Research & Scholarship Integrity

Education in responsible conduct of research is a federally required mandate. First issued in ‘89 by NIH and then revised in ‘10; NSF adopted a similar act in ‘07

Our goal at BC is to help in the formation of professional identity for our students and trainees -that is grounded in education, in ethical scholarship and research practices.

So what does this mean?

Being a good scientist, a good researcher means more than having a quantitative skill set or high intellect – it requires integrity when doing one’s research.

This entails upholding the values and norms of the research enterprise-these are honesty, being trustworthy, accountable, transparent, discerning, it also means helping and collaborating with others.

What are some of the goals?

We hope you leave here today seeking to start an ongoing with faculty, students, post-docs and undergraduates about research and scholarship integrity.

We want to familiarize you with the accepted norms and values of your field of study that constitute good research and scholarship

Be knowledgeable of professional, institutional (BC), state and federal polices and guidelines that govern responsible scholarship and research.

Be knowledgeable of professional, institutional (BC), state and federal polices and guidelines that govern responsible scholarship and research.

Provide with the tools and resources to further inquire into any of the areas of the program.

We want you to be familiar with and reflect often upon the ethical issues that you are likely to encounter throughout your training and career

Learn to recognize when ethical issues arise

Engage in what we term moral imagination: to see the situation’s context, the various perspective, and the possible consequences of different actions.

Understand what resources are available should an ethical issue arise
