the Hill

Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Randwick on the same

card. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained

four-year-old won at Randwick two starts ago

before finishing runner-up to Rock (Pierro) in the

Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1500m) at Newcastle

on September 18. Just Thinkin’ won the Dulcify

Handicap (Listed, 1500m) at Rosehill in 2019.

Libertini puts Everest cards on tableLibertini (I Am Invincible) will showcase her

Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) credentials when taking

on star sprinters Nature Strip (Nicconi) and

Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) in the

Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick

tomorrow. The mare will clash with the leading

Everest fancies as trainer Anthony Cummings

looks to give her every opportunity to gain a

place in the $15 million race amid interest from

slot holders. If she fails to gain a start, she will

instead contest the Sydney Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)

on the Everest undercard. "She is easily forward

and well enough to go to the races and I expect

her to run up to her best," Cummings said. "She

will improve off that into the run in two weeks

time on Everest day. It could be in The Everest,

it might be the other race. I suppose that's a

matter for other people. The nature of her work

and the ease with which she runs puts her in

their [Nature Strip and Classique Legend] ball

park and then it's a matter of match fitness.”

‘He’s doing things he shouldn’t be doing’Nature Strip’s recent barrier troubles have left a big

question mark over him according to dual Everest

winner Peter Snowden. Nature Strip was ordered to

retrial before he could race after dislodging James

McDonald as the gates opened in a Randwick

trial on September 21. Fortunately, the six-year-

old came through it unscathed and successfully

completed his next trial at Rosehill a week later.

However, he did appear to leave the gates slowly

and Snowden thinks there is cause for concern. "I'd

be going the grey horse [Classique Legend] mainly

because if I was Chris [Waller], I would be a little

bit worried," Snowden told RSN927. "He [Nature

Strip] is doing things he shouldn't be doing. It

might have been a coincidence but to me, from

the outside looking in, I'd be getting a bit worried

because sprinters of that calibre don't do those

sort of things. You certainly don't want them doing

them just before a grand final. A big question mark

on him on Saturday and Classique Legend doesn't

make mistakes.”

Draw to help MugatooKris Lees is banking on Mugatoo's

(Henrythenavigator) good barrier draw in

seven to offset his hefty weight as the trainer

chases a second Metropolitan Handicap

victory after County Tyrone (Danewin)

carried 56.5 kilograms to success in 2004. It

was the biggest Metropolitan weight carried

to victory in the past 20 years and with 57

kilograms, Mugatoo will need to set a new

mark to win tomorrow. "It shows how big

a task it is going to be for him," Lees said.

"County Tyrone was already a Group 1 winner

and had run in a Sydney Cup when he won

the Metropolitan, and he only won by a head.

I am more comfortable with 57 and a good

draw than if he had less weight and a bad gate.”

The Newcastle Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) winner is

a dominant $2.70 favourite for Saturday's

staying feature. He holds nominations for

the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and the Caulfield

(Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cups (Gr 1,

3200m) and his Randwick performance will

determine which races he targets.

Kalashnikov has edge in BreedersPeter Snowden believes Kalashnikov

(Capitalist) can follow in the footsteps of his

sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon) by winning the

Breeders’ Plate (Group 3, 1000m) at Randwick.

Kalashnikov has so far shown similar talent to

Capitalist but also professionalism beyond his

years, having won his trial last week by five

lengths at Randwick. “He flew the start, he

switched off, he was on a loose rein in front

and didn’t over race at all,’’ Snowden told

Racing NSW. “Hughie (Bowman) asked him to

quicken and he put four on them in one stride.

The barrier (11) is not ideal but his attitude will

give him every chance. If he flies the start he

can zip across and if he jumps with them and

three or four punch up you know he will come

back and slot in somewhere.” The TAB market

has Kalashnikov a clear favourite at $2.60

and Snowden also has Astrologer (Star Turn)

($16) and Construct (I Am Invincible) ($6) in

tomorrow’s event, but Kalashnikov is just the

pick of the bunch. “There’s not much between

them but he probably trialled an edge better,”

Snowden said.

