(www.avisbudgetgroup. com) Thank you AVIS ATL Hartsfield. Diabetes Is Reversible by Dr. Keith Ungar The common thread I find with most diabetics is that they are frustrated. Why is that? They are given a diagnosis, put on medications, told to lose weight, exercise, and eat better. They are never told how to do these things by their doctor and it is very frustrating. Now occasionally they will be sent to a dietician who tells them to count their calories and switch from white bread to wheat bread, but this a “one size fits all” approach can actually cause diabetics to get worse. The complications that diabetics fear the most tend to be heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, and even amputations. So why does diabetes tend to get worse over time and not better? The problem is that diabetes is usually managed at a symptom level. Typically the medications are the same for most people and those treatments are aimed at lowering the blood sugar. Traditional medical treatments do not try to determine the underlying cause(s) that are driving the blood sugars up in the first place. If fact, some diabetic medications cause weight gain. Your doctor is telling you to lose weight but the medication is causing you to gain weight! Every time your doctor runs a blood test and your Hb A1c increases, what do they do? They increase your medication dosages until you are maxed out on the oral diabetics medications. The next step is insulin. How long do you have to be on that? For the rest of your life so they say. I am here to tell you that DOES not need to happen. Diabetic treatments are Insanity? If you look at all the research on diabetes it shows the majority of diabetics get worse over time not better. The conventional medicine approach for diabetics has not changed much over the years and they keep doing the same approach even though diabetics are still getting worse over time not better. The definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result. So if you want to have a different outcome then you must first start with a different approach. The functional medicine approach does just that. We do specialized extensive testing aimed at identifying unique imbalances in the body that explains why an individual has difficulty controlling their blood sugar. We are able to specifi- cally determine each patient’s individual triggers or causes of why they have diabetes. From there, we formulate a custom- ized treatment plan to eradicate or address those imbalances. cont. p. 8 Cut Your Cancer Risk by Avoiding the Meat Counter by Keith Block, M.D., author Life Over Cancer (photo Keith Block, M.D. Penny Block, Ph.D.) Sometimes medical studies don’t just un- cover new health-related facts - they also serve as useful reminders. One that does just that appeared in the August 2 online edition of the medical journal Cancer. In this study, researchers found that ad- ditives in processed meats - including nitrites, heterocyclic amines (HCAs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) - can contribute to bladder cancer. In the study, researchers followed the study partici- pants – approximately 300,000 men and women aged 50-71 years – for seven years and tallied the results of the dietary questionnaires they completed. They found 854 people di- agnosed with bladder cancer, with those who had the most nitrite in their diets – from all sources including meat – and those with the highest intake of nitrate plus nitrite from meats, had a 28-29% increased risk of developing bladder cancer, compared to those with the lowest intakes. The association of processed meats - including bacon, and a slew of luncheon meats - commonly called “cold cuts” – with cancer is not new. There have been earlier studies that found similar links. For example: Earlier this year, the Journal of Family Health Care published recommendations on dietary aspects of cancer pre- vention from the World Cancer Research Fund Internation- al in London. After an expert panel reviewed the evidence, which they graded “convincing” or “probable”, they pro- duced a series of 10 recommendations to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Pioneer in Geodesic Homes: Pacific DomesFounded in 1980, Pacific Domes, the original shelter domes manufacturer, has spent the last 30 years perfecting the function and beauty of its geodesic domes. Today Pacific Domes manufactures domes for a multiplicity of uses. But why domes? Pacific Domes clients answer that question best. Three featured projects demonstrate the breadth and reach of the dome as a healing space, an architecturally advanced shelter, and a creative commons.

The Crib, USALocated at the base of the the Sul-phur and T o p a t o p a mountains, Ojai, Cal-i f o r n i a , nicknamed the “Shan-gri-La” of S o u t h e r n C a l i f o r -nia, boasts a beautiful natural land-scape. In search of the ideal yoga crib, the Ojai Foun-

dation turned to Pacific Domes for a structure that complements the beauty and high frequen-cy of its yoga pilgrimage site. The open interior of the geodesic dome allows for freedom of movement, and its circular structure gives teachers the option to set up practice at the center or any point along the perimeter. The yoga dome is personalized to facilitate group yoga classes and meditation. The fundamental geometry of the dome replicates the geometry of our bodies’ molecules, providing the ultimate structure for personal healing and growth.

Weltevreden Domes Retreat, AustraliaThis high-end eco retreat nestled in 90 acres of Australian bush land offers a sanctuary of peace and tranquility. The complete retreat from restaurant to room has been designed using domes both for their natural healing environment and unique structure. The retreat center was created around the domes because they cover more space without internal supports than any other enclosure, and they become proportionally lighter and stronger the larger they are. The dome has no stagnant corners and allows for continuous airflow, requiring less energy to maintain temperatures. Weltevreden has used domes to accomplish its dream of creating luxury dome accommodations down under.

Loveland Farms, UKSpearheaded by fashion designer couple Jeff and Karin Griffin, Loveland Farms, a sustain-able campsite, has become a project that encompasses far more than just camping. The dy-namic team envisioned a space that would foster an environment of relaxation and creativity. The dome became the center for this vision. The open floor plan and light filled interior has become the camp’s center. Loveland Farm uses its dome to highlight the beauty of the basics, and provides the Griffins an architecturally inspiring structure to share with the world. Their dream of creating an oasis away from the busy modern world continues to evolve, but the offering of a creative and sustainable getaway is a constant. (www.pacificdomes.com)

How does an infant born in Cleveland, Ohio, become a commander in an elite brigade of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)? For Beni Simon, the road was rocky, but it led to satisfying heights. When he was eight months old, Beni’s family made aliyah. Immersed in Israeli life, yet possessing a strong iden-tifi cation with his American roots, Beni wasn’t sure who he really was or where he was going. An undistinguished school career, during which he admits he “never did any work and in fact got to the point of not knowing how to learn,” set him on the journey for a lifetime of failure. Success as an adult in Israeli society is dependent on successful army service. When the IDF recruiter told him that he lacked the usual indicators necessary to be accepted by the army, Beni thought he was through. Fortunately, though, Beni qualifi ed for the Federa-tion supported MAKAM program designed for at-risk youth. At the end of his fi rst day of basic training at Havat HaShomer, the base that houses the MAKAM program, Beni told his commanding offi cer, “I made a big mistake. I have spent so many years trying to ignore any kind of authority. I’ll never make it in the army.” His commander, specially trained to work with at-risk soldiers, listened to Beni as he explained his concerns. “She was non-judgmental. Her compassion, patience, understanding, and acceptance made a difference,” says Beni. “For the fi rst time in my life I decided I was going to be successful. I was going to make sure that I became a good soldier.”

Jewish Federation of Cleveland has partnered with the IDF to better the lives of more than 9,000 soldiers at the Havat HaShomer army base through computer train-ing, health and self-esteem empowerment, and educational and vocational preparation. This partnership is the fi rst and only program between the IDF and a Diaspora community that aims to address vital needs within Israeli society.www.jewishcleveland.org; [email protected];

A High-ly Effective Treatment for Anxiety, Depression, and In-somnia without Serious Side Effects Nancy E. White PhD, LPC, LMFT, AAC Unique Mind Care, Houston, TX 77056 .ABSTRACT Recent research has raised questions about the effectiveness of medications long considered a standard of care in the treatment of these conditions. In light of this information it seems appro-priate to explore alternative therapies that demonstrate a high level of effectiveness in mediating anxiety and de-pression without serious side effects.

Moreover, the num-ber of people exhibiting symptoms of depression and anxiety continues to grow and is projected to contin-ue growing through 2020. Persons who cannot fi nd an effective solution to their depression or anxiety tend to get worse and develop dysfunctional behaviors and habits as they seek to com-pensate, making treatment even more complex. These behaviors and habits not only complicate treatment, but can speed the progress of degenerative diseases and advance the aging process.

If you look at nutrition research, however, you’ll find that the op-timal intake of fruits and vegeta-bles is at least 11 servings a day. Such foods contain thousands of chemicals called phytonutrients that are not found anywhere else, including most supplements. Most phytonutrients pro vide

po tent detoxifying and antioxidant effects. That’s the reason fruits and vegetables help prevent the two greatest killers: cardiovascular disease and cancer. The plant chemicals are so potent that they can interact with genes in many of their ac-tivities in the body. A recent example of the power of natural foods comes from a study involving asparagus. Asparagus has natural diuretic and antiviral proper-ties and fosters antimutagenic activity, or the destruction of incipient tumors. The vegetable’s only known side effect is that it can impart a pungent odor to urine in some people. The odor comes from the six sulfur compounds, including DMSO, that it contains. The odor of asparagus also varies with the genetics of people who eat it and is not exhibited or even detected by everyone. In the new study asparagus was found to have po-tent insulin-stimulating effects while simul taneously inhibit-ing starch digestion. An in vitro, or isolated-cell, study, the experiment involved pancreatic cells, which secrete insulin. When the cells were exposed to both an asparagus extract and glucose, or sugar, insulin activity increased by 19 to 248 per-cent. The extract produced an 81 percent increase of glucose uptake into fat cells, an effect attributed to a possible increase in cellular glucose-transporting proteins. Asparagus also pro-duced a 21 percent decrease in starch digestion. The effect is connected to an interaction with calci-um ions in the beta cells of the pancreas, where insulin is syn-thesized and released. A drug that blocks calcium ion activity also prevented the effect of asparagus on insulin release from the beta cells. How can bodybuilders use the information? First, eating asparagus may be useful for those with a genetic pre-disposition for diabetes, because asparagus may help increase insulin effectiveness. Since insulin is also a potent anabolic hormone, asparagus may be useful for those who want to in-crease insulin release for purposes of increased muscle pro-tein and glycogen synthesis. While the starch-blocking effect sounds useful for promoting fat loss, the authors note that it may not work as well in the human body as it does in a cell culture.

