    Resources for Instructional leaders on

    ESOL MethodologiesBy: Maria Sumner

Bureau of student achievement through language acquisitionhttp://www.fldoe.org/aala/

Instructional leaders can use this website resource to apply current and effective ESOL teaching methodologies in planning and

delivering instructions because this site shows us the features of the content based ESOL for all K-12 students in the public

school system in the state of Florida. There is a section in this site where it talks about each districts individual ELL plan. This

allows the instructional leader to design and implement effective unit plans and daily lessons which meets the needs of ESOL

students within the context of the regular classroom. This website also offers information on the college career readiness

advice for parents and students. Through this information, the instructional leader will be able to develop, implement, and

evaluate the instructional program which can help families make informed decisions about higher education. The site also

provides the instructional leader to apply content based ESOL approach to instruction through the CELLA testing that is

thoroughly discussed on the website. At the Bureau of student achievement through language acquisition website, the

instructional leader can find the requirements necessary for the entrance and exit tests for our students. Lastly, the site

provides a template of what the ELL students individualized plan looks like. This allows for the instructional leader to analyze

the students language and determine appropriate instructional strategies in order for the student to meet his/her goals.

Classroom Teachers ESLSurvival Kit #1By: Elizabeth Claire and Judie Haynes

This book is an excellent resource for instructional leaders when applying current and effective ESOL teaching methodologies in

planning and delivering instruction to ELL students due to the fact that the book shows a step by step approach from the first

day of school up to assessments throughout the school year. This resource also allows instructional leaders to design and

implement effective unit plans and daily lesson plans though some of the engaging hands on activities that the book provides.

An instructional leader can also develop, implement, and evaluate instructional programs in ESOL by using this resource

especially through the Helping ESL learners in the content area section. This resource allows instructional leaders to apply

content-based ESOL approach to instruction from the section that I just previously mentioned and also from a section in the

book titled teaching reading to your newcomers. The book also considers current trends and issues related to the testing of

linguistic and culturally diverse s students when using testing instruments and techniques. This is evident in the Testing,

report cards, and parent conferences section as well as the District Policies and practices that help ESL learners section.

Finally, this resource is effective for instructional leaders when analyzing student language and determining appropriate

instructional strategies, using knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax semantics, and discourse. This can be found in the

numerous reproducible activities that are included in the text. Some of these activities includes a letter match, color words,

labeling, comprehension questions and some word analysis.

    Consent Decreehttp://www.fldoe.org/aala/cdpage2.asp

The Consent Decree is the state of Floridas framework in order to give our ELL students the proper education that they

deserve. This website goes over all the important information that makes up the Consent Decree. The site is divided into 6

sections as these are the steps necessary to give our ELL students the proper instruction. The six sections are: identificationand assessment, equal access to appropriate programming, equal access to appropriate categorical and other programs for ELL

students, personnel, monitoring issues, and finally outcome measures. An instructional leader can apply current effective ESOL

methodologies in planning and delivering instruction to our ELL student using this site since under the section equal access to

appropriate programming, the instructional leader can find content based ESOL approach. This site is effective for designing

and implementing effective unit plans and daily lesson plans because it emphasizes on the importance of the curriculum for all

ESOL levels. An instructional leader can develop, implement, and evaluate instructional programs using this resource because

it goes over the different accommodations and support that our ELL students need. Applying content based ESOL approach to

instruction can be encouraged by the instructional leader by going over the difference between the ESOL standards and the

Language Arts curriculum. When instructional leader have strong understanding of both, he/she can help clarify

misconceptions that teachers might have. Finding an assessment that is necessary for our ELL students by introducing the

CELLA and the SALA information is provided in this site as well. This way, the instructional leader can be up to date on the

current trends and issues that is related to the testing of linguistic and culturally diverse students. This site also provides

information on the process of language acquisition. This is why the sections are important to abide by since this will not allow

for gaps to occur with our students. Being comfortable with this information helps the instructional leader to analyze studentlanguage and determine the appropriate instructional strategies, using knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax

    semantics, and discourse.

    ESL Resource Centerhttp://www.eslsite.com/index.html

The ESL Resource Center is a wonderful resource for instructional leaders, teachers, parents and students. This is a site packed

with so much information. An instructional leader can apply current and effective ESOL teaching methodologies in planning

and delivering instruction to our ELL students using this site because there are activities in this site that encourages language

experience approach lessons. An instructional leader can also use this information found on this site to design and implement

effective unit plans and daily lessons which meets the needs of our ESOL students within the context of the regular classroom.

An example would be the whole array of resources found on the different subject areas and topics so teachers can develop the

appropriate lessons for the students. An instructional leader who is developing, implementing and evaluating instructional

programs in ESOL can use this resource to help provide teachers with the knowledge on classroom management that is suitable

in an ESOL classroom. Applying content based ESOL approach to the instruction can be found through this site as well. There

are many lesson plans found in teaching content area reading to our ELL students. One of the interesting topics I found in this

site is on how instructional leaders consider current trends and issues related to the testing. There is a section in this resourcewhere it talks about assessment for teachers on how well they evaluate themselves as an ELL teacher and what their goals and

plans are for improvement. An instructional leader can use this site to analyze student language and determine appropriate

instructional strategies, using knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax semantics, and discourse. He/she can show the

teachers and support staff all the activities and resources in building students phonics skills, vocabulary, grammar, etc. One of

these activities is called build your own lexicon activity. Here the students get to research his/her own vocabulary word and

    learn dictionary skills as well.

    Hello Worldhttp://www.hello-world.com/learn/index.php?language=English&translate=English

Hello world is a website that offers numerous activities in 18 different languages. This website is fun and engaging for all

students eager to learn a new language or just to support a language program. Unfortunately, the program needs a

subscription in order to get the full version. This resource can help instructional leaders apply current and effective ESOLteaching methodologies in planning and delivering instruction to ELL students. This can be attained through the application of

ESOL approaches such as the use of visuals, interactive games and stories. The instructional leader can use this information to

design and implement effective unit plans and daily lessons since the ESOL activities offers cultural and linguistic activities. The

instructional leader can develop, implement and evaluate the instructional program because the resource provides individual,

small group and whole group activities. The instructional leader can also apply content based ESOL approaches to instruction

using this resource by the content specific vocabulary activities that engages the students. Hello World also allows instructional

leaders to consider current trends and issues related to the testing of linguistic and culturally diverse students when using

testing instruments and techniques. While teaching a new language, the program assesses the content of the lesson which the

teachers could easily tie in with the curriculum. Lastly, the resource allows the instructional leader to analyze student language

and determine appropriate instructional strategies, using knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax semantics, and

discourse. This is done through the use of foundational skills in different languages such as the phonics skills and basic counting