Newnham follows proven parth with MiravalleTrainer Mark Newnham compares Miravalle

(Redoute's Choice) with his Group 1 winner

Maid Of Heaven (Smart Missile) and hopes the

former can achieve a feat her stablemate could

not. Now retired, Maid Of Heaven finished

sixth in the 2018 Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)

before backing up seven days later to outshine

the colts and geldings in the Spring Champion

Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), and Miravalle is following

the same template by lining up in the Flight

Stakes at Randwick tomorrow. "She's got a

very similar form pattern to Maid Of Heaven,"

Newnham said. "Maid Of Heaven ran a similar

race in the Tea Rose and was quite unlucky in

the Flight and then went on to win the Spring

Champion. They are very similar. This filly has

probably got a touch more class if anything."

Tempo key to GilgaiTrainer Mike Moroney believes a strong pace

can enable Tofane (Ocean Park) to announce

herself as a genuine Everest contender in

tomorrow’s Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). Tofane

finished a first-up third in the Bobbie Lewis

Quality (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington last month

and Moroney thinks she has improved since

that run. "We had her pretty forward for her first

run but I think she's improved again," Moroney

told Racing.com. "She's got to be close to her

best because the next one is the big one. Santa

Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) meets her very well

at the weights and, to be fair, his best will take

a power of beating, so her best chance will be

if they run along truly. They just cantered and

sprinted late last start and that's what you're up

against when you race down the straight - she's

got good straight form but we're well aware that

at times, those races aren't really run to suit a

horse like her."

Firm track concern for Young RascalArchie Alexander is convinced former English

stayer Young Rascal (Intello) is ready to run a

big race but he is worried the six-year-old will

again face his nemesis of firm ground in the

Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2510m) at Flemington.

"I'm happy with him but he just needs to

get his toe into the ground," Alexander said.

"The way it's shaping on Saturday he's going

to have to run on a good three which doesn't

suit him. I feel it's going to be a bit firm for

him." Young Rascal is already assured of a

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) start, as he is

number 22 in the order of entry, and is 21st

in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) order,

but Alexander says he needs to show some

form to continue on that path. "He's got to be

competitive in a race like this to push on to

those sort of races," he said.

Parr on Trekking

Josh Parr has been booked to ride Trekking

(Street Cry) in this year’s Everest (1200m)

having ridden the gelding into third place in

last year’s race. Trekking was on Wednesday

confirmed as a runner in the $15 million race

alongside his Godolphin-owned stablemate

Bivouac (Exceed And Excel), with the former to

run in the Max Whitby slot.

Group 1 priority for AndersCiaron Maher has not ruled out The Everest

for sprinting three-year-old Anders (Not A

Single Doubt) but he yesterday reiterated the

priority is to chase a Group 1 with the colt

who was secured by Widden Stud last month.

Anders was pre-post favourite for the A J Moir

Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) last week but a spiked

temperature saw him miss the race. Instead,

trainer Maher suggested the Caulfield Sprint

(Gr 2, 1000m) on October 17 as a lead-up to

the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at

Flemington two weeks later. "The main focus

is winning a Group 1 with him," Maher told

Racing.com. "The Everest was an option, and

I suppose is still an option, but Group 1s are

the ultimate for a colt and that's where we are

putting our energies into."

Vandyke confident in Desert LordTwelve months after failing in the Epsom

Handicap, Desert Lord (High Chaparral) is

poised to continue his form resurgence at

Eagle Farm tomorrow. Desert Lord created a

huge impression when he won a class six race

in hollow fashion at Eagle Farm in August at

his first start for trainer David Vandyke. "He

got to them so quickly and it looked like he

was just getting warmed up when he hit the

lead," Vandyke said. "I was surprised how easily

he won." Desert Lord, who finished ninth in

last year's Epsom Handicap, has been kept

ticking over by Vandyke and finished second

in a Sunshine Coast barrier trial last week. "The

trial has brought him back up to the mark,"

Vandyke said. "I think the 1400 metres will suit,

obviously he handles the Eagle Farm track well

and although it's a step up in class I think he'll

be hard to beat."

Emerald Kingdom to turn around Heathcote’s fortunesRob Heathcote is hoping Emerald Kingdom

(Bryannbo's Gift) can help turn his week around

after his star sprinter Rothfire (Rothesay)

suffered a fractured sesamoid in the Golden

Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) last Saturday, ruling him

out of The Everest. Emerald Kingdom resumes

in the 1000-metre open handicap at Eagle Farm

after a failed Brisbane winter campaign. “He

had a shocking campaign in the winter and I’m

going into this race on Saturday not knowing

why,” Heathcote told Racing Queensland. “I’ll

get this race out of the way first and just hope

he comes back. He’s a much better horse than

what he showed in the winter but it’s a mystery

why he didn’t come up last campaign.”