Our Story-Equal Exchange has created Big Change for over 25 years. It all started with an idea: what if food could be traded in a way that is honest and fair, a way that em-powers both farmers and consumers? Our founders - Rink Dickinson, Jonathan Rosenthal and Michael Rozyne - asked this question as they envisioned a trade model that values farm-ers and consumers. So they took a big risk and plunged full-force into changing a broken food system. In 1986, they started with fairly traded coffee from Nicaragua and didn’t look back. Read our story Our Model-At Equal Exchange we believe that we should expect no less from ourselves and each other than we demand of our farmer partners. For that reason we have or-ganized ourselves as a democratic worker cooperative, now one of the largest in the country. A worker cooperative is an alternative for-profit structure based upon standard democratic principles. It is not designed to maximize profits, nor returns to investors, but rather to bring to the workplace many of the rights and responsibilities that we hold as citizens in our com-

The best foods for weight loss (and the worst)by James J. Kenney, PhD, FACN Nutrition Research Special-ist, Pritikin Longevity Center How many calories do you eat, per bite? That’s what the best foods for weight loss are all about. Their calorie density, which is the number of calories contained in any given weight of food, is low. Here’s a good example. With a bowl of fettuccine Alfredo, you’re taking in about 50 calories per bite. Now, if you switch the Alfredo for a bowl of whole-wheat pasta with roasted veggies and marinara, your calorie intake is slashed to less than 25 calories per bite. When you’re on calorie density “watch,” you’re getting a

lot of nice satisfying bites, and eating till you’re comfortably full, without going overboard on calories. Your goal is choosing foods that are LOW in calorie density. Usually, low-calo-rie-dense foods are high in WATER and FIBER content. Examples include vegetables, fruits, cooked whole grains, oatmeal, cooked beans and legumes, nonfat dairy, soy products, and lean animal proteins. Foods that are HIGH in calorie density tend to be DRY and/or FATTY. Each bite is jam-packed with calories. Examples include butter, oils, regular salad dressings, sugar, nuts, seeds, dry bread, dry cereal, crackers, avocados, and dried fruit. Notice that the low-calorie-dense foods have one other big bonus. They’re full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients, and are naturally low in sodium, which makes them a great choice for not only shedding weight but also lowering blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugars. The fact is, we could easily reverse our country’s exploding health care budget if we threw out all the calorie counters and followed a simple calorie density chart instead (like the one below). There are just 4 key rules for weight-loss success:The more foods in the first 2 cate-gories (veggies and fruits) you eat, the better. For at least 90% of your daily diet, stick with the 5 categories in green (from vegetables to calcium-rich foods). Pick 1 food from the orange category, and no more than 4 ounces a day to keep your arteries in good shape. (Or select protein-rich plant sources like tofu and beans.)

Start asking where you get your Omega-3 fatty acids and you’ll gain an insight into the root causes behind many cardiovascular and infl ammatory diseases hat pervade the U.S. population. As operations manager for a Hemp seed snacks company, this subject comes up a lot. The defi cit of good fats and an ever-fl owing abundance of junky oils and animal fats is so common to American diets. We are lucky to be gaining a clearer understanding of how nutritional imbalances like these affect our health and physiology. The imperative of restoring healthy fat intake becomes even more urgent when we see obese individuals having a tough time or hear from people who don’t really know what fats they’re eating. An easy place any label reader can start is to look out for, and limit, shelf-stable/most-

ly GMO groceries heavy on canola, corn, soybean, cottonseed oils. Re-placing these with healthier fats from whole-food nuts/seeds, avocados, and using Hemp seed oil as a proportion of salad dressing, can profoundly nourish inter-cellular synaptic and metabolic functioning. The Essential Omega Fatty Acids enable our bodies to carry out necessary processes. But for those of us eating animal products every day, we do so at our own per-il. Consider the artery hardening and weight gaining, saturated fats, choles-

terol, and the fat-soluble persistent pollutants (i.e. dioxin, mercury) that come with animal fats. This won’t support our brains, skin, or digestive health in any of the ways that Omega-3s can. In my experience turning vegetarian, eliminating animal fats was the most noticeable step to help in feeling clearer and lighter on my feet. Attitude and alertness improved and even my emotional life felt richer. That’s just after getting rid of meat. Ditching dairy while incorporating Hemp seed and more nuts facilitated a real transformation. My evolution in fat intake positively affected my body weight (lost 20lbs), metabolism, and mental clarity. Taking the nutritional empowerment another step for the community, I established Plant Kingdom Hemp seed Bakery in Akron, Ohio in 2008. Demonstrating that Hemp seed holds extensive appeal is exciting and challenging. Some have needed a great deal of infor-mation to begin considering making use of Hemp seeds. “Will I fail a drug test?” they’ll ask. No, see www.testpledge.com. “It looks like bird food!” Birds also fl y and are being killed by pesticides... But seriously, we don’t blend our ingredients into a date-pastey glob like some energy bars. The seeds and grains remain intact. It’s about creating pleasant and distinctive mouth-sensations like crispy, chewy fruity, nut buttery gooey, and snappy-crunchy (whole hemp seed products). Only having a few moments with people passing Plant Kingdom’s vending table, I’m quick to dispense with the FAQs, common misunderstandings around Hemp, hesitations, and not-even-funny jokes about getting stoned.“Keep it serious” I tell myself. After all, the Drug Enforcement Agency’s prohibition on Hemp is no laughing matter. It’s an insult to our efforts to make ethical resource choices and has criminalized our own free will to determine a traditional relationship with the land. But the bright side is getting brighter every day! Over ten states have legalized Indus-trial Hemp farming at the State level. Increased exposure through Whole Foods, Dr Oz, and more mainstream media, has made Plant Kingdom’s work much more brisk. Now when we’re out vending at a North East Ohio farmers market or neighborhood festival, most people have an idea of what we’re talking about: whole foods, plant protein, super-food energy, that’s sus-tainable to grow and can prevent over-fi shing by replacing fi sh oil supplements for Omegas! With no intoxicating potential! Ancient Grain Revered by the Amish Discovered by Michigan Co. Purity Foods, Makers of Vita Spelt and Nature’s Legacy-(Read more below and learn about their delicious, non gmo, non sticky, whole grain pasta)For many, if not most, among our New Year’s resolutions is to shed some pounds and/or

get in better shape. The goal can be formi-dable, after all, how do you think we got to this point? Often times some steps along the way seemed more like punishment than reward. Am I right? We know that eating right and exer-cise are two key parts to getting healthy and staying that way. Anyone can guess that I am a food expert. Essential to any healthy eating program is two things: 1) healthy food, 2) food that tastes good! These two factors are equally important.

Comparisons to Modern Day Wheat-Let me tell you about a delectable

ancient grain that has existed, unchanged by man for over 8000 years. Unlike modern day grains which have in the very least been hybridized if not genetically modified. Take wheat for an example, since 1948 man has created over 40,000 hybrid, high yielding varieties of wheat. That is correct; these wheats were primarily created to attract purchase by their cus-tomer, the farmer and the farmer wants more yield. Very little, if any thought, was given to the digestibility or nutrient value of the grain. That attitude permeates most of agriculture today; consumers should be aware. Health Benefits to this ancient grain: Back to nature, this grain has more mag-nesium which is actually used in over 18000 bodily functions, more cobalt which is nec-essary in the formation of B vitamins, more vitamin B1 and B3, more manganese which is necessary for all life forms and more zinc which is necessary in strengthening our immune system. This grain is legendary for its digestibility and as such was used as an elixir by 10th century St. Hildegard of Bingen who has been canonized and most recently been named a Doctor of the Church. Besides tasting good, this grain is easily digested, healthy, natural and nutritious. Purity Foods introduced spelt to the United States consumer over 20 years ago. It had been and was being grown in the United States prior to that time but mostly for animal feed. Many Amish grow it for their horses; a pretty valuable possession for an Amish man. Why was the speltz as the old timers called it just used for feed? When spelt grows it develops a heavy husk that surrounds two of the seeds. This husk does not come off in the harvesting equipment that you see in a farmer’s fields. To remove the hull takes special equipment as well as equipment designed for dust control. The average farmer recognized that his animals benefitted from eating spelt and enjoyed eating it so it was relegated to animal feed, hull and all. Purity Foods began to have it dehulled. It was not an easy process. The paths included many blind alleys, but nothing worthwhile is achieved overnight. The hull is an important part of why spelt is good for us. With recent attention paid to the lack of digestibility of modern day free threshing wheat many scientists including gastroenterologists and cereal grain chemists point to the enzyme inhibitors found in wheat. You see it is with enzymes that living things like insects and humans digest their food. When an insect attacks a virtually naked wheat kernel in the field he injects his enzymes into the kernel; those enzymes then digest carbohydrates (amylase enzyme) or proteins (protease enzyme) or both and the insect finishes his meal. The plant senses the activity, yes truly- it is called wounding and sends more enzyme inhibitors to the remaining parts of the plant and kernels to discourage the attack from that or other insects. The remain-ing plant and wheat kernels survive only to be harvested, milled into flour and made into bread which some of us have a hard time digesting. Oh, if the wheat only had a hull on it! There are many other aspects to spelt that make this grain so unique and prompted so many calls to my phone from consumers who began the conversation, “Thank God for you guys; you changed my life. “ We would like to help you in making your life better as well. One way you can give it a try is to cook one of our 16 dry pasta items. For those people who have a hard time with the concept of eating whole grain, Purity Foods has 7 white pastas; but, believe me, the whole grain pasta is awesome! Both white and whole pasta cook in boiling water in under 5 minutes! That has to tell you something about the digestibility. There is no starchy residue that has to be washed off the pasta or the utensils. The whole grain pasta is 100% whole grain, not 51% that our FDA has allowed pasta manufacturers to call whole grain. The whole grain in a 2 ounce serving provides 20% of our recommended fiber intake. Purity Foods dehulls the grain and mills the flour as well and because of our desire to get it right, we developed a proprietary milling process that mills the whole grain flour so that it will pass through a 600 micron screen which is a designated screen size for white flour. The result is; no gritty texture on your tongue. Did I mention that all of our pasta is 100% organic and that we also are approved as Non GMO Verified? Lastly, Nature’s Legacy whole grain pasta works for many who have to watch their blood sugar levels. I did not just assume it would; we had it tested. Of those 16 dry pastas, we have 3 that take a little longer to cook because they have additional ingredients : two have flax seed flour for omega 3ís and the other has spinach and tomato flour for color-ing in making a tri color rotini dish. All of our other dry pastas have two ingredients : flour and water. How much more natural can you get than that? Without Man’s Intervention, Nature did it right; that is why our retail pasta and snacks are called Nature’s Legacy. In this day of over processed foods, is there a more fitting name? www.natureslegacyforlife.com

