Music: Count Us in 2020 This Thursday, 7th November the whole school will assemble in the hall to sing ‘We Are’ with students across Australia as part of Music: Count Us In 2020. The Senior and Junior Choirs and Performance Band will lead the school guided by Miss Virginia Esparraga and Miss Penny Coucill. Parents are welcome – standing room only – from 12:15pm. The song the students will perform is written by students for students. The Count Us In Program culminates in the National Celebration Day when more than half a million students sing the same song, on the same day, at the same time – the annual Program Song. The event will involve over 745,000 students from more than 3,400 schools all around Australia celebrating the value of music education.

K—6 Pedlars' Parade & Kenya Aid Fundraiser Combined Thursday 14th November Our Pedlars’ Parade is a Manly West tradition where Year 6 students use their entrepreneurial skills to set up stalls and activities for K-5 students to enjoy. Year 6 students also raise funds for a farewell gift to the school and a selected charity. The SRC has nominated Kenya Aid as their charity and request that students bring a gold coin to help improve the availability and quality of health care and education in a school in Western Kenya. Students in K-5 may wear mufti in the colours of the Kenyan flag, (black, red and green). The Pedlar’s Parade will run from 11:40am until 1:10pm on Thursday 14th November.

Year 6 students will set up stalls under covered areas selling items such as ice creams and assorted treats. Students can participate in a variety of activities.

Activities and items will cost from 50c to $2.00. All classes will be escorted around stalls and will be given the opportunity to spend some money.

We encourage students to bring coins in a clearly labelled wallet, purse or zip lock bag for security and to assist in the management of stalls.

As we cannot guarantee content of food items, students with allergies are encouraged to bring their own treats from home for that day.

Students will still need to wear a hat and sunscreen and suitable clothing that protects from the sun ie a top or t-shirt with sleeves and suitable footwear such as joggers. Student Wellbeing - Helping Your Child Experience Success

Key Messages to communicate to your child about being successful

Remember to try hard and work hard Trying hard and working hard make it more likely that you will succeed at what you are trying to do. Have a go and believe in yourself Even if something is hard to do and you wonder if you will be able to do it, believe in yourself, take the risk and ‘have a go’. You can’t be successful if you don’t try. You won’t always succeed but at least you can say you have given it your best shot. Try to be well organised It’s important to be well organised if you want to achieve your goals. Find good ways to remember the things you have to do, to find the things you need, and to be on time. Intention to apply for Year 7 entry to a selective high school in 2021 – Application Close Monday 11th November Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held 12th March 2020. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2021, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online are available online at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 Applications close on Monday 11th November 2019. You must apply before the closing date. Miss Catherine Wyles Relieving Deputy Principal

The PBEL for this week is: Sun Safety

Kitchen Gardens News In the Kitchen Garden this week...

Year 4 are learning about hydrophobic/philic properties of materials by seeing if they leak, soak or repel water. Year 1 had their lesson on growing plants yesterday. They learnt all about what plants require to grow and how their needs vary. They also planted sunflower seeds which they will germinate at school and take home at the end of the term. Year 2 are coming to the garden in Week 6 for a lesson for their "Water Works" Science Unit. Kindy are planting in the K-2 Literacy & Numeracy Area in Weeks 7 & 8. Thrive the Kitchen Garden Cookbook Christmas solved! Thrive makes an excellent Christmas present for friends and family. We will be selling the Kitchen Garden cookbook at a Xmas Special price of $30. Cash sales under the big tree on Friday 22nd & 29th November. You will be able to purchase via Flexischools for the discounted price too. Limited stock available so get in quick. Whole school Working Bee - last weekend

A fantastic and enthusiastic group of parents and students turned up to help cut back and clear out the gardens next to the Year 6 classrooms and weed, reposition compost bins and collect rubbish from all around the school. Thank you so much to everyone who turned up. All help was greatly appreciated. It was an amazing effort by all involved, but a special thank you to Jo Holley and Margaret Pratt who oversaw the work in the Year 6 garden area.

