What must you do at all railroad crossings?

Slow down and check both ways.

However, you must stop when the lights begin flashing

Page 7: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Any idea what type of train this might be?

Page 8: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Your wait here could be several minutes. It would be a good idea to:

Shift to park and relax your foot.

Page 9: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

You need to be in the habit of slowing down and

checking the tracks every time you cross them.

You need to be in the habit of slowing down and

Eventually you’ll drive in areas where

crossings do not have gates, bells and lights!

Eventually you’ll drive in areas where

crossings do not have gates, bells and lights!

When approaching a railroad crossing with no lights or gates and poor visibility (less than 400 feet)

to either side, you must reduce your speed to properly check the tracks enabling you to stop if necessary.

Page 10: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

On this multiple track crossing, this stopped train may obscure your visibility of another_______train

STOPand

THINK

If you tooka chance going

around thelowered gate,

would you survive acollision?

Never do it!Your life is worth more than saving

a couple of minutes.

Page 11: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

What is the fine for going around a lowered crossing gate either as a pedestrian or a vehicle?

Page 12: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Watch for that second train

Movie will play – RR crossing

Page 13: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Another train was coming and Joe would not have seen it until it was too late…

More than 600 people are killed each at highway rail crossings

Always expect a train!

Watch for that second train

RIGHT of WAY SITUATIONS

Right of Way laws tell alldrivers who goes first in different situations. To

yield means a driver gives the right of way to another

driver or pedestrian.

Page 15: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Who must yield in this situation?

Uncontrolled 4 way intersection: Both vehicles arrive at same time.

A

B

Car A yields to Car B

Why?

Vehicles on the right have the right of way.

Page 16: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

It’s a 4 -way stop. We are going straight, they are turning left. (they stopped first)

Who must yield the right of way?

WE MUST. The first vehicle to stop can proceed first, whether it is turning or not turning.

Page 17: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

They should. Again, turning makes no difference at a 4-way stop.

Another 4-way stop. We want to turn left, and we stopped just before this car.

Who must yield the right of way?

Page 18: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

At this 4-way stop, we will stop at the same time as the car on the left, who must yield the right of way?

They should. Why?They should. Why?

If two vehicles stop at the same time, the driver

on the left is to yieldto the driver on the right.

Page 19: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Who must yield in this situation?

4 way stop intersection: All vehicles arriving at intersection at same time. Vehicle A intends to turn left.

A

B

Both B and C yields to Car A

Why?

Car A is on the right. At a four way stop turning does not

make a difference.

C

In some areas of the country, roundabouts are constructed to eliminate stop signs and facilitate

a safer intersection. They cause drivers to slow down and move to the right.

Page 25: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

By staying close to the center line (when making a left turn) other vehicles are able to pass you up on the right if there

is room.

Page 26: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

B

Car A yields to Car B

Why?

Turning vehicles yield to vehicles proceeding straight.

Page 27: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

YES, turning vehicles must yield to on-coming vehicles.

Must we yield to this on-coming truck? (we are turning left)

B

Car A yields to Car B

Why?

Vehicles on the through street have the right of way.

(Car A must turn)

Page 29: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

There’s a T-intersection up ahead. If a car appeared from the left, does it have to

yield the right of way to us?

Yes, turners must yield.

Yes, turners must yield.

Page 30: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

We will. Again, turners must yield.

STOPand

THINK

Should weview the right

of way as somethingwe have?

Neverassume theright of way.

It is somethingto be givenrather than

taken.

Who must yield the right of way at this intersection? We will or crossing vehicles?

Page 31: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

You see the man by the van…but what is another concern that you have?

There could be an on-coming vehicle approaching over the hill.

In addition to the workers eating lunch, what else have you identified up ahead?

SOMEONE STANDING ON OTHER SIDE OF PICK-UP TRUCK! SOMEONE STANDING ON OTHER SIDE OF PICK-UP TRUCK!

Get in the habit of looking in, around and even beneath parked vehicles.

THINK

Would you be able to

react in timeif somethinghappened?

Yes, if youreduce speed

and keep a comfortable

space cushion.

Page 40: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Be especially careful when making turns, you may not see them.

If you are a pedestrian, you must not suddenly walk or run into the path of a vehicle close enough to

be a danger to you!

