Concept of Mental Health and Its Importance in

Āyurveda: A Review Article

Shanker Lal Burdak*, Shreeram Kumawat, Nisha Gupta P.G. Dept. of Basic Principles, National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

Abstract Health according to Āyurveda is not merely the absence of physical disease; it requires a

happy mind and soul too. This subtle aspect of self is often neglected, resulting in

unhealthiness. Āyurveda has duly recognized the individuality of mana (psyche) and śarīra (body) and their inseparable and interdependent relationship in a living body.

While defining āyu, it is said that ‘life is the combined state of body, senses, mind and

soul.’ According to Āyurveda there is an imbalance in Tridoṣas when there is a causative factor. The guṇas of mind rajas and tamas are also affected simultaneously. Excess of

śoka (sorrow), ciṁta (unnecessary thinking), kāma (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (delusion), īrṣyā (jealousy), abhimāna (pride), mada (euphoria), and bhaya (fear)

are some of the negative emotions which can contribute to mental imbalance. Holding on

to negative emotions and past experiences are considered as toxins affecting mind. Here, An attempt is made to project at one place the available Āyurvedic material on manas

and mental health in an orderly manner which would be both easy to understand and rewarding in the field of treatment, by describing the definition of health, need of mental

health and its relation with physical health, Mental Health Review with-Somatic and

Psychic factors regulating mental health, Physiological and Pathological Aspect of Mental Health, Preventive aspect of mental health, discussion and conclusion.

Abstract Rasashastra; an ancient branch of pharmaceutics and therapeutics which deals with use of metal and minerals for the wellbeing of human being. Rasashastra elaborated different

procedures like Shodhana, Marana, Jarana, Satvapatana (Extraction), Kupipakva

Rasayana etc. to convert the metal into nontoxic and bioassimible form. Marana procedure is combination of five unique step like Shodhana, Bhavana (Levigation with

herbal Juices), Pelletisation, Sharava Samputikarana (Special instrument in which Heat

is applied after keeping pellets ), Puta (Application of specific heating pattern). Repetition of Puta is indicated till the desired characters of Bhasma are achieved like

Varitartva (Floating of Bhasma on steady surface of water), Rekhpurnatva (occupying the inter ridge space on the skin of finger pad), Niruttha (not to regain its original

elemental metallic form). Thus Marana, a complex procedure converts the elemental,

toxic and non-bio-compatible form of metal and minerals into nano sized organic complex which are nontoxic and biocompatible.

Stress Management through Yoga and Meditation

G. R. Valliammal* Research Centre for Commerce, Thiruvalluvar College, Papanasam, Tamil Nadu, India

Abstract Stress is an integral part of the natural fabric of life. Some of it occurs because we try to

do too much in the time available and some of difficulties with interpersonal relationships either at home or at work. Stress is currently defined in at least two

different ways. It refers to the dangerous, potentially harmful or unpleasant external situations and, secondly to the internal thoughts, judgements, emotional states and

physiological processes that are evoked by stressful stimuli. Stress can be either

temporary or long lasting. Due to heavy stress that affects the physical and psychological aspects of the human being, one should think positively and adopt the right ways of

resolving the stress-related problems .Stress management involves controlling and

reducing the tension that occurs in stressful situations by making emotional and physical changes. Meditation, yoga, pranayama, physical exercises, physical relaxations etc. are

the important techniques that are to be followed to manage stress. Yoga will help man to perform all of his duties in harmony with the laws of nature and the sentiments and

conventions of society. Meditation helps psychophysical control of the human organs and

maintence of steadiness and strength. It helps in the emotional problems and also helps to reduce physical, mental and emotional tension. Pranayama is another step in the

systematic study of yoga. It is the method of deep breathing by which one can absorb larger quantities of atmospheric energy by expanding the lungs to one’s capacity. It is

necessary to do exercises regularly to balance the body functions, strengthen the body

parts and to regularize the functioning of all ‘systems’. Exercises strengthen the muscles and normalize the activities of the endocrine glands. Rest and relaxation helps to prevent

heart trouble and brings down blood-pressure. It also reduces mental stress and tension

and body becomes energized.
