Limited Volume Vials Top Measurement

We refer to anything less than 1.5mL as Limited Volume Vials. The Top Measurement of the vial matches the cap size that fits. (A 9mm cap fits on a 9mm top.)

Opening Sizes

Resolution Systems uses the terms standard and large. Some manufacturers refer to standard opening size small.

Certified or Non-Certified? What are the facts? The cleanliness issue The vial process begins with a stick of vial tubing being placed in the machine. (see attached video of an RP 16 machine). The vial forming process requires heat that creates stress in the glass. The glass is then annealed (heated to take the strain out of the glass) at temperatures ranging from 560C to 630C. No organics will survive this environment. All certified vials are commonly tested right after the annealing process and will no doubt pass certification for no organics. Additionally, there will be no particulates in the vial at this stage in the process. Free samples Before paying extra for certification you may not need, we offer free samples of any of our products. This way, you can test our products in your environment under the same conditions you will be using the products day in and day out. Theres NO manufacturer out there who can test the products under every conceivable solvent condition. With the products being tested by you under your conditions and our tight controls over every step in the manufacturing and packaging process, you have the assurance you need with better cost controls. Once they leave the manufacturing location as certified product, how can you guarantee that they are certified when they are opened in the lab, exposed to chemicals, etc.? Remember, the vials come out of the annealing process above 530C. Also, 97% of the global vial market is non certified product. Does this mean that 97% of the vials are bad? Time and time again, our vials have outperformed the brand names. So, why pay more if you dont have to?

The quality control of dimensional specifications factor This is where NOT all vials are created equal. Those touting their certified vials all indicate that the vials are dimensionally certified. This is due to the fact that the vial manufacturer they are purchasing the vials from (note that none of them actually manufacture their vials) are using camera gauging which allows them to say the vials are 100% QCd for dimensional attributes. Our vials are also. Plus, one of the partners in Chrom4 is the actual manufacturer! Opto-electronic (photo camera) devices on the glass machines measure within fractions of a second, whether the vial meets our specifications. A second photo camera inspection checks for cosmetic errors (cracks, chips) in the glass. Length gauging equipment measures dimensional specifications in addition to the camera inspection. When a vial is not according to specification, it automatically goes to waste. In addition, a manual random inspection and a final inspection to ISO and other quality standards assure you of a great, problem free and reliable product. And, what about the closures? Our polymeric closures are manufactured from pharma grade polypropylene thus ensuring that no contamination will occur. Additionally, no mold release agents are present in the plastic manufacturing process. The septa material, which is almost exclusively either PTFE/Silicone or PTFE/Silicone w/slit are platinum cured for extended periods of time to drive off the siloxanes which tend to be a major contaminant. Note that siloxanes are part of the silicone septa manufacturing process.

Dependable certification is availableFor a small extra cost, certification is available. Regarding the chemical cleanliness certification, our vials will be tested during the process - in the same manner certification is completed throughout our industry. We will test vials at the beginning, middle and end of the vial run. Note that we only run 50,000 pcs per lot which is tested. With three check points in the testing process - beginning, middle and end of the run, we ensure that no organics were introduced to the product. Resolution Systems always knows what lot size we are running, as we are closely connected to the manufacturing process. The lined closures can also be tested via LCMS and certified.

What about the packaging? The most likely potential for contamination occurs during the packaging process or as a result of the materials used in packaging. Our vials come out of the annealing process and directly into an environmentally controlled room preventing any potential for contamination during the packaging process. Since the next most common source of contamination is typically introduced from the packaging materials used, we first use a special vacuum form packaging that does not introduce any contaminants. Additionally, our vial packs are shrink wrapped with the same shrink wrap that the pharma vials are packed in. This means that the shrink wrap is phthalate free.

SEPTA TYPES

SEPTA TYPESThe purpose of this article is to provide you, the chromatographer, with a little background about the various septa available for autosampler vials and caps along with an understanding of the manufacturing processes that affect the product(s) you may be using or considering. To avoid compromising your test results, selecting the right septum is important. What is septa? For the purpose of chromatographic autosampler use, a septum is essentially a disk of rubber or similar material used to seal an autosampler vial. During the injection process, an autosampler needle will pierce the septum for the purpose of injection and, on withdrawal, the degree of elasticity of the septum determines reseal-ability. Most septa manufactured for chromatographic autosampler use are comprised of a rubber layer (such as natural rubber, butyl rubber or some version of silicone) and either one or two fluoropolymer (PTFE/ Teflon, FEP, TFE or ETFE/Tefzel) layers.

Fluoropolymer (PTFE/Teflon, FEP, TFE or ETFE/Tefzel) The primary application benefit of using a fluoropolymer layer is to reduce or prevent contamination of your sample or standards from extractables in the rubber material in other words, to maximize chemical resistance. To determine which fluoropolymer layer is best suited for your application, remember that by increasing the fluorine content of the polymer increases the chemical and solvent resistance, lowers the coefficient of friction, and increases its thermal stability. An additional benefit of the fluoropolymer layer is minimizing cross contamination. This is based on the likelihood that as the needle is withdrawn the stiffer layer, the fluoropolymer may aid in wiping the needles exterior surface. Please keep in mind that all septa has extractables given the right solvent matrix, even the best manufactured silicone products. Sometimes, the only way to be certain is to test the product in your lab under your solvent and application specific parameters. The manufacturing environment and processes are highly controlled for all septa offered by Resolution Systems, Inc. The quality of our septa will meet or exceed the most demanding chromatographic applications to prevent improper re-sealing or skewed test results. Our trained staff are ready to assist you in selecting the best septa for your application.

Matches PTFEs resistance to caustic agents. FEP has a lower melting point than PTFE. Excellent solvent resistance and chemical compatibility. But, straight PTFE does not seal as well as septum with a rubber layer nor does it re-seal after being penetrated by the needle. Used for analyses where PTFE interferes with the sample, such as PFOS, PFOA, etc. Good reseal-ability, < 260C. chlorinated solvents, benzene, toluene, alcohols, hexane, heptane Excellent reseal-ability, PTFE/Butyl Rubber septa designed for pharmaceutical headspace applications Excellent reseal-ability, < 100C, ACN, acetone, DMF, alcohols, diethylamine, DMSO, phenols Excellent reseal-ability, < 100C, ACN, acetone, DMF, alcohols, diethylamine, DMSO, phenols Excellent solvent resistance and chemical compatibility FEP Matches PTFEs resistance to caustic agents.