When Bruegger’s Bagels opened its first bakery in Troy, N.Y., in 1983, it was esti-mated that less than one-third of Americans had ever tasted a bagel. Company founders Nord Brue and Mike Dressell would change that by perfecting an authentic New York-style bagel with a crisp shell and soft, chewy center, and sharing it with the rest of the nation. Today, utilizing that same artisan baking heritage, bagels are still kettle-boiled and baked in stone hearth ovens in small batches throughout the day at each of Bruegger’s Bagels’ 300 locations. The company still relies on the same recipe for its bagels with just five core ingredients: flour, water, malt, yeast and salt. Over the years, Bruegger’s Bagels has expanded to many communities and devel-oped new traditions and products including its cold-packed, 100 percent made-in-Vermont cream cheese, which was introduced to bakeries in 1985; its Bottomless Mug Club, which gained popularity in 1990; and St. Patrick’s Day Green Bagels, which were first baked in Boston in the 1990s. Its menu now includes more than 20 different bagel varieties made with fresh, high quality and simple ingredients. Bruegger’s also offers its guests a variety of menu items that includes fresh-baked breads, custom-roasted coffee, breakfast sandwiches, garden-fresh salads, hearty soups, lunch sandwiches, panini and desserts, with a frequently changing menu reflecting seasonal and geographical specialties. Food Nutrition and Health for Holy Crap Cereal says, “Aside from the nutritional content of these cereals being top notch, they will help to sustain your blood sugar levels and keep you satisfied until lunch. That’s something I always

look for in a breakfast cereal! With nothing refined or altered added, your body knows exactly what to do with a product like this. Just eat real food! Compare sources of omega-3 and omega-6 . There is more omega-3 and omega-6 in a serving of Holy Crap cereal or Skinny B cereal than a serving of wild Atlantic salmon. A photograph sent by the astronaut showing Holy Crap from the International Space Station, inspired the British-Columbia company to create single serve cereal cups for customers, not just in space, but all over the world. The cereal cups can be eaten either hot or cold – on earth or in orbit. The com-pany renamed its signature cereal to “Holy Crap” in the early stages of development. The change mirrored what customers said when tasting the cereal – often followed by “This is good.” While the name is an at-tention-grabber, the product is a quality raw food with

Omega 3 rich chia seeds, hemp and buckwheat, dried cranberries and apples, that keep cus-tomers wanting more, say company officials. An appearance on the Canadian reality TV Dragon’s Den boosted interest in Holy Crap breakfast cereal just about a year after it rolled out its first product in 2009. The popular show gives aspiring entrepreneurs a chance to pitch their products to heavy-hitter investors and exposure on national TV.. Recently the science/health news has been abuzz with interesting results demonstrating that the bacteria in the gut can influence

body type, specifically obesity.

(http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/352966/descrip-tion/A_gut_infection_can_keep_mice_lean). The bacteria pres-ent in the gut varies between lean and obese people. Further, in a mouse model, bacteria transplanted from an obese person actually causes more obesity than bacteria transplanted from a lean person. We are learning that these little bacteria in our gut influence health and disease in important ways. To learn more about this, researchers put mice colonized with bacteria from lean people and mice colonized with bacteria from obese people in the same cage. Mice eat poop, thereby

‘auto-transplanting’ the bacteria from their partner mouse into their own gut. What happened when the bacteria promoting obesity met the bacteria promoting leanness? The ‘lean’ bacteria won (depending on dietary conditions). Bacteria from the mice colonized with ‘lean’ bacteria changed the bacterial profile of their partner mouse and the partner mouse, even though they started out with the ‘obese’ bacteria, gained less weight (depending on the diet consumed). Some of the recent news headlines have described these findings that bacterial transplants may control obesity and stopped there. Like many other news items, we are left with the impres-sion that maybe we are just around the corner from controlling obesity with a pill or procedure (in this case a bacterial colony pill or procedure that is some equivalent to a poop transplant). But this idea really misses a crucial point, in my opinion. The mice were fed either a diet low in saturated fat and richer in plant components or a diet with more saturated fat and less plant components. These diets represented a ‘healthy’ human diet or the ‘unhealthy’ human diet. Guess what? The only animals that showed a benefit from the bacterial transplant were those animals who were fed the healthy human diet, with low saturated fat and more healthy plant components. The animals that got the high saturated fat, low plant component diet had full weight gain despite eating the ‘lean’ bacteria. The trump card? Diet. Researchers from this group had earlier published results showing that the bacterial composition of the gut can change significantly within a single day of eating a high fat, high sugar unhealthy diet. This research is tremendously exciting. It appears that the world of bacteria in our gut has very important ramifications for our health. I have no doubt this type of research will yield significant new understandings, new approaches, and new treatments for our more common maladies. Though we have much to learn I also suspect that this world of human-bacteria in-teraction will prove to be yet another world of mechanisms by which we show diet is likely the single greatest master of our health and that optimal nutrition comes from plant-based diets (as supported by this research). C2 specializes in cultural cuisine from Mediterranean countries that are rich and diverse in culinary traditions, includ-ing Spain, France, Morocco, Israel, Greece, Turkey, Italy and Egypt. Mediterranean cuisine emphases primarily plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts; using healthy fats like olive oil instead of butter; replacing salt with herbs and spices for flavor; and regularly eating fish and poultry, while limiting red meat. Using the most flavorful ingredients found in these coast-al regions, C2 features a selection of dishes that are good for you and unbelievably good to eat. In fact, our urban garden on the

C2 patio allows us to harvest many ingredients for our Mediterranean dishes from, literally, our backyard. Our restaurant garden features assorted herbs and vegetables, including basil, thyme and rosemary, as well as tomatoes, bell peppers and chili peppers. We intend to plant and cultivate a more robust array of herbs and vegetables this year, and will utilize the freshly grown ingredients into our C2 dishes. A study appearing in the March 7, 2006 issue of the NCI Cancer Bulletin, in-volving more than a half million men and women in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort, found a significant associa-tion between a type of gastric (stomach) cancer and pro-cessed meat consumption. A 2005 study appearing in the June 6, 2006 issue of the Journal of the National Can-cer Institute found a link be-tween processed meats and pancreatic cancer. There are many oth-er studies with similar results I could list, but I think the point has been made. By the way, there is another food choice men-tioned in these other studies as potentially dangerous, and at the risk of inciting cattle-men, it’s the kind of food that goes “moo”; red meat. Besides processed meats, the three studies I listed above also point to a causal rela-tionship between red meat and various cancers. In fact, regular consumption of red meat has been linked with cancers of the lung, breast esophagus, larynx, stomach, kidney, endometrium, ova-ries and prostate. So what are these dangerous compounds in meat?Nitrites and nitrates are members of a class of chem-icals known as nitrosamines which are added to food as a preservative and to en-hance the appearance of the products. These foods in-clude sausage, hot dogs, ba-con, lunch meat, and canned meats and soups. They have long been shown to be harm-ful to both humans and ani-mals. Nearly all processed meats are made with sodium nitrite - a proven precursor to highly carcinogenic nitro-samines. When consumers eat processed, cured meat products, nitrosamines are formed in the body that, research shows, can pro-mote the growth of various cancers. This should not be confused with the natural-ly-occurring nitrates found in fruits and vegetables, which are NOT harmful. H e t e r o c y c l i c amines (HCAs) are the car-cinogenic chemicals formed from the cooking of muscle meats including beef, pork and fowl. HCAs form when amino acids - the building blocks of proteins - and cre-atine, a chemical found in muscles, react at high cook-ing temperatures. Research-ers have identified 17 different HCAs resulting from the cooking of muscle meats that may pose human cancer risk. One study, by research-ers from NCI’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, discovered a link between individuals with stomach cancer and the con-sumption of cooked meats. The research-ers found that those who cooked beef medium-well or well-done had more than three times the risk of stom-ach cancer than those who cooked meat rare or medi-um-rare. They also found that people who ate beef four or more times a week had more than twice the risk of stomach cancer than those who ate beef less frequently. Other studies have found an increased risk of developing colorectal, pancreatic, and breast cancer with high in-takes of well-done, fried, or barbecued meats. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of over 100 different chemicals that are formed during the incomplete burn-ing of coal, oil and gas, gar-bage, or organic substances like charbroiled meat. Taking the Bite out of your Head, Neck, and Jaw Joint Pains by Scott L. Rose, D.D.S Many people suffer from a variety of head, neck and shoulder pains, and headaches. A lot of people accept this as a normal sign of aging. An equal number of people have tried many types of treatments and medications only to be disappoint-ed time and time again by poor outcomes. But did you know that some of these aches and pains may be caused by an incorrect biting position. That’s right! If your bite is off, the muscles of your face may go into chronic spasms, or not be working at their ideal length. These muscles may be overworking in order to maintain your present bite position. Different muscles work to-gether to open and close your jaw. They are also used for chew-ing, and swallowing. These muscles are not only in the area of your jaw joint. The jaw positioning muscles run up and down the neck, through the cheeks, into the forehead, and around the ears. Some even wrap around the skull. Every time you chew and swallow, the

teeth must either come together or come very close to each other. Therefore, where the teeth want the muscles to be and where the muscles want to be may be totally different. Our bodies can accommodate only so much. When the muscles can no longer accom-modate – this translates into aches, pains, and headaches. When muscles do not get a chance to rest, they soon suffer from poor circulation.

