Research Residency Programme

Most of us would have taken a flight.

Remember how it starts after boarding? There is a part where all

entertainment systems will switch to a safety video, or pause for a safety

demonstration. And remember how it ends? There is a part when again

all entertainment systems give way to a series of announcements. At

both times, all large electronic equipment like laptops must be switched

off and mobile phones must be placed in the flight safe mode.

In between, the flight may encounter turbulence. But otherwise work

may be done, movies may be viewed, meals may be enjoyed and sleep

may be done. Some folks will be able to relax more than others: people

who adapt well to flights, people who sit in first or business class. Some

airlines also provide better facilities or service than others. Some airlines

provide minimal comforts, especially the budget ones.

Research is like a flight. Methodical, sometimes boring. Especially if one has flown many times before

and the exuberance of novel experiences has worn off. We will need to ride through the bumps, and

learn when to take a nap. Some of us get to travel in more luxury than others. There will be a mixture

of good journeys and uncomfortable ones.

Not everyone would choose to fly. For those of us who do, and when we are clear about our chosen

destination, by and large, we will all get there.
