University of Pennsylvania Criminologists Receive NIMH Grant
The University of Pennsylvania has recently receiv- ed a large grant from NIMH for conducting a 3-year re- search project cancerned with an age cohort analysis of delinquency. Using school files from Philadelphia, Drs. Sellin and Wolfgang and their research staff will attempt to provide delinquency rates for an entire cohort of males all born in 1945 and will trace their names through the master record file of the Juvenile Aid Division in that city. It is assumed that such a rate will present a more accurate and valid indication of the amount of delin- quency than use of single calendar years. In effect. a cohort analysis will provide an answer to the question: What proportion of juveniles who are exposed in the community to the juvenile court age limits (in Pennsyl- vania i-17) ever become delinquent? Moreover, using the system of weighting of offenses derived from the measurement of delinquency, Drs. Sellin and Wolfgang will attempt to provide a mathematical assessment of the relative degrees of seriousness of offenses committed by juveniles in the c~hart. Prediction profiles based upon the time interval between offenses and the chang- ing patterns of delinquency by age will canstitute ad- ditional aspects of the cohort study.