This leads to a lack of needed oxygen and the accumulation of waste products of metabolism. This fuels the cycle of pain. Your habitual bite may be not be what is best for you. Even if you have great teeth, your bite may be off. So even if you do not have “common” dental problems, this does not mean that your bite is not affecting your overall health. Occlusal disease can create just as many problems if not more than dental decay. A bad tooth effects the one tooth. A bad bite can effect the entire mouth, muscles, joints, and posture. Neuromuscular Dentistry is the art and science of us-ing the relaxed position of the muscles of the head and neck to properly place the jaw in its optimal position. Years of clinical experience and research has shown this technique to be effective in treating patients with a variety of head and neck pain, includ-ing TMJ. Neuromuscular Dental Therapy is also used for Cos-metic procedures. When you restore patients to their new re-laxed position, this also restores facial balance and harmony. Not only will you feel great, you will look great too! Those patients that are seeking state of the art care and treatment, or those patients that are tired of edu-cated guesses, trial and error treatment protocols, should re-evaluate by what philosophy they would like their care and treatment to be guided by. Dr. Rose says, “Our success is in the philosophy of taking a neuromuscular approach in all facets of our dentistry!” A graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry, Dr. Rose has been the recipient of numerous awards and fel-lowships, with his research published in many professional dental journals. In addition to private practice, Dr. Rose has been the Dental Director for Brentwood Health Care Skilled Nursing Facility and was on the taff of University Hospital Bedford Medical Center. He has acted as a consultant to a major dental manufacturing company and was the offi cial dentist for the Bedford Police Department. He is listed in the National Registry of Whoʼs Who in 2000. Dr. Roseʼs commitment to education and passion for his profession are evident in the extensive post-graduate studies he has pursued. He has completed the Master Aesthetic Dental Program at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), the worldʼs premier center for the study of aesthetic and neuromuscular dentistry. Dr. Rose has received extensive post-doctoral training in Neuromuscu-lar Dentistry at the world renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Your Health Shouldn’t Come at a Cost - The Safe Alternative to Harmful NSAIDs By: Sarah Holvik, B.Sc. Nutritional Science Have you heard that an aspirin a day was the magic bullet for preventing heart disease and stroke? Most people have despite concerns over the safety of daily aspirin use being no se-cret for the past decade. While aspirin and other non-ste-roidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for their effectiveness in relieving pain and inflammation and preventing blood clots leading to heart attacks and stroke, their efficacy comes at a cost – the risk of internal

bleeding and stomach ulcers. Until recently, preventative aspirin was still prescribed regularly as the risk to benefit ratio remained unclear to health professionals world-wide. However, the truth always prevails and the NSAID debate is no exception to this rule. A recent report by the Drugs and Therapeutics Bulletin (DTB) confirms the dangers of using aspirin to prevent heart attack and stroke in people without cardio-vascular disease, even in high risk populations such as patients with diabetes or high blood pressure. The report advises that daily aspirin use should only be prescribed to those with serious preexisting heart and circulatory conditions. This decision is based on studies involving over 95,000 patients demonstrating the risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding with preventative daily aspirin use far outweighs its non-sig-nificant impact on cardiovascular deaths.

These results represent a turning point in medical history, and leave people wonder-ing what they can substitute for their old faithful NSAIDs. Exciting research emerging

from the natural health sector may provide the solution. Clinical research on a patented natural mineral supplement called SierraSil Joint Formula14™ (JF14)

confirms that daily use of SierraSil JF14 decreases pain and inflammation without the dangerous side effects of NSAIDs. This compelling research offers hope that

widespread use of natural supplements in reducing the severity of chronic conditions associated with arthritis could have a significant benefit to health outcomes.

According to a randomized, double blind, multi centered, placebo-controlled clinical trial, the highest level of pharmaceutical study, SierraSil JF14 provides signifi-cant relief of symptoms of osteoarthritis, including joint and muscle aches and stiffness associated with exercise and movement, within 14 days of use. Further research into the mechanism behind these therapeutic effects shows that SierraSil JF14 reduces inflammation and cartilage breakdown in the joints. While these are relatively small studies, these clinically significant results were experienced without the high price of side effects or toxicity issues associated with NSAIDs. The safety of SierraSil JF14 is also backed by OECD protocolled studies and medical analyses which further confirm its absence of safety concerns. From this research, one thing is abundantly clear. The old medical paradigm of regular NSAID use is in the past, and a new ideology is being born – that is, your health shouldn’t have to come at a cost. As many of us embrace safe and effective alternatives like SierraSil JF14, we have the opportunity to enjoy pain-free and dis-ease-free lives without worrying about the opposite side of the health coin. www.sierrasil.com/healthy-referral or call 877-743-7720 mention you read in Healthy Referral. see ad pg. 19

Dr Block’s Tips:At the Block Center, a key

component of our integrative program is anti-cancer, or “Life Over Cancer,” nutri-

tion. Though each treatment plan is tailored to the needs

of each patient, nutrition plays a key role whether a

patient is fighting metastatic disease, wanting to prevent a recurrence, or is interest-ed in disease prevention. We strongly recommend

patients eliminate red meat and get their protein from plant-based sources such as lentils, chickpeas, tofu,

tempeh, veggie burgers and wheat-gluten products such as seitan. However, if some-one is going to eat red meat, we suggest limiting portion size. 3 ounces is considered one serving (about the size of a deck of cards). Look for lean, grass-fed organic sources of animal protein. Better substitutes for red meat might include: lean

wild game such as venison, ostrich and buffalo, turkey burgers, eggs fortified with omega-3, and, the very best

animal food choice, cold water omega-3 rich fish.

He tried the convention-al medicine approach and his condition was only getting worse. Eventually, his doctor told him that he wanted to put him on a drug to suppress his immune system and was told, that, “the drug will suppress your immune system so much that if you get a common cold, it could KILL you.” Dr. Ungar started researching for a safe and natural solution. Many years of research, education and certifications later, Dr. Ungar cured himself and learned how to treat many other conditions naturally.

The Gastrointestinal System Really The Cause For Most Conditions? Look First At The Kidney It is commonly believed that the gastrointestinal system is generally the source of many conditions, anything from common cold to cancer. Contrary to popular belief, I believe far more often than not, the true origin may be the kidney. In Anthroposophical medicine, the kidney is the first organ system to develop and mature from preconception to about age two. If there is a trauma of any kind: physical, emotional or energetic at this time of life, this system then is not able to mature and grow as well as it could and the other systems to follow in growth and maturation namely, the gastrointestinal system at age 4-7, do not mature

as well either. Our bodies have an inherent self-healing process in which we can go on for years if not decades before we develop a sign or symptom. When we get a disease or condition, we tend to think more often than not that the problem recently happened. However, taking a look back at how the organ systems developed and under what conditions really tells us the story of what our body is trying to convey through its sign, symptom and condition. Finding the cause(s), which can originate on many levels, is absolutely important to truly understand and treat the cause(s). Looking at what is going on in the moment and in the past but also looking at how you were brought into the world, mom’s pregnancy, how you grew up, what happened, what didn’t happen, how you responded to stressors, how you manifested situations, etc., is of the utmost importance in figuring out why you got whatever condition. Understanding organ development and how the growth and maturation of organs have an impact on health and wellness throughout your life is paramount. Dr. Smith Brustoski, ND earned her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington and is a contributing author of the “Foundations of Naturo-pathic Medicine”, the soon-to-be-published textbook on the philosophy, theory and principles of Naturopathic Medicine. http://naturecurehealthandwellness.com/ 440-247-4507

VitaClay: A nourishing tradition that doctors recommend2014 is abuzz with the idea of turning your kitchen into an apothecary. The alchemistic bone broths, herbed meats, medicinal teas, longevity elixirs and heart strengthening rice and whole grain porridges that bubbled from un-glazed clay pots for centuries have captured the imag-ination of chefs, foodie bloggers and health conscious home cooks. In photo: founder Michelle Liu

Essenergy’s VitaClay Smart Organic Multi-Cooker is riding the growing wave of interest in these ancient culinary healing arts with an ultra- modernized un-

glazed clay pot cooking system. Unglazed clay a top green choice because it is fast, easy to prepare elegant meals for one or many. In a recent interview with Essenergy’s Michelle Liu, we learned why it was a banner year for her unique invention.

Q: Why is unglazed clay so important to bring into a ‘green’ kitchen?ML: Unglazed clay-pot cooking has been tempting the taste buds and enhancing the health of ancient civilizations for centuries. When I discovered rich intense flavors and unparalleled health benefits by preparing fresh food in unglazed clay cookware, I created the VitaClay pot. My intention was to bring the superior results of clay cooking into my kitchen for fast and easy family meals.

Q: Something special happens to ingredients cooked in clay. Can you tell us why? ML: It’s really about synergy and integration. Healthy foods react positively together when heated inside unglazed clay. The ancients knew how low heat and clay created a delicate and evenly cooking environment that optimized the nutri-tional profile of their meals and made them richer, tastier and healthier. This is be-cause clay neutralizes acidity and unlocks nature’s gifts in the food such as salts, vitamins, minerals and natural sugars. Another big plus is that fats and meat juices are preserved when steamed at low temperatures and remain nourishing, bioavail-able and digestible. The smell molecules also remain intact with our special seal, waking up your digestive powers and satisfying your appetite.

Q: How easy is it to use the VitaClay? ML: It’s so simple because it’s a techno-logical breakthrough and fully programmed for soups, stews, varietal rice, whole grains and low-temperature yogurt. Any healthy cook really does become a culi-nary genius because all it takes is good quality ingredients and pushing a button.

