MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPUPPER BRACKET LOWER BRACKET

Jim Lehman Jr. Jack Dressen Dominic Todora Don Constable

Two former Alexandriansto clash today

Deephaven’s Don Constable watched his approach shot from the 2nd fairway dropto within a few feet of the cup during his match with Mankato’s Geoff Klein.Constable sank that putt for birdie to take the hole.

Two former Alexandrians – JimLehman Jr. and Jack Dressen – arestill in the hunt for the ResortersMen’s Division trophy.

Lehman cruised to a 6-5 victorywhile Dressen won a 1-up dogfight.

They’ve both won big here before –Lehman is the division’s defendingchampion and Dressen hoisted theJunior Division title in 2004.

But after they duke it out in thismorning’s semifinals, the winner willstill face stiff competition – eitherDominic Todora of Woodbury or DonConstable of Deephaven.

Here’s a look at yesterday’s action:Lehman def. Bahe, 6-5

It just wasn’t Kyle Bahe’s day.The Annandale golfer couldn’t find

any of the birdie magic that’s neededto knock off a defending champion likeLehman.

Lehman, who now lives inPlymouth, won four holes on the front,Nos. 2, 5, 7 and 9 while Bah managedjust one win, a par on No. 9 so hetrailed by three at the turn.

After swapping pars on No. 10,Lehman went in for the kill, winningNo. 11 with birdie, No. 12 with aneagle and No. 13 with par, which gavehim a speedy 6-5 victory.

Dressen def. Strandemo, 1-upThe other match in the upper divi-

sion was another story.Sixteen-year-old Thomas Strande -

mo of Fargo, North Dakota gave JackDressen of Edina almost more than hecould handle.

Although Dressen took the first leadwith a birdie on No. 4, Strandemostormed back with wins on Nos. 5 and6 with par, birdie and tallied anotherbirdie win on the 9th hole to go 2-up atthe turn.

Dressen won No. 10 but fell backagain when Strandemo knocked in yetanother birdie on No. 11.

Dressen again narrowed the gap toone with a par win on No. 13 but couldonly tie Strandemo on the next threeholes.

Down by one with two holes left,Dressen needed a fast comeback andhe delivered, winning No. 17 withbirdie and then icing the match with abirdie on the final hole to win it, 1-up.

“I felt like I was down all day,”Dressen commented after the match.“Thomas is a great player and he hasa very bright future in front of him. Acouple of timely birdie putts on 17 and18 allowed me to escape with the W.”

Todora def. Robley, 2-1Alexandria’s Brian Robley battled

valiantly through 14 holes butDominic Todora saved his best stufffor last to pull off a 2-1 comeback.

The match was a close from the getgo. Robley won three holes on thefront, Nos. 2, 3 and 7, but Todora nul-lified that with wins on Nos. 1, 5 and 9to draw even at the turn.

Todora took his second lead of the

Today’s Women’sDivision championshipis shaping up to be adoozy.

Alexandria’s MaggieLeland, the defendingchampion and two-timetitle holder in this divi-sion, will face off againstneighboring golferSarah Roering ofGlenwood.

Roering, a two-timeState Class AA champi-on, is making her firstentry into this tourna-ment and is the onlygolfer to have defeatedLeland during highschool play this spring –that by only one stroke.

Leland, too, has statetournament accolades. She pounded her opposi-tion at the State Class

AAA tournament to cap-ture individual honorsin her third trip there, setting a state record inthe process as she card-ed a two day score of 143to break a mark thathad stood for 29 years.

Roering is a staterecord-holder as well. She and herMinnewaska teammatesbroke the record for themost state champi-onships when they wontheir fifth consecutivetitle this spring. Theyalso have the record forthe lowest team scoreever posted at state.Their five consecutivestate championships is

the third highest in thenation.

Both players will beheading for the collegecourses next year asLeland joins her sister,Molly, at AugustanaCollege and Roering willmeet up with her sister,Emily, at Colorado StateUniversity.

That should make forone of the most interest-ing, if not one of themost skilled, matches ofthe day.

