PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Year 6 Farewell Congratulations to our year 6 students who graduated at their farewell on Thursday night. We are immensely proud of the students for their exemplary behaviour, commitment to their school and for being respectful role models. We wish them every success in high school and for the years ahead.

Day 1 2020 Students from years 1-6 return to school on Wednesday 29 January. At the morning bell students will line up in their 2019 class lines where they will be met (generally) by their 2019 teacher and taken to class. Once student attendance is checked, we hope to form classes later in the day. In the afternoon Year 1 & 2 students will be dismissed from the infant’s playground. Kindergarten 2020 students will be commencing on Tuesday 4 February after completing their Best Start assessments.

Best Start Letters informing parents of the dates and times for the Best Start assessments (29 January, 30 January or 31 January) will be posted home next week. If you do not receive a letter, please contact the school on the 28th January 2020. We look forward to welcoming your child to Drummoyne Public School.

School Swimming Carnival Our annual swimming carnival will be held at Drummoyne Swim Centre on Monday 17 February. All year 3-6 students will be attending. Notes will be handed out when school recommences. Interested students may consider some additional swimming during the holidays to prepare.

New Classrooms On Monday, a number of classes will relocate to new classrooms to enable the movement of student furniture in preparation for 2020 classes. Students will remain in these classrooms for the last few days of term. This may

mean that your child will be dismissed from another classroom next week.

Student Reports Our Semester 2 student reports will go home next week. In response to parent feedback, the reports will include personalised teacher comments on student progress in English, mathematics and a general comment addressing the social and emotional development of students.

Some important aspects of the reports for families to remember are:

‘Sound’ is the expected achievement level that most students should achieve in all learning areas.

The reports are a point in time report. This means that we only report on what has been taught and assessed over Terms 3 and Term 4 (weeks 1-8). Therefore, it is possible that your child has performed differently during this reporting period and may receive a different level to the Semester 1 report.

Information about the number of achievements levels (Limited to Outstanding) allocated across a grade is available on request from the school. As you know, we have high expectations of the students.

While we do not schedule parent-teacher interviews in term 4 for all families, if you have any concerns about your child’s report, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher to discuss any issues.

Please contact the school next week if your child does not receive their report.

Quick Links for Parents The Department of Education has an A-Z index which provides a list of common topics of inquiry. You can access it through the following link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/practical-help-for-parents-and-carers/quick-guide-for-parents

Triple Zero Kids Challenge Kids can learn about getting help by playing games and solving mysteries by playing the Triple Zero Kids Challenge. They'll learn about safety messages and hear what happens when you call Triple Zero. http://kids.triplezero.gov.au/ Thank you to all parents and friends for your faithful support of the school throughout 2019. With best wishes for the year ahead. Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL

This week Year 6 concluded their 4 day High School week program. During this time students were grouped into 4 classes across the grade. Students were introduced to a timetable which reflected high school lessons and they were required to carry their bag throughout the day and independently arrive at their lessons on time. Some 18 teachers supported the teaching program including a science and a PE teacher from Sydney Secondary College Balmain campus. Students were taught engineering, English, Technology, mathematics, Italian, Indonesian, science, visual arts, food technology and drama. This program was designed to replicate high school and provide students with exposure to subjects they will encounter next year. Some student responses include: Eden - High school week was an enjoyable experience to help me prepare for next year Saskia - High school week was great! It gave me an idea of what I'd be doing at high school Zacharie - I thought it was fun and it boosted my expectations for high school next year Isabelle - It was fun to change classes. We learnt a lot. I thought algebra would be really boring but it was one of my favourite subjects.

YEAR 6 GRADUATION

Last night 79 Year 6 students were presented with their graduation certificates. It was a special night for the students where they enjoyed dancing, reminiscing and partying together at The Canada Bay Club, Five Dock. Thank you to Annie Beanland who was supported by parents, Kirsty Bush and Donna Valantis, and decorated the venue beautifully to make the evening memorable for our students. Thank you to each parent for your partnership this year. We know our students thrive when home and school are working as one and we thank you sincerely for your support. Please join us at 2:35pm next Wednesday when we will farewell Year 6 at our final assembly.

STAGE 2 PRESENTATION DAY

ENRICHMENT @ DPS

Literacy Enrichment As part of the Stage 1 Literacy Enrichment group, activities for the text ‘A chair for my mother’ by Vera Williams, we designed a comfortable chair to sit in after a long, hard day’s work.

The Jolly Postman

Enrichment students from classes 3F, 3A, 3O and 3W wrote their own class book based on the original book called The Jolly Postman by Janet and Alan Ahlberg. The students innovated on the original text and wrote individual letters to a fairy tale character.

In this process they thought about the text and discussed as a group how they could extend the ideas. Their writing of both the narration and their individual letters demonstrates their ability to create texts that are interesting, engaging and humorous.

Their new books are called the The Jolly Postman Rises Again (3F), Jolly Postman Goes Sailing (3W), The Jolly Postman Returns (3O) and the Comeback of the Jolly Postman (3A). These books were shared with classes at school.