Q? The VItaClay is gaining a reputation with Doctors. Why? ML: Ancient cul-tures knew food preparation to be both an art and a science. People discovered that foods and herbs when prepared or combined in non-toxic and non-reactive vessels, especially clay was vital to their survival and growth. Many doctors today use our products because they see great results from steaming and boiling plus there is the added benefit that clay offers. I think this makes the doctors look so young and stay slim. When your body is getting the proper fuel most food cravings disappear along with overeating in search of nu-trients. There is no better time to take a fresh look at your investment strat-egies than the beginning of the new year. And while there is no one-size-fits-all approach to investing for the future, reviewing your goals annually can help you stay on track from month to month--and year to year. Progress Check: The goal of an investment review is to make sure you’re in position to pursue important short- and long-term goals during the coming year. However, it is difficult to get a clear vision of the future

without first reviewing whether you have managed to stay on track during the past year.

For example, ask yourself the following questions: • Are your savings and investing goals still realistic, or might you now need to accumulate more (or less) money than origi-

nally planned? • Has the time frame for any of your financial goals--such as your retirement date--changed in the past year? • Have you been contributing as much as

possible to your tax-deferred retirement accounts? The 2013 and 2014 contribution limits are $17,500 for employer-sponsored retirement accounts, such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s, plus another $5,500 in catch-up contributions if you are over the age of 50. For traditional and

Roth IRAs, the limits are $5,500 with another $1,000 in catch-up contributions.

Correcting for Asset Allocation “Drift” You should also be aware that your asset mix, or asset allocation, is always subject to change.1 That’s because investment performance could cause the value of some of your assets to rise (or fall) more than others. When an asset allocation shifts due to market performance, it is said to have “drifted” or become unbalanced. How you go about rebalancing will depend on your particular circumstances. If you are mak-ing regular contributions to a retirement plan, the easiest way to adjust the makeup of your contributions is to build up underweighted assets. This avoids transaction costs and does not require liquidating and reinvesting assets, which can have tax consequences. In general, it’s a good idea to avoid liquidating existing assets unless the tax consequences work in your favor. If you must rebalance assets outside of your retirement plan, try to do it in another tax-de-ferred account such as an IRA, again to avoid immediate tax consequences. And if you’re looking for new money to help rebalance your portfolio, consider using a lump-sum payment such as a bonus or tax refund. To better appreciate how performance differences can affect a portfolio over time, consider what might have happened to a hypothetical portfolio of 70% U.S. stocks, 10% bonds, 10% foreign stocks and 10% cash equivalents if left untouched for the 20-year period ended December 31, 2012. In this example, the original 70% allocation to domestic stocks would have grown to 79.4%, while all the other allocations would have shrunk, reducing their intended risk reduc-tion role in the portfolio. As always, past performance is no guarantee of future results.2Bonds haven’t been as volatile as stocks over long periods of time, but recent history shows that they too can experience performance patterns that may alter asset allocation over time. Consider the divergence of the stock and bond markets in 2008 and how that affected asset al-locations. While the S&P 500 lost 37% during this period, long-term U.S. government bonds gained 23%. A portfolio composed of 50% of each at the start of the year would have shifted to an allocation of 34% stocks and 66% bonds at year’s end.3 Seeing the Whole Picture: If you have multiple investment accounts, determining whether to rebalance may involve several steps, beginning with a check of your overall allo-cation.4 This entails figuring how your money is divided among asset classes in each account and then across all accounts, whether in taxable brokerage, mutual fund or tax-deferred ac-counts. How often should you rebalance, and what are some general guidelines? The usual answer is anytime your goals change; otherwise, at least once a year. However, to keep close tabs on your investment plan and make sure it doesn’t drift far from your objectives, you may prefer to set a percentage limit of variance, say 5% on either side of your intended target that would trigger a review and possible rebalancing. 1Asset allocation does not assure a profit or protect against a loss. 2Source: Wealth Management Systems Inc. The performance shown is for illustrative purposes only and is not indicative of the performance of any specific investment. The hypothetical returns used do not reflect the deduction of fees and charges inherent to investing. Your results will vary. Example is for the 20 years ended December 31, 2012. Domestic stocks are represented by the total returns of Standard & Poor’s Composite Index of 500 stocks, an unmanaged index that is generally considered repre-sentative of the U.S. stock market. Bonds are represented by the total returns of the Barclays Aggregate Bond index. Money markets are represented by the total returns of the Barclays 3-Month Treasury Bills index. Non-U.S. stocks are represented by the total returns of the Morgan Stanley Capital International Europe, Australasia, Far East (EAFE®) index. It is not possible to invest directly in an index. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Investing in stocks involves risks, including loss of principal. Bonds are subject to market and interest rate risk if sold prior to maturity. Bond values will decline as interest rates rise and are subject to availability and change in price. Foreign investments involve greater risks than U.S. investments, including political and economic risks and the risk of cur-rency fluctuations, and may not be suitable for all investors. Treasury bills are guaranteed by the U.S. government as to the timely payment of principal and interest, and, if held to maturity, offer a fixed rate of return and fixed principal value. 3Source: Wealth Management Systems Inc. The performance shown is for illustrative purposes only and is not indicative of the performance of any specific investment. Your results will vary. Stocks are represented by the S&P 500, bonds by long-term U.S.

Choosing the “Best” Test Prep by Patricia Saddle, President of The College Planning Center Most students are anxious about taking college entrance exams. Taking a good test prep course or working one-on-one with a tutor can help alleviate some of this anxiety by allowing students to become familiar with the exams and test-taking strategies. Here are some questions to ask when looking for a test prep class: Who will be teaching the class? Some test prep companies use recent col-lege graduates who had high SAT/ACT scores when they took the exam in

high school. Be cautious if this is the case. There is a difference between scoring well on an exam and being able to teach others how to do well. Be sure to ask about the train-ing the instructors receive to help them become effective teachers, not just effec-tive test takers. The best programs either use experienced educators as instructors, or use educators for training instructors. What is the content of the class? Is time equally divided between the different sec-tions of the exams, or are whole sessions devoted to specific sections? Is more time spent on particular sections or particular skills development? Additionally, ask how many full-length practice exams, using real exams, will be given during the course; the more the better. Also ask how the practice exams are scored and shared with stu-dents. Do they get personal feed-back on their strengths and weaknesses? Of course, you should always consider how you learn best, and then look for programs that are a good match for your learning style. Some students will do best with pri-vate tutoring, while other students can do well in a group setting. What materials will be used in the class? The best test prep classes and test prep tutors will use actual SAT and/or ACT exams for practice rather than create their own exams. While many test prep companies use their own proprietary study books, they should also incorporate the Col-lege Board’s and the ACT’s own study guides into the classroom. What is the class size? Look for smaller groups, and be sure to ask how much time is allocated in each class session to an-swering individual questions. What is the refund policy? If your child thinks the course isn’t helping after a ses-sion or two, can you get a refund? What happens if your child gets sick or has a scheduling conflict that requires dropping out of the course? Can you provide references? Checking references is especially important if you are considering hiring a private tutor. However, keep in mind that what works well for one student isn’t necessarily the best fit for all students. When checking references, be sure to dig deeper in your questions to try to get a sense of the tutor’s style, approach, and ability to adapt to your child’s needs. What is the tutor’s or prep class success rate? Use caution here. If a class or tutor suggests that all students who take the course will raise their SAT scores by 100 or 200 points, it should set off warning bells. Students in any class will learn and improve at their own rates; it is very rare to see the same increases across the board for all stu-dents. Similarly, don’t be overly impressed by promises that your son or daughter can retake the prep class for free if their scores don’t increase. You want a course that helps the first time. A good question to ask of courses or tutors who make this promise is “what percentage of students retake the course because they didn’t get the scores they hoped for after the class or working with the tutor?” Listen to the answer care-fully. Sometimes what seems like a posi-tive, isn’t. A high percent-age of repeats is not necessarily a good thing; you want a class that is likely to help the first time you take it. Music NotesFollow Your Dreams: A Violinist Quest for a Healthier Life By Myles A. Smith (Humble G tha Fiddla) During my years as a teenager I grew up over-weight, quiet, shy and awk-

w a r d . At one point I weighed over 300 pounds . I would o f t e n r e t r e a t from so-

cial settings so that I would not have to deal with the shame and hate. The bully-ing and constant harassment did not add to my own per-sonal self-confidence. Mu-sic helped me to find peace of mind. I started to play the violin to uplift my spirit and give me a healthier outlook on life. My violin perfor-mances have been for Pres-ident Barack Obama, at the U.S. Tennis Open, Schools and numerous venues. Tera Buerkle with the U.S. Ten-nis Open stated, “Humble G wowed the U.S. Open audi-ences.” I am inspired to bring more “Hip Hope” into the industry. I had to prac-tice a healthier lifestyle, lose weight and take con-trol of my future in order to be a top performer in the world. I changed my diet and I started to working out everyday. Despite all obsta-cles I will achieve my goals in music and life. It all starts with playing sweet music on the strings of a healthy spir-it, mind and body. Local Gold Medalist Nurse runs first ever 24 hours shift to draw attention

Stella cheers attendees at the National Caring 4 The Caregiver Week kick off event.

that caregiving is a 24 hours responsibility…………Caregiver’s Cliff Notes offers a road map to what 76 million baby boomers need to know about finding quality care outside of a nursing home! Debbie turned the ringing alarm off. It was 6:00AM and time to get herself ready for the day. Her son would be there soon to help her shower and dress her husband Jim. Her son came every day before work to help because Debbie, at 75 years old and suffering with arthritis, could not lift Jim out of bed or help him to the shower. This has been the daily routine since Jim’s stroke 3 years ago. When her son leaves for work, Debbie spends the day caring for Jim’s needs. At the end of the day, the son re-turns and they do it all over again, this time getting Jim ready for bed. Debbie is one of the 65 million unpaid family care-givers in America today who provide over $450 billion worth of care. Current research shows that the family CAREGIV-ER like Debbie DIES either BEFORE or SHORTLY after the person they are caring for due to the stress associated with caregiving.