Oliver handed keys to Just ZereneDamien Oliver will ride Just Zerene (Zoustar)

on her return in a Benchmark 70 handicap at

Moonee Valley tonight. The enigmatic mare

has been scratched at the barrier three times

in the past 12 months, the latest at Murray

Bridge in early August when she was a $1.30

favourite. Before that, Just Zerene ran well

when third in the Lightning Stakes (Listed,

1050m) at Morphettville in July and will have

some gear changes tonight, with the barrier

blanket, blindfold and stallion chain all coming

off. Trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy will be

hoping Oliver, who rides Just Zerene for the first

time, has the answers on the talented mare.

Exhibition gallop for Behemoth

David Jolly will gallop Everest contender

Behemoth (All Too Hard) between races at

Morphettville tomorrow instead of giving him

a barrier trial this morning. Behemoth will be

ridden by Kayla Crowther in the gallop ahead of

travelling to Sydney next week for the October 17

slot race. Owner Grand Syndicates has teamed up

with The Star to compete in The Everest.

Money Matters takes out Hannans HandicapThe Adam Durrant-trained Money Matters

(Canford Cliffs) landed the Hannans Handicap

(Listed, 1400m) in impressive style at Kalgoorlie

yesterday, defeating Pym's Royale (Husson)

by two and a half lengths with Yeah Dardy

(Demerit) close behind in third. The gelding

followed up a handicap victory at Belmont on

Saturday to record his fourth win in five races.

Inglis sale-bound Cable Bay colt wins jump outCable Bay’s (Invincible Spirit) colt by Cadenzia

(Zabeel), who is lot 194 in the upcoming Inglis

Ready 2 Race Sale on October 20, put in an eye-

catching display when comfortably winning a

jump out at Pakenham. Cable Bay, who was the

leading first season sire in Britain and Ireland

in 2019, will have his first two-year-olds in

Australia this year, and this colt never eyeballed

another of his five rivals after scooting away

following a steady break from the stalls.

Bridle Bloodstock lands BartleyTalented three-year-old colt Bartley (Written

Tycoon) will do his future racing in Hong Kong.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained sprinter,

who was runner-up in the Black Opal Stakes

(Gr 3, 1200m) and won at Warwick Farm on

September 2, has been purchased by Hong Kong-

based Bridle Bloodstock’s Ian Sham on behalf of a

client. Bartley, who had raced for the China Horse

Club-Newgate Farm syndicate, was runner-up

in last Saturday’s Exford Plate (Listed, 1400m) at

Flemington behind Crosshaven (Smart Missile).

The deal was brokered by Magic Millions and

the colt will be trained by Me Tsui. Bartley was a

$600,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

purchase by Newgate and China Horse Club from

the Arrowfield Stud draft.

Internationals set to touchdownA flight containing the high-quality

international contingent of stayers heading to

Australia for the spring is expected to land in

Melbourne on Friday night, with 29 horses set to

arrive at approximately 9.45pm (AEST) tonight.

The planeload, which comprises 16 horses who

will return to Europe and another 13 horses

who will stay in Australia, is headed by Aidan

O'Brien's powerful trio of Anthony Van Dyck

(Galileo), Santiago (Authorized) and Tiger

Moth (Galileo). Local trainer Tom Dabernig is

eagerly awaiting the flight's arrival as he will

take over the training of Port Guillaume (Le

Havre). Dabernig said Port Guillaume had done

well during quarantine at Newmarket and had

been under the care of Jane Chapple-Hyam. "It

will be interesting to see how he settles in. He

still has a nomination for the Caulfield Cup but

I'll see how he is progressing," Dabernig said.

Scorse discharged from hospitalYoung jockey Patrick Scorse was discharged

from hospital yesterday with soft tissue injuries

to his ankle after a barrier mishap at the

Canberra races on Wednesday. There were fears

Scorse, the son of the retired Group 1-winning

jockey and Sky Racing pundit John Scorse, had

suffered a broken ankle. He is expected to be

sidelined for at least four to six weeks.