So step up and watch, folks. Action will beginat 12:40 p.m. on the first

Alexandria’s Brian Robley, at left, watched his ball down the fairway on No. 4 after hesank a long putt from the back right side of the green on No. 3 to take the hole in hismatch against Woodbury’s Dominic Todora. Above, Amanda Woodhull of Minnetonkafound herself in a little trouble on the 1st hole yesterday afternoon as she was forcedto shoot her way out of the bunker.

Page 7: Resorters 080710

Leland def. Woodhull 5-4Leland’s match yesterday against

Amanda Woodhull of Minnetonka show-cased her ability to play consistent golf asshe used her talent for distance off the teeto her advantage.

Neither player stepped up early as theyshared the first three holes of play beforeLeland nabbed a pair of wins on a par anda birdie.

The two finished out the first half on aneven footing, leaving Leland up by two atthe turn.

Leland, who had just two bogeys on thefront nine, stayed where she needed to beon No. 10 winning with par, the samething she needed for wins on the next twoholes.

A not-so-stellar hole awaited both play-ers on No. 13, but Leland was able to edgeWoodhull to close out the match 5-4.

“My opponent 3-putted from three feetfor me to get to 5-4,” sad Leland. “I had abirdie at 12 to go 5-up, and was 2-up at theturn.”

Roering nips Aldrich 1-upRoering didn’t have quite as easy a time

of it in her match as she battled BetsyAldrich of St. Louis Park, a golfer with

three Resorters titles to her name. Both players scorched the course as

Roering notched three birdies and Aldrichtwo for the day.

Aldrich, a name very familiar to theResorters tournament, was the first togain a foothold as she picked up a win onNo. 2 with a par, but Roering knocked thematch back to even with her own par winon the next hole.

She then fired two of her birdies for theday – on Nos. 5 and 6 – giving her a 2-uplead heading onto the back nine.

The Glenwood golfer’s third birdie cameright away as they finished off No. 10, giv-ing Roering a 3-up lead, but Aldrich isnever through until the match is over.

She fired her first birdie on the nexthole, then added another birdie win on No.13 to even things up.

Both players shared the 14th holebefore Roering picked up a par win on No.15.

From there, the two golfers didn’t givean inch, playing the last three holes shot-for-shot to leave Roering up by one at thefinish and giving her a spot in today’sfinal.

THE ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Page 8: Resorters 080710

Will Jon Empanger ofChaska add a seventhResorters’ championshipto his trophy case?

Not if Greg Mattson ofBecker has anything tosay about it.

Both men advancedinto today’s final matchwith hard-fought winsyesterday. Empanger’smatch wasn’t decideduntil the 17th hole andMattson, who played 19holes on Thursday, hadto go the full 18 to beatGene Seashore ofLakewood Ranch,Florida in the semifi-nals.

Both finalists cardedan eagle yesterday onthe same hole, No. 12.

Empanger of Chaskais a five-time winner inthe Executive Divisionand won all the marblesin the Senior Men’sChampionship last year.

Here’s a recap of yes-terday’s action:

Empanger def.Blanchard, 2-1

Norty Blanchard ofBurnsville played nearflawless golf against thedefending champion.

He was even-par onthe front and managedto win two holes, No. 3with par and No. 8 withbirdie.

But Empangershowed why he has somuch trophy hardware. He also shot an even-paron the front and wontwo holes, Nos. 1 and 7with birdie, par.

After swapping parson No. 10, Blanchardgrabbed his first leadwith a birdie on No. 11.

Empanger bouncedright back with an eagleon the par-5 12th hole,u n d e r c u t t i n gBlanchard’s birdie.

Both golfers parredNo. 13 and stumbledwith bogeys on 14 beforeEmpanger made hismove. He won Nos. 15and 16 with back-to-back birdies to go 2-up.

On No. 17, Blanchardagain found out whathad been happening allday – pars are rarelygood enough to beatEmpanger. The 2009champ also made par to

seal a 2-1 win.Mattson def.

Seashore, 1-up

Things were lookingpretty good for GeneSeashore.

He won Nos. 2, 7 and 9on the front and yieldedjust one hole, No. 4, toMattson.

He also won the firsttwo holes on the backnine with consecutivebirdies to take a seem-ingly comfortable 4-holelead.

But you can nevercount Mattson out. Hecharged ahead with fivestraight wins, highlight-ed by an eagle on No. 12and a birdie on No. 15.