On the the heels of AARP’s report that suicide rates have surge amongst baby boomers because of the stress of caring

for their aging loved ones, Stella Nsong President of the CAREgiving Institute (a 501 c 3 organization on Ohio) stepped up for CAREGIVERS by creating The National

Caring 4 The Caregiver week. The goal of this holiday is two fold: first to raise awareness of that fact that caregiving is the new silent killer of people, relationships and careers and secondly to encourage family caregivers to take time for selfcare and stress management

so that they do not die early.

She kicked off this special movement by working the first ever 24 hour shift to draw attention to the fact that caregiving is a 24 hour responsibility. Yes, she worked 24 hours straight during which she was interviewed by both AM and FM radio stations across the country, she visited the elderly in the com-munity, worked with a hospice nurse in caring for a newly admitted hospice patient, helped a local geriatrician find 24 hours care for a patient, she visited a nursing home inside of a convent to help deliver medical supplies to the nuns who live there, she held a caregiver coaching session which ended with some stress relief and relaxation for the attendees. 20 hours into her caregiving feat, she counselled a caregiver in Italy on the oncology unit at Nova hospital via telephone. CAREGIVING TODAY IS LIKE SMOKING 20 years ago. 20 years ago people smoked not knowing that it could shorten their lives and today, caregiving is the greatest act of love but it could kill you in a few years unless you plan for care and you take time to care for yourself daily. To raise funds for the caregiver programs at the CAREgiving Institute, Stella Nsong authored the book called The Caregiver’s Cliff Notes: 27 Things To Do When Your Parents are Losing Their Independence. The Caregiver’s Cliff Notes is succinct, con-cise and to the point with simple and actionable steps to help caregivers prepare both legally, financially and emotionally for their roles as caregivers. Chapter 2 covers the role of a care manager: What To Do When Everything Has Hit The Fan. A care manger can serve as a liaison between the facility, the family and the legal system to explore solutions for the discharge planning process. Chapter 5 discusses 5 things to do when your parents are resis-tant to care. Chapter 7 details how to delay or avoid nursing home placement and chapter 9 walks you through the process of determining the amount and level of care needed in an assist-ed living and how to choose the right facility for your loved one. Chapter 10 helps everyone put their own individual long term care plan into place. At the end of each chapter there is a check list and by the time the caregiver gets to the end of the book and has checked all the boxes, he/she will have everything needed to provide a good quality of life and safe care for a loved one. The Caregiver’s Cliff Notes is an easy read in 2-4 hours. It is available in paperback at local book stores nationwide. It is available on amazon and in book stores nationwide. Founder: Dr. Alale herself suffered from chest pain, rapid heart rate, breast tumors, sleep apnea, insomnia, gastric refl ux, lymph edema, and alterations of the alpha brain wave. It was the compassion of a Russian physician that she met at a medical conference in Canada who educated her about electromagnetic toxicity. Overlooked ElectromagnicToxins Sparks Dr. Rhoda ZioneAlale, RN, PhD, DHP to Invent an Amazing Award Winning DiscoveryDr. Rhoda Zione Alale is a Distinguished Fellow in resident at The Center for Equity in Health at Teachers College, Colum-bia University in New York City. The Genesis of her mission stems from a “sick home.” She moved her family from Wash-ington, DC to Ohio, after her husband died, and unknowingly brought a home that was built on nuclear waste and full of chemical and radiation toxins. It made her whole family sick. Her son, Prince Kahlif, lost over 60% of his brain theta wave and altered his behavior so that he became as a 7 yo child who was stuck in manic aggres-sion and rage. He had to be hospitalized for almost a year. She

too suffered from chest pain, rapid heart rate, breast cancer, sleep apnea, insomnia, gastric refl ux, lymph ede-ma, and alterations of the alpha brain wave which led to memory loss. It was the compassion of a Russian Doctor that she met at a medical con-ference in Canada who was merciful to speak to her about being toxic with

electromagnetic radiation. She noted that Dr. Alale’s hands, feet, face and legs were swollen. She ask her …if she had ants… in her home? Dr. Alale replied, “Yes, a huge ant infestation in fact!” The doctor then explained that ants only infest homes with high levels of static electromagnetic radiation that can be highly assaultive and cause cancer in humans and animals. The Doctor offered to give Dr. Alale an evaluation for EMF (electro-magnetic frequency) radiation poisoning. She accepted it. The fi ndings confi rmed her observations of Dr. Rhoda Zione Alale was indeed sick with EMF radiation poisoning. The doctor then advised her to get an engineer to evaluate her home. Those fi ndings revealed that the home was full of converging toxins with both chemical and letal levels of environmental radi-ation. In 2007, she gave that home to The MiChi Health EpiCenter, an environment research organization. She invited engineers to study that home from around the world. She also and began to develop and investigate the interfacing of nano technologies that would lower radiation and chemical assault in indoor environments. Dr. Rhoda Zione Alale, now a Diplomate of Health Physics, measures and analysis, ionizing and non-ion-izing radiation, greenhouse gas, particular matter, and industrial chemicals and their impact on cell function and health. As a Fellow at The Center for Equity in Health, she directs The ECO 180 Healthy SMART Homes National Cam-paign to education consumers on the dangers of indoor toxins and directs Construction Firms, globally and Engineers on HOW to use her revolutionary Award Winning technologies: NanoBioGenic ( The Flat Batteries) and NanoBioPlex ( Nano Insulators and Water Energetic Systems) to reduce the assault of chemicals and environmental radiation and to convert “old” homes to energy effi cient, toxin free or reduced, SMART Homes for about $1per sq ft and up. Additionally, she teaches consum-ers HOW to retrofi t cell phones and other electronic devices with her amazing Flat Battery nano technologies to lower the assault. These technologies are so diversed in use. A mother in Cincin-nati discovered that they stop her 8 yo daughter’s seizures on contact. She is now supporting her daughter’s doctors at The Cleveland Clinic in a quest to fund clincial trials and commer-cialization of the Flat Batteries, globally. Liposomal Complex AX Imagine taking all of the aforementioned features and benefi ts of Liposomal Glu-tathione, Resveratrol, Curcumin, Co Q10 and Vitamin C, and blending them together in a propriety formula that delivers all of those benefi ts in a single product. That is exactly what we have done with our Liposomal Complex AX. It’s like having a powerhouse of natural benefi ts in a single supplement! LI-POSOMES: A CLOSER LOOK Scientists sometimes refer to liposomal agents as nanoliposomals because they are so small that they must be measured in nanometers. A nanometer (nm) is a unit of measurement that is equal to one millionth of a millimeter. Discovered in 1961 by Dr. Alec Bangham, a British hematologist who was studying phospholipids at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, liposomes have paved the way for many advancements in biochemistry and medicine. Utilizing liposomes for cellular delivery of nutrients, howev-er, is a relatively recent development. 8oz. bottle/liquid. www.worldschoiceproducts.com use code 010010 for savings at checkout.

Lymph System ...Key to Health? by Wil-liam Brown, Ph.D. LMT. To say that manual lymph merely works on the sur-face while other systems of lymph go deeper “to break up proteins” is to reveal a serious lack of knowledge about the physiology of the body and how the lymphat-ic system works. Manual lymph drainage/massge is a massage of the skin, not the muscles. It works on the surface because 50% of all lymph vessels, nodes, and pathways in the body are directly under the sur-face of the skin. What hap-pens when you move 50% of all the lymphatic fl uid in the body? The other half of the deeper lymphatics move in direct proportions because as a fl uid medium it is all cor-rected! What are the origins of lymphatic scalar wave re-search? In the mid 1930s a machine was created by Nikola Tesla and George Larahavsry to treat cancer. Dr. Eryle (the founder of the CC) wrote in Lakahavs-ry’s book that the treatment was effective. Ultimately all health care and medical protocols impact the immune system. The lymphatic sys-tem is the immune system. The lymphatic scalar wave experimental research proj-ect is frequency modulation on the stimulation on the lymphatic system, combined with a predicated on the ac-celeration of the lymph fl ow through the application of

BRAIN FOG, FROM ALZHEIMER’S TO AUTISMTerry Chappell, MD. /Celebration of Health Association /Bluffton, Ohio. 419-358-4627 /www.healthcelebration.com Memory loss and inability to think clearly are common complaints, especially co-existing with fatigue. Usually they are associated with toxicity (especially lead, mercury and alu-minum), yeast imbalance, or food and chemical sensitivities. These are all easily detected through testing, but frequently the tests are not performed and the patient’s complaint is in-adequately treated. Proper treatment can be highly effective, if done comprehensively. Chelating agents, anti-fungals, pro-biotics, special diet and desensitization are common therapies that must be offered. After a few months of these plus good nutritional supplements, and sometimes much sooner, major

changes might be detected by the patient. Autism therapy is guided by the Defeat Autism Now protocol that is available else-where on the internet. Some of the common additional treatments include methylcobalamin (B12 shots), a grain-free and milk-free diet, homeopathics, amino acids orally or by shot and hyperbaric oxygen. Alzheimer’s, Parkinsonism, and Multiple Sclerosis might be treated effectively by balancing neurotransmitters and improving cell membrane receptor sites. Intravenous glu-tathione given in high doses at home can be helpful. Oxidative scavengers are useful. High doses of CoEnzyme Q10 and vitamin E might help, as can low doses of Naltrexone, which is a medicine that us approved for narcotic overdoses. Intravenous phosphatidyl choline can be useful, as can very high doses of B12 intravenously and vitamin C. The latter formula is particularly helpful for various neuropathies, including diabetic neuropathy. Helpful oral preparations include niacinamide, Lipothiamin, cholin, and apoaequorin. A brain that is not functioning well often needs a comprehensive approach that is individualized. There are many potential causes and there are many solutions, some of which must be given together. Promote new cell growthNew cell growth is an essential part of life—it’s how we grow

from child to adult. But as we age and our growing decelerates, so does the produc-tion of new cells. At the same time, our body’s cells them-selves age and their functions begin to slow. When it comes to your skin, this can lead to a dull, sagging complexion on the outside and cells that can’t effi ciently accept nutrients and remove toxins on the inside.

