The Rap “Sample” Example
• Research needs sources, like our rappers need “samples.”
• When rappers do not attribute their riffs, many lawsuits abound!
• Listen to Jay-Z and Timbaland’s $100,000 error.

The Questions
• How can we teach our students to provide original sources?
• How can we steer them toward books, periodicals and journals again?
• What methods can we use to help students practice proper citation?
![Page 4: Research Remix](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082804/548d72f8b47959ac488b46d0/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
I Think, Therefore I Write
• Students have problems writing when they are not thinking critically.
• Writing forces them to think.
• Class discussions must provoke thought by using contemporary reference points.
• Thought will follow.

Finding Sources
• Students need to know that Google and Wikipedia are only starting points.
– Google Scholar & Google Books.
• The library is still a viable resource.
• Students can search the catalog, reserve books and arrange for delivery to the Northwood Branch.

Citing Sources
• Encourage students to use current debates as references in their writing.
• Teach them the difference between a blog post and a more reputable news editorial.
• Practice citation, both in and out of the classroom.

Provide Offline Support
• Procrastination is the main reason students plagiarize.
• Consider a class Facebook group.
• Think about sharing your PowerPoint presentations on slideshare.net.
• Create Google Docs of the handouts you distribute,.