Seashore’s big leadwas gone with the tideand he found himselfdown by one with justtwo holes left.

Mattson didn’t pro-vide much of an opening. He made par on the finaltwo holes to preserve a1-up victory.

Mattson was 3-overpar on the front but 3-under on the back.Seashore was 1-over thefront and 2-over on theback.

Constable def. Klein, 4-2Constable continues to play nearly

flawless golf. Through 16 holes yes-terday, he was 5-under par. As Geoff

But Klein was no slouch on thecourse either. He won No. 1 withbirdie and added wins on No. 4 (par)and No. 5 (birdie) to go 3-up.

Constable didn’t get flustered, however. He won the next four holeswith three straight birdies and a parto steal the lead at the turn.

The Freeman family still has a shotat winning a 2010 Resorters champi-onship, thanks to Jon’s easy win yes-terday.

But first he’s got to get by Steve Tax,who defeated Jon’s brother Stefan, theExecutive Division’s defending cham-pion, on Thursday.

If he does that, another roadblockstands in his way – either DavidDilley of Alexandria or Al Hagen, whoslipped past Joel Harris yesterday, 1-up.

The semifinalists will tee it up thismorning at 6:54 a.m. from the No. 1tee. The winners will advance to thechampionship match that’s set to startat about 1 p.m., also from No. 1.

Here’s what happened yesterday:Tax def. Eidsvold, 1-up

The match between Steve Tax ofSartell and Alexandria’s BrianEidsvold was like a heavyweight titlefight.

Each golfer delivered a flurry ofpunches, but in the end, Tax was thelast man standing.

Eidsvold drew first blood with threestraight wins on Nos. 3, 4 and 5,thanks to two pars and a birdie.

Tax withstood the assault byunleashing a devastating counterattack – five straight par wins start-ing on No. 6.

After a “no decision” on No. 11,Eidsvold got in another jab, a stingingbirdie win on No. 12 followed by a parpunch on No. 13 that deadlocked thematch.

Tax fought right back, winning Nos.14 and 15 with birdie, par to go 2-up.

Eidsvold delivered one more blow, apar win on No. 17 to take the match tothe final hole.

Pars ended the match with Tax get-ting the decision, 1-up.

Freeman def. Adams, 8-7On Thursday, it took Jon Freeman

21 grueling holes to defeat his oppo-nent, Chad Johnson, a semifinalistlast year.

Yesterday was a walk in the park.Freeman, the last of three Freeman

brothers still in contention, cruised toan 8-7 win over David Adams of MapleGrove.

The 47-year-old finance directorfrom Chanhassen will try to cash inhis first Executive Division title whenhe tangles with Tax in today’s semifi-nals.

Last year, Freeman advanced all the

way to the final match where he metup with his brother, Stefan, who cameout on top after 19 thrilling holes.

Dilley def. O’Connorin 19 holes

We could call it a “dilly” of a matchbut that’s too obvious. Alexandria’sDavid Dilley had a better descriptionof his clash against Alexandria GolfClub Superintendent DonnachaO’Connor: it was like a chess match.

“It was seesaw, back and forth thewhole way,” Dilley said after thematch. “Every time I thought I hadhim down he made a shot that mademe think, how did he do that?Donnacha just didn’t give in.”

Even after nine holes, the tightmatch continued on the back withthree straight ties.

Dilley finally broke the stalemate bywinning No. 13 and adding anotherwin on No. 14 when O’Connor misseda par-saving putt.

O’Connor had a chance to make upground when he hit a 3-wood rightdown the middle on No. 15 and waspositioned well for a birdie but hemissed the putt to halve the hole.

The golfers tied No. 16, making itdo-or-die time for O’Connor, who stilltrailed by two.

Dilley sent his tee shot into thetrees on the short 17th and O’Connorwon the hole with a gimme birdie.

Dilley hit his drive well on No. 18but it rolled under a pine tree andO’Connor again took advantage to winthe hole with par and send the matchinto overtime.

On the first extra hole, Dilley hit agood shot over from the trees to makepar and win the match.

Hagen def. Harris, 1-upIn a tightly played down-to-the-wire

duel, Al Hagen of Harrisburg, SouthDakota outlasted former AlexandrianJoel Harris of Summit, New Jersey.

