Respect & Care Responsibility Inclusion, Tolerance & Understanding Excellence Dear parents, grandparents and friends, Assembly At assembly today, students in grade 1 and 2 shared their recent writing. They have been learning to distinguish between fact and opinion, and writing information reports. Eve, Ava, Toby and Aara shared their factual writing about their chosen animals. We teach a variety of text types from Foundation to grade 6, including both fiction and non-fiction. Our students are explicitly taught how to generate ideas, plan, draft, revise, edit and pub- lish their writing. Its wonderful to hear the students relating what they have learned about being authors! At assembly we also farewelled Shane Hoffman, who has been a principal internat our school for the last six weeks. While Shane has learned a great deal about the principal and assistant principal roles, we also benefited enormously from his expertise, particularly in the area of teaching Numeracy. Best wishes to Shane in his future career! NAPLAN reports Individual NAPLAN reports for students in grades 3 and 5 were sent home today. These reports show your childs achievement in the NAPLAN assess- ments that were completed in May. The report includes Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy. Sunsmart It has been fantastic to see our students wearing their hats this week, and wonderful to see some sun too! As a Sunsmart school, we are proud of our commitment to ensuring that Sunsmart practices are implemented at our school. Thanks for supporting the school in this matter! ICAS Competitions The first ICAS competition for 2019 was completed yesterday, with thirteen students in grades 3-6 completing the ICAS Science assessment. Assembly

At assembly today, students in grade 1 and 2 shared their recent writing. They have been

assistant principal roles, we also benefited enormously from his expertise, particularly in

the area of teaching Numeracy. Best wishes to Shane in his future career!

Today Rohan, Tiger and Xander were presented with a Silver

certificate at assembly.

Congratulations Xander and Tiger your first certificates!

Congratulations Rohan on your second certificate!

Certificates are granted when a student earns 1000 points or more within one week. Students initially earn a Bronze Certificate, then a Sil-

ver Certificate once five Bronzes have been earned. With four Silver Certificates, a student then receives the much-coveted Gold Certificate,

demonstrating their long-term commitment and developing ability.

SCHOOL DISCO

Junior School Council will be running a disco on the 13th of September. It

will run during lunch time for students who are in prep to grade 2 and after school from 5 o’clock to 6 o’clock for students in grade 3 to 6. There will be fantastic music, lights, a glow stick when you arrive and an icy pole as you leave. It will be a gold coin donation and all money raised will go to Dana Street’s world vision child. Please bring your money in before the

disco so Junior School Council can make sure everyone has an icy pole and a glow sticks. Hope to see you there, thank you.

Students from grades 3-6 MUST have a permission note to attend the after school disco at 5pm. Spare permission notes are available at the office.

Term 4 School Council fundraiser- save the date!

Our major Bunnings Barbecue fundraiser is coming up on 26th October at the

Creswick Road store. A roster is available for sign-up at our office. We will need a

large number of parents/ grandparents for two hour shifts throughout the day.

This Term in PE, we have been learning Dance and Gymnastics.

Students have learned how to respond to music in different ways, move to

the tempo and perform actions to the beat. Students have also learned a

range of dances, including dances from other cultures. They co-created a

class or group dance and performed for their class.

For the second half of this term, students have been learning various gym-

nastics movements. They have learnt various shapes including rocket, butterfly, angry cat, front support. Students have been

learning various other inversion skills including forward rolls, backward rolls, Spiderman handstands, cartwheels. They have

also had the opportunity to use hoops, ribbons, balls, bean bags, scarves in creative ways.

I would also like to thank everyone for their support with our swimming program this term. It was short notice but everyone pulled together to fit it in. A special thank you to our staff,

our parent helpers and to our families for helping to make it a smooth and successful pro-gram. It has been great to hear that many students, inspired by our swimming program, have

taken up swimming lessons externally.

In Sport this term we had eight students

participate in the district golf tournament at Mt Xavier Golf Club.

We also have seven students competing in the Sovereign and Eureka

Division athletics next Friday 13th September at Llanberris reserve.

Last Thursday the 1/2 Unit had a Science Incursion. The focus was looking at how things move, focussing on Push and Pull. They participated in a number of experiments testing their theories and observing the outcomes. They looked at water, air and land. The children were given an opportunity to discuss their findings and to articulate their reasoning.

Archer “My favourite activity was making boats out of plasticine because you got to shape the plasticine any shape you want-ed.”

Poppy “My favourite activity was testing out the cars. The marble car was the fastest because it was smooth.”

Flicky “My favourite activity was making the rockets. We got to build them out of straws and we had to blow them towards a target.”

Connor “I liked the rockets the most because we got to make them. Mine had streamers and a straw. We had to test them by blowing through the straw.”

Cahill “We got to make the rockets and mine looked fast but when I tested it the rocket didn’t go that fast. I had a fun time.”