Supera primed for Group 1Multiple Group 2-winning mare Supera

(Savabeel) is ready to take her chance in the

Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) tomorrow,

a race which trainers Ken and Bev Kelso won

with Xanadu (Elusive City) in 2013. However

it will be a tough ask for the mare, with seven

of the 14 runners having already scored at elite

level, including Melody Belle (Commands)

who is searching for a hat-trick of wins in the

race. “We will talk tactics before the race with

Rosie [Myers] and go through where the speed

will be coming from and where we should end

up, in conjunction with Gary Cossey as well,”

Ken Kelso said. “It is a race with a lot of depth.

I think it is one of the better Group 1 fields we

have seen in New Zealand for a while, but you

couldn’t label any one horse, they all have a

chance. It is a very strong field and draws and

the run in the race is going to be very important.

We have drawn out a little bit worse than we did

the other day and it is a tricky barrier [11] for

that mile. Starting on the corner is not easy.”

Wekaforce on Telegraph campaignThe Terri Rae-trained Wekaforce (Showcasing)

will begin a campaign towards the JR & N

Berkett Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) when she

steps out at Riccarton tomorrow. The five-year-

old mare resumes in the Rangiora New World

Open Handicap (1200m), her first start since

a close second to Enzo’s Lad (Testa Rossa)

in the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1200m)

at Trentham in March. Wekaforce will join

stablemate Windsor (Alamosa), also first-up,

in the feature sprint at Riccarton. “They are

both coming up nicely. They have both had two

trials. Windsor is carrying a fair bit of condition

this time in but they are both pretty forward

with the trials and both have drawn well,” Rae

said. “Barrier one is a really good draw for

Wekaforce because she jumps and runs. She

likes to get the wind in her teeth. She’s pretty

ready to go. Windsor might need more racing

before showing up.”

Guineas goals for Waimoku FallsWell-bred filly Waimoku Falls (Sacred Falls)

kicked off her racing career with a comfortable

win on debut at Tauranga on Wednesday over

1300 metres. Jockey Sam Spratt said Waimoku

Falls had a look around when she hit the front,

however when she eyeballed the main danger

Duby (Ocean Park) out wide, the filly knuckled

down again and had plenty more to give. “She

got out and as she went further, she did it easily,”

Spratt said. “I thought we were going to be in for

a bit of a dog fight but the further she went, she

lengthened stride. She’s got huge improvement

in her and she is a lovely filly.” The three-year-

old filly, who is out of Savabeel (Zabeel) mare

Honolulu, is likely to target the Soliloquy Stakes

(Gr 3, 1400m) on October 24 before a possible

tilt at the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m) at Riccarton in November.

riding in France. A urine sample given by the

champion jockey at Chantilly on July 19 was

found to contain metabolites of the drug. But

subsequent hair tests have found no trace of the

substance and he said on Twitter: "I have never

taken cocaine in my life and will fight to clear

UK: Launch of new team-based Racing League set for 2021A new team-based Racing League, created by

Championship Horse Racing, is set to launch

in the UK in 2021, offering £1.8m (AUD$3.23m)

in prize money across six fixtures running from

the end of July through until the beginning of

September. The initiative involves 12 teams,

with each squad made up of between two

to four trainers and three jockeys. The races,

over varying distances, will be 0-90 handicaps

and races will take place under ‘hands and

heels’ regulations with whips only carried

for corrective and safety purposes. There will

be other notable differences, with jockeys'

names emblazoned on the back of their silks,

reinforcing the team nature of the competition.

Commenting on the Racing League, a BHA

spokesman said: "At this moment in time the

injection of £1.8m from the Racing League

project is a welcome boost to the sport’s

finances and therefore, to aid the project’s

launch, we have taken the step to schedule the

six fixtures that comprise this series now.”

BY JAMES THOMAS & ALEX WILTSHIRE

Plenty will have been left wondering

if they were witnessing the new

normal at Doncaster on Wednesday

as the relocated Goffs Orby Sale

got off to a sobering start compared to the

giddy highs seen in recent years. However,

Brad Spricer of Melbourne based Spicer

Thoroughbreds had cause to cheer, taking

back to Australia a Camelot (Galileo) colt for

£160,000.

It almost goes without saying that a great

deal has changed, within the racing and

breeding world and far beyond, since day one

of last year's Orby Sale, when 11 lots fetched

€400,000 or more and three yearlings broke

into seven-figure territory at Kildare Paddocks.

