This is the first edition of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa’s Buyer’s Guide and Directory combined with the Sustainable Business Yearbook published by Shorten Publi-cations.

We believe that the whole industry and all role players in the waste industry will benefit from this new venture. Duplication of effort has been eliminated and the combined publication can only improve the overall image of the industry.

All the information traditionally included in the Buyer’s Guide and Directory is once again in-cluded.

Being linked with the Sustainable Yearbook cre-ated the opportunity to include information about associated activities such as waste minimisa-tion, saving of resources, protection of the envi-ronment, reclaiming of materials from the waste stream and management of special waste.

What is the institute?The institute is a non-statuar y, non-profit, non-governmental, multi-disciplinar y professional organisation with voluntar y membership established to promote the science and practice of waste management.

The institute was established in 1976 by a group of municipal cleansing of fices concerned about the negative environmental impact of the waste handling and disposal practices of the day. While the initial focus was on domestic and trade waste, the scope gradually broadened to include all kinds of solid waste, excluding mining and quarr ying waste.

Waste management comprises a wide spectrum of actions and activities associated with the handling of residues generated by the manufacture, production, trade and consumption of goods and materials required by mankind.

It therefore includes matters such as prevention and avoidance, recover y and re-use, recycling and disposal. This in turn requires a sub-set of disciplines, including education and training, legislation and enforcement, involvement and par ticipation of and by procedures, manufacturers, commerce and the public at large, infrastructure and financial, economic and environmental considerations.

How does the institute meet these challenges?The institute endeavours to be, or become, involved in as many of the aspects mentioned by:• liaising and co-operating with:

– bodies representing manufacturing, trade and commerce

– related NGO’s and professional institutions– relevant governmental structures at all levels– citizen-based organisations– corresponding international organisations

• education, training and networking through, or by means of:– locally arranged seminars, workshops, training

courses, lectures and technical tours– WasteCon, the biennial international congress– Co-operation with statuar y governmental training

initiatives and registered training and education centres

• establishment and mentoring of focus groups in the fields of:– waste minimisation– healthcare waste– landfilling– transpor tation of waste

• publications: including the journal RéSource, the Waste Paper newsletter and the biennial Buyers Guide and Director y

• creation of af filiated organisations, including:– the South African Waste Management Employers

Association– chapters in neighbouring countries.

How do I become a member?There are membership classes to suit ever y person, organisation and structure with corresponding membership fees. You do not have to be actively involved in waste management of any kind, or to be highly skilled or trained, but if you are, you can become a voting or corporate member which gives you direct access to the running and operations of the institute.

1. Member Any person who :

• has been actively involved in waste management for a pe-riod of not less than one year, and

• is in possession of a qualification recognised for this pur-pose by the IWMSA Council.

2. Associate Member Any person who is not eligible for the member category above,

but who is interested in or connected with some aspect of waste management.

3. Fellow At time of going to press, the requirements had not yet been

finalised. 4. Senior Fellow An IWMSA Council member may nominate any Institute member

as a Senior Fellow, in recognition of age, appropriate experi-ence, qualifications, service to the Institute and conduct. A senior fellow is elected by a two-thirds majority of Council.

5. Organisation Member Company, municipality or organisation interested in, or con-

nected with, waste management. Fees for companies and or-ganisations are based on the number of employees. Fees for municipalities are based on the specific grade, i.e. Grade A - metropolitan municipality, Grade B - district municipality and Grade C municipality.

MISSION

The Institute of Waste Management is a non-aligned body committed to protecting the environment and people of southern Africa from the adverse effects of poor waste management. It does this by promoting environmentally acceptable, cost-effective waste management and by promoting the science and practice of professional waste management. • Expands its membership to include all waste management practitioners in the region.

1. This Code of Ethics shall be binding upon all members of the Institute and any breach thereof shall be dealt with by an ad hoc disciplinary committee constituted from time to time by the Council of the Institute.

2. Each members shall act in an honourable and ethical manner and his professional conduct shall, so far as possible, always have full regard to the interests of the public and his employer. Furthermore, his professional conduct shall at all times be conducive to maintaining the good reputation of the profession.

3. No member shall accept remuneration for any professional consultancy or advisory services rendered, other than with the approval of his/her employer or as contractually agreed to with the client.

4. No member shall endeavour to obtain any contract, service or sale other than through legally acceptable business practices.

5. No member shall attempt to falsely injure the professional reputation

of another member.6. No member shall review the work of another member for the

same client, except with the knowledge of the latter, unless such member’s engagement on the work which is subject to review has been terminated.

7. No member shall advertise his professional services in a self-laudatory or misleading manner, or in any way derogatory to the dignity or standing of the profession.

8. No member shall contravene any legislation pertaining to waste management. Subject to the necessary administrative procedures being in place.

9. No member shall publicly bring the name of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa into disrepute.

10. No member shall issue any statements on behalf of the Institute unless specifically authorised thereto by the official Institute spokesperson(s)

The Global Environment transcends the political affiliations of man. A clean environment is not only a constitutional right, but is also essential to ensuring a sustainable quality of life.

Professional waste management forms an integral part of protecting the environment and as such is essential for the im-provement and maintenance of the global living space.

The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWM-SA) is a professional organisation, whose main objective is to promote the science and practice of integrated waste manage-ment.

Professional and integrated waste management involves a ho-listic approach which ensures that waste is dealt with in an en-vironmentally responsible manner, from its generation at source through to its ultimate disposal (cradle-to-grave approach).

The institute thus endorses the integrated waste management concept which comprises and promotes:• Pollution prevention through cleaner production technolo-

gies and waste minimisation at source.• Financially viable and sustainable industrial, commercial

and residential resource recovery, reuse and recycling initia-tives.

• Volume reduction and processing to improve waste handling methods, thereby reducing environmental health and safety risks.

• Environmentally acceptable disposal methods on permitted and controlled landfills.

The institute, however, also encourages appropriate waste

management technologies by supporting the following con-cepts:• Integrated environmental management, especially consulta-

tion with interested and affected parties.• Best Practical and Sustainable Environmental Option and

training and education to waste management professionals in this regard.

In order to promote the science and practice of waste manage-ment, the institute encourages:• Research and development in this field.• The duty of care.• The channelling of all waste into the formal waste stream,

opposed to littering, dumping and misplacement of waste.The institute achieves its objectives through education, tech-

nology transfer and input into and support of local legislation. It also recognises international conventions. It supports the Ba-sel Convention but opposes the importation of hazardous waste into southern Africa.

The institute promotes co-operation with any person or body with complementary or similar objectives to its own.

Finally, where possible, the institute enforces member compli-ance with its objectives.