Part of Y.E.S.The Jeunesse Youth Enhancement System uses DNA repair and antioxidant ingredients to improve cell performance and longevity. Our patent-pending Stem Cell Innovation helps gen-erate new, vital skin cells in the fi rst place.

The science of stem cellsDr. Nathan Newman, a world-renowned dermatologist and cos-metic surgeon, began searching for a topical treatment to help patients recovering from burns and severe injuries. Knowing that stem cells drive cell growth and regeneration, he isolated the stem cell growth factors that serve as the “language” com-municating cellular activity. Although other scientists were using plant-based growth factors, Dr. Newman derived his growth factors from the stem cells of healthy adults, theorizing that cell communication in the same “language” would be more effective.

The power behind LUMINESCE™The results were remarkable. And his 200+ growth factor com-plex is what you’ll experience in LUMINESCE™ products from Jeunesse. This potent growth factor complex is able to rejuve-nate skin cells faster and at a molecular level. New cell produc-tion is stimulated, resulting in increased collagen and elastin for fi rmer skin tone. New cells also give your complexion a fuller appearance with a healthy, vibrant glow. With LUMINESCE™, skin appears younger, because at the cellular level, it literally is younger. With approximately two out of three adults, or 66% of adults in the U.S. overweight, it’s probably a good idea for most people to cut out noodles and pasta from their diet. But with Miracle Noodle, everybody can indulge in an all-you-can-eat noodle buffet. Miracle Noodle is shaped from the root of a Jap-anese yam plant. The fiber and flour from the root contains just a few calories at most. In fact, most

of Miracle Noodle’s products contain zero-net calories, meaning that whatever tiny amount of calories in the noodles are negated by the fiber. These noodles, which look and feel very similar to high-calorie regular pasta, are tru-ly a miracle for those that need to monitor blood-sugar levels and keep their weight in check. Miracle Noodle is also ideal for anybody who is on a low-carb or “Paleo” diet. Many bodybuilders are also Miracle Noodle loyal customers. Our noodles are 96% water and 4% fiber. Remarkably, when combined with some of your favorite sauces, spices and herbs, Miracle Noodles taste like regular pasta. On top of that, preparing Miracle Noodle takes much less time than traditional noodles. You simply drain the noodles, rinse them for 30-60 seconds and lightly boil for a couple minutes. Miracle Noodle was started in 2006 by Dr. Jonathan Carp, a holistic dermatologist with a passion for nutrition. Dr. Carp had visited Japan, where he was introduced to the vegetable flour noodles, which in Japan, are called ‘shirataki’. Dr. Carp went crazy for shirataki and decided to bring them to the U.S. market. Today, Miracle Noodle is also available in over 20 countries. Look for it, too, at your local natural health food store or supermarket.

Healthy Referral Newspaper Winter/Spring 2014 p.15

The Balancing Act, Finding and Cultivating Your True God Self Through Mind, Body & Spirit Thank you for allowing me to share with you my knowledge and an empowering way of life. I am

Jerome Younger, most know me intimately by my spiritual name, Maa Mekhanu. This spiritual name was given to me by my ancestors during my studies if Kemetic Priesthood. This divination allows God to work in me and through me to heal and restore balance to others as they strive to revive the God within. My intent and purpose is to partner with oth-ers to help optimize life forces, health, wellness, and heal-ing. My goal to creatively assist individuals in reconnecting to their original purpose of greatness, lifes purpose and divinity using the mind, body and spirit blueprint for a state of con-stant peace, healing and health while tapping into the spirit realm to raise the elemental level of spirit consciousness, similar to that of the ancestors to facilitate global healing of the personal self. The fundamental principles governing my

Ausarian religion is the reality that man is made in the likeness of God, meaning that God’s traits reside in man as his/her essential qualities. The study of Kemetics is the spiritual way of life taught under the Ausarian Religion. It is important to focus completely on God’s traits in man to comprehend the entire psycho-logical, and social structure of the Ausarian religion through Kemetic practices. The ancient ways of the Kemetic people can properly teach all individuals how to be-come truly humane by purifying life. By purification of mind, body, and spirit we grow closer to the divine self that exists in all. In striving to attain purification, wholeness and oneness with the divine or God self, three distinct phases must be the primary focus, these 3 phases or attributes are the physical, mental and spiritual being. Simply put, the Ausarian religion is a set of teachings, observances, and practices to guide people to achieve a totally successful life, through realizing God within. I incorporate the fundamental premises and principles received through spiritual an-cestors to activate the transmutational process for individual and planetary transformation and healing. Understanding that the human being is a complete entity comprised of body, mind and spirit one must realize that rebalancing these elements can assist in achieving health, harmony, wellness, vitality and prevent future “dis-ease”. Therefore, I provide non-invasive services using the natural elements of earth, air, fire, water and spirit methods as my ancestors used, to assist with healing and “energy” work by freeing the body of toxins to allow it to function optimally through purification and rejuvenation of the body temple or physical vessel occupied by our spirit beings. I am blessed through my teachings with the knowledge that I am aware of the One/All creator, about true holistic living and natural healing, and about respect for elders, nature and community. I am truly blessed that my state of consciousness has soared as I journey on to uproot and purge out the deteriorated parts of self and continue to elevate my conscious God self through my spiritual and cultural journeys to allow me elevate others towards a more spiritually centered lifestyle! What Matthew loves most in life is holding safe space for others, whether it’s through his music, consulting, entertaining, or simply serving some of the many Chinese teas he has acquired and shared with people all over the world. For this particular project, “Solo Electric Cello”, Matthew plays his electric cello through a complex process of live loop-ing. Common adjectives used to describe how people feel after hearing his music include “Opened”, “Beautifully Vulnerable”, “Inspired”, and “Mesmerized”. The Tribe of Bliss-By Emily Hellesen, Chief of Tribe, Bliss Health and Healing Center- We fail in isolation, but we succeed in families, groups, teams and tribes. This idea – my belief - was an essential reason why I created Bliss Health and Healing Center in Cleve-land, Ohio. After 20 years in corporate America, I was comfortable in the practice of business – setting a vision, documenting quantifiable goals, calculating a budget, marketing to se-

nior executives, and managing the project to completion. But when I left that world to become a medical massage therapist in private practice, I was surprised how many peers – therapists, practitioners and fitness trainers – had no business acumen. They were certified, skilled, and even gifted healers; but lacking business know-how. I created Bliss to give them a place to practice within the construct of a wellness center. I handle business cards, wifi, scheduling, merchant services, website design, social media outlets, physical space, a col-lection of like-minded practitioners and ritual gatherings to foster a community of healers who then can serve the larger community. We are a dynamic group of practitioners providing health services and healing experiences. We are the Tribe of Bliss. BlissHHC.com

Inspiration for the Year Ahead...Fall is here… and like the countless colorful leaves on the trees, we once again discover a vast variety of calendars from which to make our choices. Popular not only for personal enjoy-ment and planning, calendars also rank high on the list of reasonably priced gifts that bright-

en the receiver’s life all year.

Stepping out from the crowd of inspirational desk calendars, the award-win-ning Inner Reflections Engagement Calendar offers an irresist-ible array of stunning nature photography . . . Mountain meadows at dawn, the sur-realistic colors of a delicate blue poppy, a gently cascad-ing stream in a quiet forest, the impossibly elegant poise of a butterfly amidst a swirl of white seed pods, cute little furry creatures of the wild, and

awesome feathered friends in flight. All this, and more.

The dazzling images alone would make this calendar a wonderful gift! However, the publish-er has taken it one step further by perfectly matching the photos with beautifully expressed insights from the writings of Paramahansa Yogananda – author of the spiritual classic Auto-biography of a Yogi – transforming this calendar into a delight for the soul as well as the eyes.

“The brilliant images and powerful quotes in the Inner Reflections calendar are an amaz-ing reminder of our place in the universe . . . boosts our confidence in the pursuit of why we are here and making the world a better place.” ~Thomas Katovsky, copub, Healthy Referral Newspaper see ad. p 17

ChattaMusic -co-owner Dennis Massengale, along with his wife, Karen, started on a new quest for a healthier lifestyle early this year. Karen discovered Advocare Products and went on a 24 Day Challenge to start losing the almost 50 pounds she had gained since the loss of her parents 3 years ago. With the supplements (and exercise!), she lost about 10 pounds and a LOT of inches in that initial period! Dennis came on board, not being comfortable car-rying the 202 pounds on his 5” 10” frame. Since then, the couple has a combined loss of 50 pounds, and they FEEL better! Becoming healthier was important, as running a music store and recording studio is time consuming! ChattaMusic is in its 5th year of operation, having expanded into a building that is three times the original space. They carry guitars, with a big emphasis on VINTAGE, and many other stringed instruments. From banjos to mandolins to violins, the knowledgeable staff at ChattaMusic is prepared to help the customer find the right instrument for his or her individual needs! The hours are long, and the tough economy has presented challenges (especially the last year), so staying focused and maintaining energy is important! “The fresh ground coffee that we serve all day is helpful, but eating right and taking the right supplements are the keys to coping!”, says Dennis. Stephen Holt, M.D., ON: THE ANTI-AGING TRIAD$89.95 Book Reviewed by Dorothy Ledden Described by Professor Michael Klentze(President, European Society of Anti-Aging), as the world leader in longevity medicine, Dr. Holt takes us into a new dimension of combined anti-aging strategies that he believes will drive the practice of life extension medicine in the years to come. There is a revolution in modern healthcare which is emerging to serve the rapidly expanding population of the elderly in industrialized nations. Coincidental with this revolution

is the wide-spread quest for longevity, resulting in a major change in treatment paradigms. In his g r o u n d -b r e a k i n g book, Holt On: The An-ti-Aging Tri-ad, Stephen Holt, MD, world re-nowned phy-sician and author of the recently re-leased book,