Just two lots brought £400,000 or more on

Wednesday.

Tellingly, all but two of the buyers who

signed for those headline lots last year were

absent in South Yorkshire, with names such as

Godolphin, Shadwell and Westerberg missing

from the list of purchasers.

Year-on-year comparisons are not

straightforward given fluctuations in currency,

and given the sale is only at the halfway point

the trends in evidence on Wednesday remain

subject to change.

But the bare facts show that turnover

reached £11,504,000, having been €23,059,500

at the corresponding session in 2019 (a drop of

close to 45 per cent). The average was £69,720,

compared to €123,315 last year (down 38 per

cent), and the median was £50,000, against

€75,000 12 months ago (down 27 per cent).

However, a clearance rate of 81 per cent,

with 165 of 203 offered yearlings changing

hands, suggests vendors were prepared to meet

the demands of the current market.

Spicer, who bought Lot 124, the Camelot

colt out of Edwinstowe (Shamardal), in

conjunction with bloodstock agent Alex Elliott,

tweeted his delight at the purchase, who will be

trained by Lindsey Smith at Warrnambool.

He will be hoping that the colt follows in

the path of another, now notorious, Camelot

colt, purchased out of a British yearling Sale

and taken to Australia to race, in Saturday’s

Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) winner

Russian Camelot.

In what was a buyers’ market, Spicer

purchased the colt, whose grand dam is

German Champion three-year-old filly Lady

Marian (Nayef), for Australian clients, with the

horse heading to Australia in the next six weeks

where he’ll be broken in.

Another Australian in buying action at Goffs

was Scone trainer Sam Kavanagh, who teamed

up with Byron Rogers to secure lot 112, a son

of Ulysses (Galileo) out of the unraced Pivotal

(Polar Falcon) mare Diyavana for £80,000.

The top lot for Day 1 was lot 12, an Invincible

Spirit (Green Desert) colt out of Aimhirgin

Lass (Pivotal), who was knocked down to Ben

McElroy for £420,000.

Joao Moreira sealed a hat-trick of wins

containing plenty of promise for the

future as Computer Patch (Exceed And

Excel) blew away his rivals in the G3

National Day Cup Handicap (1000m) at Sha Tin

on Thursday, 1 October.

“This horse gave me a very good feeling

when I was aboard him last time for John Moore

and his win today did not come as a surprise to

me,” Moreira said.

“He’s given me that feeling all along that he

has ability and it was just a matter of time until

he grabbed a Group-race win, fortunately today

was the day and I couldn’t be more pleased.”

Moreira drove the Exceed And Excel

rig straight to the front, avoiding the early

collision that saw Gold Chest (War Front) edge

right and Big Party (Exceed And Excel) cross

left, squeezing Yee Cheong Baby (Sebring),

Victoriam (I Am Invincible) and Wishful

Thinker (I Am Invincible).

From there, Moreira hugged the rail and the

talented four-year-old raced away for an easy

two and three quarter-length victory, with Jolly

Banner (Lonhro) in second and Gold Chest

third, while Big Party weakened to fourth.

“I was quite surprised that no one else

ended up in front of me during the race as I was

able to just manage him throughout the first

half of the race,” Moreira said.

“He was able to stride out freely halfway

through and he quickened carrying the

lightweight on his back, and he was able to

produce what he’s got. I knew he was going to

win.”

Computer Patch’s victory was his first for

his new handler Tony Cruz and he did it at his

second start for the two-time champion trainer.

“First-up he wasn’t 100 percent fit, but

today he was really tuned-up and I expected

him to win today. There’s no choice, he will

have to go up to 1200 metres and I believe he

can do it,” Cruz said.

Moreira’s running treble kicked off earlier

on the card with the talented Hong Kong

Classic Mile prospect Sky Field (Deep Field),

and he followed that with a comfortable win

aboard Fox Cheunger (Hussonet) in the Class 5

Shenyang Handicap (1200m).

Cruz took a double when he sealed his

1300th Hong Kong win as a trainer two races

later: Circuit Hassler (Shocking) strode clear

in the Class 3 Tianjin Handicap (1400m) under

Matthew Chadwick.

Sky Field on the Classic trailSky Field boosted his Hong Kong Classic

Mile credentials with his second win of the term

in the Class 3 Shanghai Handicap (1200m).