TEACHER V STUDENT NETBALL MATCH

On Wednesday a netball game for the ages was played featuring The Mermaid Pearlers against the Teachers. At quarter time the teachers were down and the Mermaid Pearlers were winning by 7, however when Wonder Woman (Mr Sutton) came to the court he did his job. As a shooter he carried the team to a 9-7 victory, saving the day. But to be honest, if it was left the rest of the team, the ball would never come down to him and it could have been a smashing win for the Mermaid

Pearlers! All in all, it was a glorious day and the teachers fought hard for a well-deserved win. Isobel McLachlan

SRC FUNDRAISING MUFTI DAY

Mufti Day - Fundraising for Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). It was so good to see everyone dressed in mufti on Friday the 6th of December in support of RDA Ryde. RDA stands for Riding for the Disabled Association which means kids with disabilities participate in therapeutic horse riding programs. I am pleased to report that Drummoyne Public School raised a total of $1052.20 to help this worthwhile charity. The drought has affected RDA Ryde significantly with the cost of horse feed rising over 100%. Our donation couldn’t have come at a better time! RDA Ryde volunteer, Warren Smith, emailed my sister Ava and I to say the organisation was “thrilled” with DPS’s donation. “On behalf of everyone at RDA Ryde - a huge thank you! You have made a massive difference too many volunteers, riders and our horses”. Edie Kann

UNIFORM SHOP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The uniform shop still needs a few more volunteers to join our small and friendly group. For a tiny commitment (just 50 minutes a fortnight), we promise big rewards (proud

smiles from your kids and a time to catch up with other parents). We’re looking for people most days of the week, so if there’s a day that suits you best, let us know and we’ll pair you up with someone. Or, better yet, pair up with a friend and volunteer as a duo! Shifts run fortnightly from 8:50 to 9:40am, with the shop open 9:00 to 9:30am. During busy times (start of the year and changeover from summer to winter uniforms) shifts may run a little longer. If you’d like to put your hand up or have any questions, please contact Justine Foster at: mailto:[email protected]

Reports can mean anxious times for children. Will my parents be disappointed or proud? This is the main concern of most children.

Could try harder . . . always does her best . . . lacks concentration . . . easily distracted . . . a pleasure to teach . . .

Do these comments, taken from a batch of student reports sound familiar? Student reports bring mixed feelings for parents. Pleasure and pride if they are performing well but considerable angst when children are not progressing as you hoped.

Reports can mean anxious times for children too. Will my parents be disappointed or proud? This is the main concern of most children. Kids of all ages take their cues from their parents, so your reaction to their school report can affect the way they see themselves as learners and as people.

Before you rip open the sealed envelope containing the report do a little self-check to see if you are in the right frame of mind:

1. Are your expectations for your son or daughter realistic and in line with their ability?

Expectations are tricky. If they are too high then kids can be turned off learning. Too low and there is nothing to strive for. Pitch your expectations in line with your child’s abilities. A quick check of your child’s last report cards may provide you with a good yardstick.

2. Do you believe that children learn at different rates?

There are slow bloomers, late developers and steady-as-you-go kids in every classroom, so avoid comparing your child to siblings, your friends’ children and even yourself when you were a child. Instead look for individual progress.

3. Are you willing to safeguard your child’s self-esteem rather than deflate it?

Self-confidence is a pre-requisite for learning, so be prepared to be as positive and encouraging as possible.

School reports come in different formats. Some are prescriptive while some use grading systems such as A, B, C, etc. with room for teacher comments. Regardless of the format school reports should provide you with an idea of your child’s progress in all subject areas, their attitude and social development.

EDUCATION/LEARNING

Page 15: Respect Responsibility Resilience...9 April 2.35pm Easter Hat Parade 20 May Zone Cross Country Carnival 23 June Group Photo Day 24 – 26 June Year 6 Canberra Excursion receive a letter,

Here are some ideas to consider when you open your child’s report:

Focus on strengths. Do you look for strengths or weaknesses first? The challenge is to focus on strengths even if they are not in the traditional 3Rs or core subjects.

Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning. If the report indicates that effort is below standard, then you have something to work on. If your child is putting in the required effort, then you cannot ask any more than that, regardless of the grading.

Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a picture of your child’s progress as a member of a social setting. How your child gets along with his or her peers will influence his happiness and well-being, as well as give an indicator to his future. The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued by employers so don’t dismiss these as unimportant.

Take note of student self- assessment. Kids are generally very honest and will give a realistic assessment of their progress. They are generally very perceptive so take note of their opinions.

Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about strengths first before looking at areas that need improvement. Ask for their opinion about how they performed and discuss their concerns.

After reports are read and discussed celebrate your child’s efforts with a special activity or treat. In this way you will recognise progress and remind them that the holidays are just around the corner when they can forget about assessment, tests and reports for a while.

This program provides the opportunity for students to learn a new language as well as develop cultural awareness. Greek and Italian are taught through a variety of engaging strategies involving:

• conversation • plays • games • written tasks

• songs and dances • online activities • myths and legends • school incursions and excursions

Current educational thinking is that exposure to a different language at an early age enhances reading and listening skills regardless of the language learned. Young children seem to find it easy to speak, read and write a language different to English. For next year, we will place students in classes to learn one of the languages offered. It is expected that children who are native speakers of Italian or Greek, or those who have a family background in either of the languages will be placed in that language. Background in a language means that parents and/or grandparents speak the language. If your child has a sibling in the school already enrolled in a language, it is expected they will be placed in the same language. While every endeavour will be made to place your child in the language of your choice, it may be necessary to go to the second choice if the group size in one language becomes full. It is expected that there will be equal numbers in each language. To ensure your child can take a place in the Community Language program, please complete the form below and return it to the office by Wednesday 12 December. Your child will be notified of their language placement in Week 2 of next year.
