AIR COMMANDOS TAKECONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPThe Hurlburt Field Air Commandos men’s varsity basketball team claimed the Southeastern Military Athletic Conference (SEMAC) championship February 19, 2018, defeating host Maxwell Air Force Base 82-80. Staff Sergeant Akelyan Rumph put Hurlburt ahead on a three point play with less than a minute left in regulation. The Commando’s defense held on to earn its seventh SEMAC conference tournament championship.

With the win, the nationally ranked No. 3 Air Commandos (20-3) earned the SEMAC automatic berth to the 2018 Military National Basketball Championships, which will be held at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio Texas over Memorial Day weekend.

The Air Commandos entered the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed after posting a 17-3 regular season record and its ninth regular season championship. To reach the Championship game the Commandos posted wins against 7th SFG Duke Field 89-77, Maxwell AFB 85-78, before defeating the defending Champions Maxwell AFB, who fought their way out of the losers bracket.

SSgt Akeylan “AK” Rumph, was named the league MVP and the tournament MVP. He was joined on the all-tournament team

by SSgt Dominique “Screech” Dalton and Mr. Wally “Fireman” Carney who both were also named to the league all-SEMAC team. Mr. Dexter Mitchell, the team’s head coach was named Coach of the Year.

The varsity basketball program allows athletes to compete with other teams who have a higher level of skills or are seeking to make the Air Force basketball team. Hurlburt field had 36 individuals participate in tryouts which starts the second week of August each year. This group was cut to 15 with 13 going to the post season tournament.

SEMAC rules allow for active duty, active guard and reserve and only two civilians per team, GS, NAF or family member 18yrs or older to participate. The league consists of teams from Eglin AFB, Duke Field, NAS Jacksonville, NAS Mayport, Maxwell AFB, Ft Stewart, Ft Rucker, Robins AFB, Keesler AFB, and Hurlburt Field, MacDill will be joining SEMAC next year.

This year Coach Mitchell and the Air Commandos are hoping to duplicate their 2014 Nationals run where they advanced to the Nationals Championship game. But unlike 2014, Coach Mitchell and his team hope to bring Hurlburt a National Championship.

GRAND RE-OPENINGWhere the Air Commandos Play

C ommandos have spoken, and leadership has listened. After much anticipation and over $2.1 million in

renovations, Gator Lakes Golf Course is set to have their Grand Re-Opening ceremony on Friday, 6 April 2018. Our revamped golf course will now be exclusive only to DoD ID cardholders to ensure that our military community isn’t waiting in line for tee times with the general public. Come join the staff and leadership at Gator Lakes for a first look at the new Pro Shop, an early morning shotgun tournament, ribbon cutting, and light refreshments!

An exciting new era arises for our base as the revitalized greens continue its stride toward professional grade—this time, from the inside-out. Golf Course manager, Jason Woodling describes the makeover as a complete demolition of the aged irrigation system. “It’s been replaced by a double valve system with rough lines running through the entire course—allowing us to provide routine maintenance that will ensure a long-lasting foundation and constantly improving greens,” Mr. Woodling said. It’s the perfect complement to the salt-water tolerant paspalum grass that very few courses in this region offer but is preferred by the pros.

The full renovation process began in February 2017 by tearing up and replacing the landscape little by little to replace each valve under the course. As a convenience to their loyal members, the golf course avoided full closure during the nine month construction by closing only 9 holes at a time alternating weeks so the avid golfers would be able to get their fix seven days a week.

Remodeling is also in the works for the indoor area to help warrant a full-spectrum fresh start for Gator Lakes.

From floor to ceiling, the Pro Shop and dining area are also undergoing a makeover to be unleashed at the grand re-opening in April.

Are You Golf Ready?

Gator Lakes was redesigned in hopes of gaining golfers of all skill and age levels. If you need to learn the basics of golf, the lingo on the course or the proper etiquette expected on the greens, “Get Golf Ready” is a program offered on base to get you comfortable with your new-found hobby. You can take lessons from golf pro Randy Stevens right on our course. Whether you are picking up a club for the first time or need a few pointers on your swing, Randy will be able to help you reach your golf goals.

Don’t worry, our on-site Pro Shop will help you look the part. We can supply you from high-end Nike cleats on your feet to the proper golf ball cap on your head. While you and your friends are trying on your new ensemble for the day, the other half of your group can get fitted for their perfect club by the qualified staff. Whether it’s your first day out on the course or just need an upgraded wardrobe for an upcoming tournament, the Pro Shop at Gator Lakes is a one-stop shop.

A Bad Day of Golf Beats a Good Day at Work

I sat down with a few of the “Gator Gals”—a lady’s golf group that get together at least once a week to talk about why they will always choose Gator Lakes. Denise Knuth, the group organizer, started out as a spectator, watching her son take golf lessons on base with the on-site golf pro over two years ago. When her husband deployed shortly

after, she decided to take a swing at things, and she’s been addicted ever since. “To me, it’s about meeting new people and sharing a hobby no matter what skill level you’re at.” Knuth said. “You can be having the worst day, but we always end up laughing together and having the best time.” Knuth explains the golf game on Hurlburt as a nature walk—almost always seeing a gator, bear, or deer sharing the property with fellow golfers.

Another golf newcomer and fellow Gator Gal, Lisa Haggett, had great things to say about Oasis Café. “Before or after our game, we always make it a point to stop in.” Haggett said. “The staff is so friendly and we can actually choose healthy food!” The on-site restaurant offers a mouth-watering menu for breakfast and lunch, 7 days a week. With a view of the flight line and the option to sit inside or out, you will want to make time to visit Oasis Café. You can find their menu on our website www.myhurlburt.com to see their monthly specials and plan your meal for tee time.

For Gator Gal Pod Frease, a veteran golfer from Colorado, the changes at Gator Lakes Golf Course were the determining factor for her continuing membership in 2018. “When I golfed here for the first time about a year ago, I almost stopped at hole 9 and left. It was like golfing on a pile of dirt.” Frease started noticing the promise of renovation take place and decided to stick around to see the improvements. “Even though it’ll take a few months to show the changes with the irrigation system, I can already see a huge difference at each hole.” Frease said. “I’m excited to see what it will look like in early spring when the weather evens out.” The Gator Gals encourage women of any skill and age level to try out their golf game or even just have a day out to laugh and make friends. Please contact Denise Knuth at [email protected] for further details.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the Grand Re-Opening of Gator Lakes Golf Course on Friday, 6 April from 1-5pm to get the first look at the multimillion dollar makeover and enjoy some refreshments with the people who made it all possible. If you are interested in participating in the shotgun tournament, please call Jason Woodling at 581-0007.