Kids do not always check before running across the street. Be ready to stop!

Page 41: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

THIS JOGGER CANNOT SEE

VEHICLES APPROACHING.

Page 44: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

You want to turn right, what are you concerned about? What will you do here?

Stop and wait!

Page 45: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Movie will play - Pedestrians

Yield to pedestrians

Page 46: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Yield to pedestrians

A lot of people are walking more these days…whether for exercise or commuting. Sometimes though it can be a little scary especially in congested urban areas.

Please be patient and give us the right of way in crosswalks. Elderly people and children are among the most vulnerable pedestrians…so be careful around schools, retirement communities and recreation areas.

And remember, everyone is a pedestrian at one time or another.

Page 47: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Sharing the Road with Disabled Persons

Disabled persons using self-propelled wheel chairs, tricycles, or quadricycles are not able to move about as easily as pedestrians.

These persons should be given the same rights as any other pedestrians.

Disabled persons using guide dogs or white canes (with or without red tip) must be given the right of way at all times. They are partially or totally blind. Be especially careful when turning corners or backing up.

Page 48: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Sharing the road with bicycles

Bicyclists Responsibilities

They should also ride in a straight line near the curb or edge of the roadway when practical, but always a car door’s length away from parked vehicles.

Bicycles must ride with with the traffic flow, not against it.

Also, bicyclist must drive on the roadway, not the sidewalk and they are to use bicycle lanes, when available.

They can legally move left to turn left or pass parked cars or other hazards on the right side.

Page 49: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

True or False: This bicycle rider is on the proper side of the street?

Page 50: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

True or False: Bicycle riders should stop before exiting driveways.

Page 51: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

What are you searching for here?

Be cautious many cyclist will not stop.

Page 52: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Will you now tap your horn to alert this bicycle rider ?

No, you’re too close.

STOPand

THINK

What shouldermight the cyclist

look over if heheard yourhorn blast?

Probably his leftshoulder causing the bicycle to drift

to the _____.

Page 53: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

If this parked car was here, what would you anticipate?

Same thing, the cyclist would move left.

Page 54: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

What are three things this cyclist is doing correctly?

- riding on proper side of the street (with traffic)

- bright visible clothing

- protective helmet

change lanes

Page 55: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

What is this lane intended for? What is this lane intended for?

Page 56: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Many states have separate bicycle lanes.

You need to check behind you in this lane before turning right.

Right shoulder head check

Page 57: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Many do not have head or tail lights.

But their bright clothing is a wise choice.

What is a problem concerning bicycle riders as it becomes dark?

You’ll need to remember that they may have little or no shoulder room. Give them room when maneuvering around them.

Page 58: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Movie will play - bikes

Be careful around bicycles

Page 59: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Biking is a great way to get around. My friends and I like to bike a lot on the weekend.

While some areas have separate bike lanes or paths…many do not.

In these cases by law, bicycles have the right to share many roadways with other types of vehicles. When driving you need to be careful not to crowd bicyclist like me…sometimes we have to make sudden moves to avoid hazards like potholes or storm drains.

Be careful around bicycles

Page 60: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

What should you do in a situation like this?

Slow down, but first check the traffic situation.

Page 61: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Where will your hand and right foot be as you go through this situation?

It should be near the horn and on the brake.

It should be near the horn and on the brake.

Page 62: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

With parked cars on both sides, it is a little tight. Which vehicles will you move closer to and WHY?

Vehicles on the left side. You have better depth perception on your left side because you are sitting on that side of your car.

Page 63: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Sometimes two cars cannot both proceed. Someone has to stop and wait.

Page 64: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

What must you be aware of when going around this situation?

Page 65: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

That car is backing out, what should you do in this situation?

Tap your horn, the driver may not see you! Tap your horn, the driver may not see you!

..

Page 66: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Will the car backing out of driveway see us?

You’ll be turning right at the intersection. Besides yielding to crossing cars, what is

another concern that you have?

Page 67: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Besides 25 mph what are the other common urban and residential speed limits?

30 or 35 mph 30 or 35 mph

Page 68: Residential – part 2 RAILROAD SITUATIONS What must you do at all railroad crossings? Slow down and check both ways

Some streets may have have different speed limits for different directions (California).

Any idea why in this situation? - - better sight distance going down the

hill as opposed to going up the hill.
