General ThemeCommunities need many different types of people for

everything to run smoothly. However, many children fear community helpers. This unit will help address these fears by teaching children what the helpers do and how they do it.

The following is a five day resource unit on community helpers that will be presented to second graders at Valerie Elementary. This unit will begin on the first day of second quarter because the students will be familiar enough with the class routine to be able to go on field trips without being stressed out.

The students will be experiencing field trips, discussions, guest speaker, and in-class assignments.

Concepts and Vocabulary

The vocabulary the children will be expected to learn will come from the names of the equipment the the community helpers use. The students will be expected to understand why various community helpers are needed. The students will take what they have learned and expand it to community helpers that have not been discussed.

OBJECTIVES

Define community helpers. Identify the role and responsibilities of community helpers. Discuss how community helpers are important in society. Compare and contrast specifiedcommunity helpers. Identify other community helpersnot discussed.

Day One- DOCTOR

Introduction: I will have equipment used by doctors and will have a class discussion on the purpose of the equipment. Then I will read, I Want To Be A Doctor by Dan Liebman.

Day One- DOCTOR continued… Development:

1. Tell students that they are going to role-play some of the responsibilities of a doctor. Pick one out of the bag and model to the students how the game is played. Have one student pick a card out of the paper bag.

Day One – DOCTOR continued… 3. Ask the students what they have learned

about today and how that information is useful to them in their lives.

4. On a sheet of paper have students draw one of the responsibilities that they learned about today. Walk around the room and ask each student what specific things does this person do to help the community.

Day One- Doctor continued.. Outcome: Students

learn how doctors in a community are there to help us in times of emergencies --that is– doctors and invite them in to learn how to use the community emergency pages in the Ohio Directory.

Day 2 - Police OfficerIntroduction: Begin the topic of ‘Community Workers’ I will engage the class in a “K-W-L” chart using the overhead projector. (K= what you know; W=what you want to learn; L=what you’ve learned). We will complete the “K and W” columns first. Afterwards, I will read Police Officers Protect People by Carol Greene.

POLICE OFFICER continued…• Development:• Using the Storybook

Weaver Deluxe software, students will create a page where they will design a background picture. Then, the groups will type their research from their book on the bottom of the page.

Day Two-Police Officer continued...

Outcomes:

Students will understand the importance of police officers’ responsibilities and how it impacts society.

Day 3: Fire FightersIntroduction:

The teacher will begin by brainstorming what the students know about fire fighters and placing the answers on the K-W-L chart. The W portion will be filled out before the students start reading their books. The students will then pick three books from the baskets in their groups to read. All of the books are focused on fire fighters. The class will then finish filling in the K-W-L chart.

Outcome: The students learn about what a fire fighter does and what they wear. This information should help the students to not fear fire fighters if they see them.

Day 3: Fire Fighters- continued

Development:

The teacher will hand out a worksheet that will list the lengths of several pieces of equipment that fire fighters use. The students will then use rulers and yard sticks to discover how long the equipment is. The students will also design their own fire fighting outfits. They will write a story about what they think a day in the life of a fire fighter might be like.

Day 4: BakeryIntroduction:

The students will participate in a half day field trip to a local bakery. The baker will discuss why he wears what he wears. The baker will discuss some of the duties that he or she has.

Outcome:

The students will learn what a baker wears and what he or she does. They will also learn that the duties of a job position are not always obvious.

Day 4: Bakery- continued

Development:

The class will discuss what needs to be included in a recipe. Examples might include ingredients, amount of each ingredient, and the steps to put the ingredients together. The students will design a recipe of their own. The class will vote on which recipe the class will make.

Day 5: Post Office

Introduction:

A post office worker will come to the classroom to discuss what he or she wears and why. He or she will also discuss some of the duties that he or she is responsible for. The worker can discuss many of the jobs that are held at the post office. The worker will discuss some of the equipment that is used in the post office.

Outcome:

The students will learn what a post office worker wears and why. They will learn the different jobs that are done at the post office.

Day 5: Post Office- continued

Development:

After appropriate instruction, the students will write a letter to a classmate. The students will mail their letters. A few students will be chosen to be the post office workers. The class will walk the students through what needs to be done.