The Manly West War on Waste continues... The focus for Term 4 is on Nude Food! Please help us reduce our waste going to landfill by the choices you make with the food and drinks you send to school with your children. Composting and Worm Farming Workshops @ Ecohouse at Kimbriki If you're concerned about climate change, learn how to compost and worm farm at one of these Ecohouse workshops on Sat 16th Nov. The cost is $30 and you get a voucher for a free worm farm or compost (one per household). Food waste that goes to landfill breaks down anaerobically producing methane and carbon dioxide, and both are potent greenhouse gases. School Compost Bins I have recently replaced the signs on the school compost bins to clarify what we do and don't accept. Please respect the "do not add anything" signs on the red cross (closed) bins and look for green tick (open) bin. Any questions email me. We always need help to turn the compost bins and water the Kitchen Garden, especially as we move towards Summer. Go to Signupgenius.com search under my email address, [email protected] for "Manly West Kitchen Garden" and sign yourself up for a day that suits. If you haven't done this before, email me and we can arrange a garden orientation. If you are bringing kitchen scraps from home to add to the school compost bins, you must be signed up at least once per term. Please do not put ANY bags in the bins, even if they say they are compostable or biodegradable Thanks, Angie Penn and Beth Dowdle

Library News

Meet our wonderful Wednesday Library Monitors, Evie, Halle and Sarah! These girls enjoy helping and being with the younger children each week. They love working in the library environment except when it gets too noisy! They take their jobs seriously but also have fun by likening themselves to flight attendants at Manly West Airlines! Scanning returns is fun and relaxing for them, plus it gives them a chance to see all the different types of books Manly West students like to borrow. They have suggested David Walliams and Phillip Pullman titles because they are interesting and exciting, as well as picture books and craft books.

Thank you so much for the top notch book covering, Kate Mooney and Sarah Petrie. There is nothing like a newly covered book to read! Our Manly West readers really appreciate your expertise.

If you are planning on ordering anything from the Scholastic Book Club catalogue, please do so by this Friday, November 8

th, 2019. Remember to tick the GIFT ORDER box when using LOOP if you want

them put aside for pick up. If you are paying by cheque, please mark it clearly as a gift order so we can keep it as a surprise! You can expect orders to start coming in Week 6. Thank you for giving the gift of literacy, creativity, knowledge and imagination to our library with the commission from your purchases.

It is difficult to photograph the brilliant new mural that artist Meg Minkley has created. Please come see for yourselves, and I guarantee you will find lots of amazing stories and connections to your world surrounding you in the corridor between Cyber City and the MWPS Library. We thank you for respecting the artwork by not touching or leaning on it, as well as placing your schoolbags and instruments away from the wall. That way the mural can be enjoyed by many future generations of the Manly West community.

Happy reading!

Mrs Ellen Swick Teacher Librarian

Manly West Before & After School Care (BASC)

INCURSIONS!!

K-1 & 2.0 - Last Tuesday we were lucky enough to be visited by some local heroes: The

Manly Fire Brigade. The children learnt all about fire safety, especially how to recognise unsafe fires and what to

do in an emergency. The children were lucky enough to look through a real thermal imaging camera and climb

through the cabin of the fire truck. It was wonderful to see the children engage with such important members of

our local community. The firefighters were impressed with how knowledgeable the children are, and they hope

that some of the children will become firemen and firewomen in the future!

3/4 - The children were very engaged in our dancing incursion. It was very inclusive of many children who are

known to be quite shy when it comes to group activities. The children were very connected with their world of

music and many children were showcasing their dance moves they have learned outside of school. The children

also experienced a sense of belonging to their peers as judgement was set aside. Overall the children were com-

municating both verbally and non-verbally with others. The incursion was a great success and was good to see a

member of our BASC team running the day.

5/6 - Last Friday the children enjoyed a great incursion called the Hunger Games run by Sam with Fit Kids. The

incursion entailed the children practising their archery skills at the targets before breaking into the Last Person

Standing game of Hunger Games. The children absolutely loved the competitive nature of the game as well as

the problem solving inherent in trying to win for their team.

Meet our Educators

“Hi, I’m Alyssa! I’ve been working at BASC for 6 months now! You’ll find me in the Year

2 room where I enjoy interacting and being hands on with the children’s learning and

creativity. One of the things I like most about the atmosphere at BASC is the positive

relationships we have with the children and families. “

…. Within our BASC staff we have 14 out of 43 staff

who are family members