The match boiled down to nine dif-ference-making holes.

On the front nine, Hagen won Nos.3, 6 and 7, all with pars, while Harrisprevailed on Nos. 8 and 9, also withpars.

Hagen padded his lead to 2-up witha birdie win on the 10th hole only todrop No. 12 when Harris dropped in abirdie.

Hagen rallied with a par win on thenext hole but Harris hung tough, win-ning No. 14 with another birdie.

From there, the match turned into atest of wills with neither golfer gain-ing any ground. They shot nothing butpars on the final four holes, preservingHagen’s 1-up victory.

Who will be the firstJunior 13-15 Divisionchampion – Marshall’sMatthew Bennett orMinnetrista’s TommyBrandabur?

Bennett survived amarathon with hisopponent Grady Meyerin 21 holes, whileBrandabur advancedwith a 4-3 decision overMitch Freeman of St.Cloud.

We’ll find out shortlyas Bennett andBrandabur will tee offtoday at noon on thefirst tee for the final 18holes of play.

Bennett battlesMeyer 21 holes

A total of 21 holeswere needed beforeBennett could edge outhis opponent in theupper bracket of the 13-15 division yesterday.

Meyer started offwith a bang as hebirdied the first hole ofthe day, then took a parwin on No. 3.

Then it wasBennett’s turn. TheMarshall golfer grabbedthe ensuing hole on apar win, and erased anydeficit with a birdie onthe next hole.

Not to be outdone,Meyer retaliated, win-ning on a birdie at No.7, but Bennett againresponded with his ownbirdie and added a winon No. 9 to go into theturn 1-up.

Neither golfer waswilling to give as theyscorched their waythrough the back ninewith Meyer winningNos. 11 (par), 14 (birdie)and 16 (par), whileBennett countered withwins on Nos. 12 (birdie)and 13 (par), sendingthe match to extra hole.

The first two extrasended in a deadlock asthe duo both notchedpars, with Bennett

finally ending it on No.3 with a par win.

Brandabur def.Freeman 4-3

Brandabur found hisstride during his matchagainst Freeman yes-terday, making a quickcomeback with a pair ofwins after allowingFreeman to take thefirst hole on a birdie.

The Minnetristagolfer won six of thefront nine holes, four onbirdies (Nos. 3, 6, 8 and9), while givingFreeman just one otherwin, that on the fifthhole.

On the back, bothplayers shared the firsttwo holes beforeBrandabur scored whatwould be the winninghole with a birdie onNo. 12.

The two playedthrough three moreholes, one par win forFreeman sandwichedbetween two halvedholes, that brought thematch to an early end.

Who will it be?The 69-year-old

retired Alexandrian,Tom Eidsvold, who fireda 78 qualifying round(two strokes behind themedalist)?

Or 71-year-old GeorgeMikesh of Scottsdale,Arizona, who overcamethe pressure to win hisfirst two rounds in extraholes?

They’ll tee it up todayat approximately 12:20p.m. to determine whowill be the 2010Resorters Masters’champion.

Neither golfer haswon the division before. The last six years thetop prize went to RonClayton of Sarasota,Florida. (A schedulingconflict preventedClayton from competingthis year.)

Here’s a recap of yes-terday’s semifinalrounds:Eidsvold def. Seavall,

3-2A slow start doomed

Steve Seavall ofSpicewood, Texas. Hewas 6-over par on thefront nine with nobirdies and just fourpars – one of them awinner on No. 3.

Eidsvold took advan-tage by wrapping up fivewins on the front, Nos. 2,4, 6, 8 and 9, highlightedby a birdie on the 6thhole.

Seavall played a littlebetter after the turn –he won Nos. 10 and 14with pars – but he hadtoo much ground tomake up. Eidsvold wonthe 11th hole with parand was able to matchSeavall’s bogey and paron Nos. 15 and 16 toclose out the match, 3-2.

Mikesh def.Mohwinkel,

5-4Mikesh was probably

bracing himself foranother long day on thecourse, considering his

first match went 19holes and his secondlasted 20.

But this time, playingagainst Dan Mohwinkelof Annandale, it was allover after just 14 holes.

Mikesh grabbed theearly lead with a parwin on No. 2 and a birdiewin on No. 4.