The talented son of Deep Field was cuddled

throughout the race by Moreira to score with

plenty in hand – more than the official three

quarters of a length – rounding up his six rivals

from the rear of the field in some style.

But, while an exciting talent, the chestnut

does have a few kinks to iron out, notably his

mid-race manners and a sparky attitude, which

sees him over-race.

“He’s still learning as you can see – it could

have all gone wrong with his inexperience,”

trainer Caspar Fownes said.

“Hopefully he keeps learning because

he needs to start to settle down a bit more

in the middle of the race if he’s going to be

a top horse, but hopefully he does that with

experience.”

Sky Field gave the strong impression that a

step into Class 2 next time will be well within

his scope, as only once did Moreira need to lift

his whip.

“I’m not worried about Class 2 – he’ll

probably get six points for the win which will

take him to 86, which is a nice weight as he’ll go

up in class but down in weight,” said Fownes,

who leads the premiership with 11 wins, five

clear of his closest pursuer.

“When they slackened up the pace it

was very easy for him to get on the bit and he

wanted to be a little bit keen and over-race but

he came back to Joao in the end and he did his

job nicely,” Fownes said.

“Even though he’s only won by three parts

of a length it was a good effort – I’m very happy

with it. He’s just going to have to learn to be a

bit more tractable mid-race – he’s a horse with

a big engine but he just needs to learn to start

to chill, he’s a great horse for the future but

obviously for this season we have to see how

high we can take him – you never know,”

Three-time champion trainer Fownes has

tasted Four-Year-Old Classic Series success

previously, with Lucky Nine (Dubawi) who

secured the 2011 Hong Kong Classic Mile.

While Sky Field looks likely to tackle that

HK$12 million contest, Fownes is less certain

about going beyond that to the second and

third legs of the three-race series.

“I’m not going to gut bust a horse for the

sake of it,” he said. “With Lucky Nine, he was a

superstar: he won the Classic Mile, ran second

in the Classic Cup (1800m) and I could have

gone on to the Derby (2000m) and he would

have run in the first three but I backed off him

and said ‘no, he’s done his job’,” said Fownes,

who is now one short of his 900th Hong Kong

win.

Mighty treble for PurtonChampion jockey Zac Purton sealed a

treble with victory aboard Mighty Giant (Power)

in the Class 2 Beijing Handicap (1400m), the

galloper’s fourth win in succession.

“He’s a tough horse – he makes it hard for

himself, he just likes to bowl along and he’s

got one action but he loves to keep rolling and

continue on with the gallop. He can run good

sectionals and go on with it,” Purton said.

The Ricky Yiu-trained galloper hopped

straight on the speed and from there, managed

to hold his rivals at bay including the fast-

finishing Not Usual Talent (Zacinto).

“Zac (Purton) knows him really well, the big

plus is that he was first-up this season, it was a

good effort. What a horse!” Yiu said.

“He spent a good time in Conghua, about

three to four months, and the colour of the horse

went darker, some of the horses change colour,

that’s very obvious. He’s still progressing, he’s

still up-and-coming,” Yiu said of the 87-rater.

Purton kicked off his treble with victory

aboard debutante Everyone’s Delight (El Roca)

in section two of the Class 4 Chengdu Handicap

(1200m), before scoring aboard Angel Of My

Eyes (Niagara) in the Class 4 Jinan Handicap

(1400m).

Glory for LeungEarlier on the card, Derek Leung kicked off

a double on the Jimmy Ting-trained Pegasus

Glory (Wandjina) displayed a heap of potential

to win at his second Hong Kong start, taking

the opener, section one of the Class 4 Chengdu

Handicap (1200m).

The four-year-old by Wandjina placed

second on debut down the straight at the

season’s opening fixture and today at his first

attempt around a bend, returned victorious

under Derek Leung.

“Derek (Leung) came back and said in

the straight, when he came out he was just

thinking and he looked around, that he wasn’t

concentrating but then when other horses

came up to him, then he knew he needed to go,”

Ting said.

“It’s nice to get a winner, we supposed he’d

win maybe a bit easier than today: he travelled

good but he is still very green, when he got

a clear run he was still looking for the other

horses a bit. He needs time to mature but he’s a

nice horse,” Leung said.

Leung also captured the Class 4 Nanning

Handicap (1600m) with a make-all ride aboard

Light My Day (Dawn Approach) for trainer

Dennis Yip.

