Introduction

This report provides the results of the Markets section of the January 2011 survey of the Residents’ Panel. Background information The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea established a Residents’ Panel as a cost effective means of handling the growing number of consultation surveys undertaken by the Council. The Panel is surveyed four times a year. The Panel has an ongoing process of recruitment. This is intended to replace Panel members who leave the Panel, for example members who no longer wish to participate or who move out of the Royal Borough. Residents’ Panel members stay on the Panel for a maximum of two years. This is because Panel members become more knowledgeable about the way in which the Council works, and therefore cease to be representative of the population as a whole. Recruiting new members to the Panel also enables more members of the public to have the opportunity to take part. The number of Panel members currently stands at 1367 but is constantly being updated. Survey methodology A questionnaire was designed to include questions on the following subject areas:

• Healthcare • Arts and Culture • Libraries • Markets

The January 2011 Residents’ Panel survey also had an ‘online’ component with a number of Panel members receiving the survey over the Internet. The questionnaire has exactly the same questions as the paper questionnaire but is presented slightly differently. A total of 436 completed questionnaires were received equating to a response rate of 32 per cent. The percentages reported are rounded to the nearest percentage point; therefore on occasion the totals may not be exactly 100 per cent. The responses to the questions show that:

• Nearly three quarters of respondents (71 per cent) had visited a street, covered, and/ or flea market in the last six months

• Portobello Road market was the favourite market amongst respondents

• 38 per cent of respondents visit their favourite market once a week or more often

• 82 per cent of respondents suggested that they visited their favourite market to buy fruit,

vegetables, or other fresh produce

• 73 per cent of respondents stated that they would be interested in visiting a fresh produce or farmers market

• The internet was most popular preference for obtaining information about local events, however this was closely followed by local newspapers and leaflets and flyers

• Nearly two thirds of respondents (63 per cent) indicated that they would be interested in finding out more about Portobello and Golborne Road markets

• 56 per cent of respondents stated that they would be interested in helping to support Portobello and Golborne Road markets by shopping there when possible

The responses to this question show that 71 per cent of respondents have visited a street, covered and/ or flea markets in the last six months.

Looking at the results by demographic group shows that respondents aged under 50 were more likely than those aged over 50 to have visited a street market or covered market in the last six months. Respondents from the north of the borough were more likely to have visited than residents in the centre or south of the borough.

Markets The markets team wanted to gain a sense of how residents view the markets in the borough compared to other markets they may visit elsewhere.

The responses showed that the most popular market was Portobello Market 207 with respondents choosing this option in their top five and 166 of these placing it as their favourite market. The other popular markets included:

• Duke of York market with 52 respondents including that in their top five (also referred to as: Farmers market at Sloane Square, Duke of York farmers market, Duke of York market, Kings Road market, Chelsea food market, Kings Road Sloane Square farmers, Partridges food market)

• Notting Hill market with 42 respondents choosing this (also referred to as: Kensington farmers, Farmers market Kensington Place, One behind fish store near Kensington Church Street)

• Golborne Road with 40 respondents selecting this market • North End Road chosen by 34 respondents (also referred to as: North End Road Fulham/

Fulham market)

Over a third of respondents (38 per cent) visit their favourite market once a week or more often and 22 per cent visit once every two weeks. 16 per cent indicated that they visit less frequently.

Looking at the responses by demographic group respondents from the north of the borough indicated that they were more likely to visit their favourite market once a week or more. Q4. What are your reasons for visiting your favourite market?

The main reason given by those visiting their favourite market was to buy fruit, vegetables, or other fresh produce (82 per cent) followed by 37 per cent who visit as a day out or as a leisure activity/experience and 32 per cent visit to buy plants or flowers. Some of the other comments included:

Respondents aged under 50 were more likely to be interested in visiting a one off occasional specialist market and regular fresh produce or farmers markets. BME respondents expressed the highest level of interest in visiting local community markets. Q6. What is your preferred way of finding out about local events and information?

44 per cent of respondents indicated that they preference for accessing information about local events would be through the internet, 42 per cent suggested local newspapers and 41 per cent suggested that they would prefer leaflets of flyers. When the responses were broken down by demographic group the responses showed that:

• Male respondents preferred obtaining information through the internet compared to a slight preference for local newspapers amongst female respondents

• Those under 50 preferred to obtain information though the internet • BME respondents preferred to use local newspapers and information through leaflets or

flyers • Disabled respondents liked to obtain information via local newspapers

Just under two thirds of respondents (63 per cent) suggested that they would be interested in finding out more about Portobello and Golborne markets and 25 per cent stated that they would not. BME respondents were more likely than other demographic groups to suggest that they would be interested in finding out more about Portobello and Golborne Road markets.

Of the respondents who indicated that they would be interested in finding out more about Portobello and Golborne Road markets 47 per cent said they would like to be informed through posters and leaflets and 44 per cent stated that they would like to be informed via email. Some of the other comments included through the local library (three comments), through papers such as the Metro and word of mouth.

56 per cent of respondents stated that they would be interested in supporting Portobello and Golborne Road markets by shopping there when possible and 25 per cent said they would tell their family and friends about the markets. BME respondents were more likely to state that they would be happy to volunteer at events. BME respondents and those living in the north of the borough indicated that they would be happy to support these markets by shopping there when possible.

Great community events underlining the need for human interaction I live in the Portobello Road and do all of my shopping there! I shop all the time at the market - am distressed that the Council is letting shops like Kurt Geiger into Portobello and not doing enough to protect either the market or Kensington High Street - get your act together - protect Kensington High Street and the unique character of Portobello market -the two are not the same - do not allow multiples into the market - encourage the development of both!!! I use the local delis and coffee shops there quite a lot It's a market! You buy things at it..... Doh! Often just like to have a wander around Socialise, music purchase Street and square markets are an essential part of life in the borough and I am dismayed about the plans for Portobello which will change its nature irrevocably Tasting products The markets are one of my favourite things about this area.