Mohwinkel gainedground with a par winon No. 5 only to drop thenext hole to Mikesh’sbirdie.

Mohwinkel retaliatedwith a birdie of is ownon No. 7 but Mikeshclosed the front ninewith a bang, winning thelast two holes with parsto go 3-up at the turn.

Mikesh ramped up thepressure with anotherpar win on the 10th holeand padded his lead to5-up with a par win onthe long No. 12.

All he had to do fromthere was matchMohwinkel’s bogey onNo. 13 and his par onNo. 14 to ice the win.

Former Resorters Women’s champion Betsy Aldrich sent her putt toward the holeon the 1st green yesterday afternoon.

There is no such thing as over spinon a golf ball at the moment ofimpact. Even when using a putter, the ball leaves the clubface withsome backspin. Only when the ballsettles on the ground and begins rollingwill the backspin reverse and turn intoover spin.

The driver swing speed of an aver-age lady golfer is 62mph; 96mph foran average LPGA professional;84mph for an average male golfer;108mph for an average PGA Tourplayer; 130mph for Tiger Woods;148-152mph for a national long drivechampion. The next time you hearsomeone say professional golfers arenot athletes, clue them in on this. 1mph of swing speed increase = 1.5mphof ball velocity increase = 3 yards ofcarry distance increase.

Golf buffs may cry “Sacrilege!”, butthereʼs an alternative version of thegame in existence. Invented in 1989,Golfcross uses big suspended netsinstead of holes, and the balls are oval– like golf balls crossed with eggs. There are dedicated courses from NewZealand to the UK, if youʼre feelingadventurous.

Thereʼs a long-standing myth thatthe word “golf” is an acronym ofGentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden.Which is amusing, but unfortunatelycomplete rubbish. The word actuallystems from original 15th Centuryspellings that included “gouf”, “goulf”,“goiff” and “gouff” (indecisive lot, 15thCentury Scots).

Golf was actually outlawed inScotland in 1457. James II was thekilljoy behind the ban – he was prepar-ing for an English invasion and wantedhis citizens to concentrate on usefulhobbies like archery. The ban was

eventually lifted quite some time later,in 1502.

Ever wondered where the golfingterm “birdie” comes from? It seems wehave an American named Ab Smith tothank. While striding around a coursein 1899, he played what he describedas a “bird of a shot”, which became“birdie” over time. (“Bird” was 19thAmerican slang for anything really, really good. Kind of like “cool” is forus.)Dormie, the golf jargon word refer-ring to a player decisively leading agame, comes from “dormir”, a word ofshared French and Latin origin whichmeans “to sleep”. In other words, theplayerʼs so far in front he can afford tosleep.

There are 336 dimples on a regulationgolf ball.

The longest putt in history wasmeasured at 140 feet and 2 3/4 incheson the 18th hole at St. Andrewʼs golfcourse. It was shot by Bob Cook onOctober 1, 1976.

There are approximately 11,000 golfcourses in North America.

There are more than 50 milliongolfers in the world.

Americans spend more than $600million on golf balls every year.

The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf are one in 67million.

The putter is the most-used club ingolf.

The older you get the stronger thewind gets...and it’s always in yourface.

– Jack Nicklaus

A good player prays for wind everyday, but not too earnestly.

– John L. Low

If the wind is in your face, youswing too hard just to get the ballthrough it; if the wind is at your back, you swing too hard just to see how faryou can get the ball to go.

– Henry Beard

If the purpose of golf is purgatorial, nothing more needs to be said. But ifthe purpose is to entertain as well asinstruct, then let us pause in the madrush for hazards, more hazards andstill more and fiercer hazards.

– William Hemingway (in 1909)

I’ve lost balls in every hazard andon every course I’ve tried. But when Ilose a ball in the ball washer, it’s timeto take stock.

– Milton Gross

Once when I was golfing inGeorgia, I hooked the ball into theswamp. I went in after it and found analligator wearing a shirt with a pic-ture of a little golfer on it.

– Buddy Hackett

You can, legally, possibly hit andkill a fellow golfer with a ball, andthere will not be a lot of troublebecause the other golfers will refuse tostop and be witnesses because theywill want to keep playing.