London Hall (He’s Remarkable) bagged the

Class 3 Chongqing Handicap (1800m), with

Alexis Badel rallying the David Hall-trained

galloper to his fifth Hong Kong win.

Hong Kong racing continues this Sunday (4

October) at Sha Tin.

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

Darling Diamond could be

the latest jewel in the Pierro

(Lonhro) crown for owner-

breeder Greg Kolivos, who saw

this daughter of the champion racehorse surge

clear for a powerful win on the Kensington

track at Randwick on Wednesday to break her

maiden status.

In a race possessing some regally bred

contenders, it was Darling Diamond, who is

out of Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)

winner Diamond Drille (Al Maher) and from

the family of I Am Invincible (Invincible

Spirit), who got the better of Yulong’s $400,000

yearling purchase So Far Away (Snitzel), who

is out of Listed winner Tara From The Cape

(Leroidesanimaux).

From barrier nine

of ten, Robbie Dolan

sent Darling Diamond

forward and, after some

encouragement, settled

outside the leader

Seleque (Deep

Field). After travelling

smoothly in the

middle stages, the

filly kicked clear at

the 300-metre mark

to win impressively

by two lengths, going

away from second

place So Far Away,

with Hot Spring Cold

(Written Tycoon) in

third.

Kolivos, who

owned and raced Pierro in his blue and red

lightning bolt colours, bred and sold multiple

Group 1 winner Shadow Hero (Pierro) to Mark

Newnham for $260,000 out of the 2016 Inglis

Classic Yearling Sale and the pair teamed up on

this occasion to keep the filly under Kolivos’s

Lightning Thoroughbreds banner.

Darling Diamond was having her third

start, having finished third at Gosford over 1200

metres and fourth last time out at Newcastle

over 1400 metres where she showed signs of

her untapped ability, but the three-year-old

came of age here, with the filly looking suited to

a further step up in trip.

For Newnham, he has eyes on much higher

targets for the talented filly as he looks for her

to sparkle on Everest Day in the Reginald Allen

Stakes (Listed, 1400m).

“It was pleasing to get a win with her for the

Kolivos family,” the trainer said. “She is a lovely

well-bred filly who has kept improving the

whole prep and will give her a little chance in

the Reginald Allen in a couple of weeks.

“She showed versatility today, she got on

pace and relaxed well so for her to go on and

win by two lengths is the start of a promising

career. I think she will keep getting better

and the autumn will be more her time, but a

little Listed win before that would be much

appreciated,” he said.

Darling Diamond is the first to race of two

foals of racing age for Diamond Drille, who

also won at Group 3 level and was placed in

the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) during

her on-track career. She has a two-year-old

colt by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit)

named Diamond Drummer, who is in the

hands of the same connections having passed

in for $110,000 at this year’s Inglis Easter

Yearling Sale, while she has a filly foal by

Pierro (Lonhro) born last year. She was not

served in 2019.

BY STEVE MORAN | @STEVEM_MORAN

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s

Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking

despite being last and a long way off the leader

Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer

Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart

sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow

margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

right grade I can keep him progressing along.

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

stage. And I think if we come back this time

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his

claim for a potential shot at The

Everest (1200m) when silencing

his doubters with an impressive

victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

The Valley last night.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding

harboured plenty of criticism after his last

start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)

when he failed to settle on the front end.

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

1 horse with an impressive win in the $1

million sprint.

Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip

began well from the inside barrier and was able

to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.

The track record holder over the course

and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes

(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly

around the turn and was able to hold off a

gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a

short neck. Continued on page 2>>

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

1 winner here.

"That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

good race.

"You think punters get

frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

later.

"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

of $1,879,285.

Analysis: The favourite Money Matters, took his consistent record to

nine wins from 15 starts in recording his third stakes success here. After

a smart beginning he soon went to the front and then travelled along

nicely at quite a good tempo. He dashed clear on straightening and

was not threatened from that point to score comfortably. Pym’s Royale

settled in seventh place on the rails, improved behind runners at the

turn, gained a split on the rails halfway down the straight and then came

with a late run for second. Yeah Dardy was a handy third on the rails,

went to second on turning for home and then battled well for third,

narrowly missing second nearing the post with Moschard finishing well

from the tail of the field to grab fourth. [KB]