Holt On: The HCG Diet Revolution - The Definitive Guide (www.hcgclinician.com), ex-plores three areas of modern biotechnology research which will shape the future of anti-aging medicine in the next two decades. These three areas: telomeres, calorie restriction, and stem cell treatments, are collectively referred to the anti-aging triad. Dr. Holt proposes this “triad” of treatment is essential to the future of anti-aging med-icine. These proposals will ultimately overshadow current anti-aging initiatives such as hor-mone replacement therapies or standard esthetic interventions. In the last twenty years, there has been extensive scientific research regarding the importance of telomere shortening as a biomarker of aging and an endorsement of the role of calorie restriction in the enhancement of average and maximum lifespan; while stem cell sciences are emerging with promise for the management of chronic disease, new methods for organ production, and specific actions on longevity promotion. As a pioneer in anti-aging medicine, Dr. Holt examines the real evidence base of longevity interventions and the profound effect this research will have on the promotion of a long, vital, and healthy life. www.antiagingtriad.com

The spirit of the drum-Baba Jubal Harris Master Teaching Artist Rhythm and vibration are ubiquitous .Everything in existence is moving to a vibration and creating an infinity of waves in motion. The power behind the sound we hear when playing drums is the Spirit of the drummer. The drum is nothing but an object until it is played by the drummer. The drum is a medium that communicates the language of the drummer and evokes intense feeling and emotion . The drum can serve as a tool for mental physical and spiritual alignment with the essence of joy within the human heart center. The spirit of joy is called by the drum from the depth of our being. When the vibration of joy is called from within us we feel like dancing to the music of the drum. The spirt of the drum is a bridge between the physical mental emotional

and spiritual dimensions of ourself. In order to call joyous multidimensional forces of creation a drummer must have a balanced spirt and know how to feel connected to the Source of life that exist beyond the ego. There exist high spirits and low spirits. Spirits that ascend and de-scend, good vibes and bad vibes. The drummer must develop the skill to elevate bad to good and good to the highest good so that everyone feels like dancing for joy. Tavis-SmileyFrom his celebrated conversations with world figures to his work to inspire the next generation of lead-ers, Tavis Smiley — broadcaster, author, publisher, advocate, and philanthropist — has emerged as an outstanding voice for change. Smiley is currently the host of the late-night television talk show Tavis Smiley on PBS, as well as The Tavis Smiley Show from Public Radio International (PRI), and the daily on-line radio program, Tavis Talks, on the Tavis Smiley Network (TSN) on BlogTalk Radio. In addition to his radio and television work, Smiley has

written 16 books. His memoir, What I Know for Sure: My Story of Growing Up in America, became a New York Times best seller, and the book he edited, Covenant with Black America, became the first nonfiction book by a Black-owned publisher to reach #1 on The New York Times best-sellers list. In his latest New York Times best seller, TheRich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto, Smiley and his co-author Dr. Cornel West challenge all Americans to re-examine their assumptions about poverty in America — what it really is and how to eradi-cate it. His forthcoming text to be published in September 2014 is Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Year. Smiley’s most gratifying accomplishments are rooted in his passion to inspire the next generation of leaders. The nonprofit Tavis Smiley Foundation has provided leadership training and development for America’s youth. Since its inception, more than 6,500 young people have participated in the foundation’s Youth to Leaders training workshops and confer-ences. The Foundation recently announced a $3 million four-year campaign called ENDING POVERTY: America’s Silent Spaces to alleviate endemic poverty in America. www.ciweb.org

cont. from pg. 11 Dr Brown lymphatic massage. There are many massage techniques that are combined with the words “lymphatic massage” for mass appeal. “Oriental lymphatic drainage”, “Reiki Lymphatics”, and “Swedish Lym-phatic Massage” are just a few. This marketing technique is creating confusion in the profes-sional community and distrust from the public. Lymphatic massage is in no way connected to Asia or Sweden. The true origin of lymphatic massage is Egyptian. Imhotep incorporated this gentle massage in Egypt before the more aggressive Asian and Swedish techniques were discovered many years later. When correctly administered to the skin by a spiritually-minded therapist, body water is restructured by the “coaxing” of toxic waters to elimination from the body. Under no cir-cumstances is lymphatic to cause pain, fatigue, or discomfort in any creature to which it is correctly administered. Water is our common denominator. Our water ebbs and flows with the moon energy like the oceans. With this consciousness of our ebbing and flowing, we find ourselves living intu-itively rather than emotionally. We begin thinking and moving with our hearts instead of our minds. This is the philosophy of gentle lymphatic massage .

Local lighting company introducing Unibat mobile charger at Consumer

Electronic Show Las Vegas...More Power, Anytime, Anywhere

CLEVELAND, OH (Nov. 12, 2013) — As the act of recharging mobile devices takes its place among life’s daily necessities, UNIBAT, a startup venture based in the Cleveland suburb of Brooklyn, has come out with lipstick-sized mobile chargers that allow devices to be recharged while a person is away from home or office. UNIBAT will be showcas-ing its mobile charger, called the PowerShake 2600, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 7-10. UNIBAT mobile chargers can be used to recharge smartphones, tablets, eRead-ers, mp3 players, wireless Bluetooth headsets, and other USB-powered mobile devices,

and can be re-charged from any USB port. UNIBAT mobile chargers are guaranteed to provide 500 cycles of backup power. As the name implies, shaking is how one activates the 4-color LED power indicator. They use lithium ion batteries, and are free of lead and mercury, so are completely recyclable. Since March, UNIBAT mobile chargers have been sold at a kiosk at the Beachwood Mall. Justin Miller, Managing Director at UNIBAT’s parent company, CleanLife Ventures LLC, says the kiosk has helped them perfect the product. “We’ve listened very care-fully to the comments, impressions and concerns of shoppers and customers, and in turn we improved our technology and our color scheme to meet customer’s preferences,” Miller says. Because devices keep getting smaller and small-er, and therefore battery space is shrinking as well, Miller sees a big future for this product line. “Although people aren’t calling as often, they’re watching more videos and movies, plus texting and using apps. So the

demand for backup power will only continue to grow,” he says. The company has plans in the works for an iPhone 5-compatible mini-charger, with a launch date aimed for quarter one of 2014. UNIBAT is a division of CleanLife Ventures LLC, whose CLEANLIFE brand is a global-leader in LED lighting and power supply technologies for commercial, spe-cial application, and consumer markets. From Neil Barnard, MD. Physicians Council for Responsible Medicine Chicken Nuggets: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes -October 10, 2013 Physicians Committee’s Feces Warning Label USDAResearchers in Mississippi dissected chicken nuggets from two national fast-food chains and have come to some unappetizing—yet unsurpris-ing—conclusions. Chicken nuggets are a mixture of blood vessels, nerves, muscle, cartilage, fat, and pieces of bone. Dr. Richard D. deShazo, an author of the study, described a nugget by saying, “It is really a chicken by-product high in calories, salt, sugar, and fat that is a very unhealthy choice.” The Physicians

Committee recently petitioned the USDA to label chicken products and alert consumers about adulterants and likely contamination. The findings in The Five Worst Contaminants in Chicken show that there are additional health hazards hiding in chicken products like carcin-ogens and super bugs—chicken nuggets are certainly no exception. Whether or not nuggets are ground up chicken feet, brains, or muscle, they are high in saturated fat and cholesterol and are best avoided altogether.

Healthful Fish Is a Myth-August 13, 2013 Terri MacLeod of Access Hollywood and I recently discussed just how toxic fish can be. Since there are many myths about fish being healthful, I want to share Ms. Ma-cLeod’s column on bad fats and fish: Healthy Hollywood is still reeling over the idea that fish might not be the best thing for your diet. After years of eating and loving fish, I was in shock when vegan guru and author of “Power Foods For The Brain,” Dr. Neal Barnard, compared fish to a “low tar cigarette.” My love of fish just went up in smoke! Healthy Hollywood met up with Dr. Barnard at the “Nutrition and Brain” summit held recently in Washington, D.C. where I was having breakfast with him and chatting about my favorite subject - “healthy/healing” nutrition. Then, his head-spinning proclamation about fish suddenly capsized my appetite for all things from sea. “Many people have gotten the idea they should be eating fish and fish you could say maybe a better choice than beef. Fish is somewhat lower in fat, depending on how it’s prepared, and the fats are more of the goods fats, which are the omega-3’s, but and this is a big ‘BUT’…,” exclaimed Dr. Barnard. Dr. Barnard favors a vegan/plant-based diet in order to achieve optimal health and decrease one’s risk for dementia. But, even Dr. Oz, was shocked when Dr. Barnard declared fish a diet don’t on his show back in March 2013. “As

cont. from p. 19. Dr Barnardgroup, people who eat fish have more weight problems and have a higher risk of diabetes, compared with people who skip animal products altogether,” he declared to Healthy Holly-wood. In addition, all that hype about good fats in fish, like salmon, is another bot-tom-feeder, according to Dr. Barnard, who goes on to ex-plain that 40% of salmon is fat and that 70 to 80% of that fat is not good for us. “Most of the fat in fish is not ome-ga-3’s and it doesn’t do your body any good.” Or, does it do any good for your waistline. “Ev-ery gram of fat is 9 calories. And, you don’t have to do a lot of math before you real-ize I’m not going to lose any weight if I’m eating salmon. Doctors will say that’s the point, ‘it is fatty fish’ and you want the fish for the good fat, but what they’re not realiz-ing is only a tiny fraction of it is good fish. So, I wouldn’t go there,” explain Dr. Bar-nard. Besides, the bad fat, fish can also be toxic, with dangerous levels of mercury and other pollutants, adding, “Keep in mind where fish are from. They live in what has become a kind of human sewer – the oceans and wa-terways.” So, whether you take Dr. Barnard’s bait is up to you, but he insists it’s good to keep the dialogue going on our food system and keep in mind we are what we eat.
