RESPECT, TEAMWORK, INCLUSIVENESS, RESILIENCE, PERSISTENCE 1 Cook’s Log Issue No 10– 27th June Principal’s Report I want to start our final newsletter for Term Two 2019, by highlighting the caring and supportive community that we are, here at James Cook Primary School. Many of you will be aware of the accident that occurred last Wednesday at the Amalfi Drive roundabout. What a wonderful team effort was shown by a group of concerned parents who sprang into action, to assist the injured mother and child. A special thanks especially to the parent who drove them to the Dandenong Hospital. The family are most grateful to everyone who assisted. Our SRC have finally seen some of their efforts come to fruition. Much of their fundraising, over the past two years, has been aiming towards the installation of some new outdoor furniture. This was realised at the beginning of last week to add some colour and comfort to our outside spaces. Thanks to everyone for your support of our Student Representative Council. The winners of our House Competition for Term Two was Correa. The mystery reward for the members of Correa was a trip to the movies to see, ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’. The recipients of the Principal’s Treat this term also tagged along with them. I have been visited by a number of students, proudly showing off the results of their creativity and hard work in the art room with Mrs Tidey. Maddison, Van, Ivona and Isodora finished beautiful needle-work pictures. Aleisha and Gunnu are equally as proud of their personalised clay tiles. When we return in Term Three we swing into ‘musical mode’. The script, ‘Once Upon a Where…?’ was a collaboration between some of our Year Six students, Mr McPherson and Mr Wende. Auditions have been happening with Mr McPherson, with speaking parts being allocated at the beginning of Term Three. Save the date – Wednesday 11 th September 2019. Mrs Patmore will be returning from leave next term. Mrs Schwarz will be on leave for all of Term Three. A number of staff will be stepping in to cover her role in her absence – Mrs Eddy, Mrs Tidey, Mrs Knight and Mr Clement. Mrs Hutchinson will be stepping back in to the full time role as teacher of 2A, due to Mrs Eddy’s additional duties and impending leave in Term Four. Mrs Hutchinson will also be on leave for the first four weeks of the term. Cheryl Pollock will be a welcome return to cover her leave. A replacement teacher will taking on the Physical Education role. Cook’s Log Issue No 10– 27th June Principal’s Report I want to start our final newsletter for Term Two 2019, by highlighting the caring and supportive

community that we are, here at James Cook Primary School. Many of you will be aware of the accident

that occurred last Wednesday at the Amalfi Drive roundabout. What a wonderful team effort was shown

by a group of concerned parents who sprang into action, to assist the injured mother and child. A special

thanks especially to the parent who drove them to the Dandenong Hospital. The family are most grateful

to everyone who assisted.

Our SRC have finally seen some of their efforts come to fruition.

Much of their fundraising, over the past two years, has been aiming

towards the installation of some new outdoor furniture. This was

realised at the beginning of last week to add some colour and

comfort to our outside spaces. Thanks to everyone for your support

of our Student Representative Council.

The winners of our House Competition for Term Two was Correa.

The mystery reward for the members of Correa was a trip to the

movies to see, ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’. The recipients of the

Principal’s Treat this term also tagged along with them.

I have been visited by a number of students, proudly showing off the results of their creativity and hard

work in the art room with Mrs Tidey. Maddison, Van, Ivona and Isodora finished beautiful needle-work

pictures. Aleisha and Gunnu are equally as proud of their personalised clay tiles.

When we return in Term Three we swing into ‘musical mode’. The script, ‘Once Upon a Where…?’ was a

collaboration between some of our Year Six students, Mr McPherson and Mr Wende. Auditions have

been happening with Mr McPherson, with speaking parts being allocated at the beginning of Term Three.

Save the date – Wednesday 11th September 2019.

Mrs Patmore will be returning from leave next term. Mrs Schwarz will be on leave for all of Term Three.

A number of staff will be stepping in to cover her role in her absence – Mrs Eddy, Mrs Tidey, Mrs Knight

and Mr Clement. Mrs Hutchinson will be stepping back in to the full time role as teacher of 2A, due to

Mrs Eddy’s additional duties and impending leave in Term Four. Mrs Hutchinson will also be on leave for

the first four weeks of the term. Cheryl Pollock will be a welcome return to cover her leave.

A replacement teacher will taking on the Physical Education role.

In Module Four this term, students have been busy learning about natural disasters as part of our Inquiry

topic. They have been researching, discussing and explaining the effects of natural disasters on many

people’s lives and the environment.

In Term 2, we’ve been studying natural disasters in our inquiry learning. We have been learning about how natural disasters occur and what causes them to happen. Also, we learnt about the damage they cause to the environment and us humans.

As part of our project, we made a shelter, explaining how we can prepare for a natural disaster.

Hiba and Briana

This term, we have been learning about natural disasters and how they occur, the damage that it causes and what causes them to happen.

We have learnt that disasters can lead to different stages of destruction and each one of them can happen anytime and anywhere.

We have been working on a project on the natural disaster, flood. We made a 3D model shelter, explaining how we can prepare for a flood.

Ann and Ghaniya

I enjoyed the actual findings of past and present events of volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes and floods that have occurred, and how they happened. I have also learnt about how deadly they can be and how much damage they can cause. The State Emergency Service (SES) visited us and taught us about natural disasters across the state and how they help. Austen

This term I have enjoyed making dioramas and researching natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis and many more. We also had an incursion where these awesome guys from the SES showed us the dangerous things that can end up in flood water and the reasons why we should never play in flood water.

Uros

We have been learning about natural disasters and how they occur. There are so many different kinds of natural disasters and each one has different impact on the environment and people. We learnt where each natural disaster most likely to occur around the world and ones that had massive effect to the place, like the 2004 tsunami, where it effected different countries, causing lot of damage to the environment and the people. Also, we learnt some natural disasters can be dangerous and some are just minor.

We have been working on a project about a certain natural disaster and making shelter to prepare for it.

Envision On Monday 17th June, Sean Teer from Envision visited our school to

collect the bottle caps we had been collecting all year. Sean showed us

some of the prosthetic arms and hands that he and his organisation had

created with recycled plastic bottle caps. These prosthetic limbs get sent

to children in need, all over the world.

Together we collected 2685 bottle caps. Well done to James Cook

students, staff and wider community. Let’s keep collecting for another

huge donation at the end of the year.

What’s Been Happening? We have been very musical! We danced to Just Dance with our favourite songs and tried karaoke! We had a go at baking our very own homemade banana bread from scratch! We used wholemeal flour and cut banana up nice and thin, and added all the ingredients and baked it in our little oven! Let it cool and enjoyed our baking. Yummy.

Year 6 captains holding some prosthetic limbs made from recycled bottle caps. Students from 5A with the 2685 caps we collected across the school.
