    RESEARCH PROPOSAL OUTLINE

1.0 TITLE : DRESSING CODES DURING LECTURE HOURS

    2.0 Background Information

According to the Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English 2009 which is

published by Oxford University Press 2009, dress code can be defined as a set of rules

which are usually written and publish specifying the required manner of dress in certain

places. In this research paper, the dress codes implemented by the Skudai Campus of

University of Technology Malaysia will be investigated to determine if the students are

content with the current rulings, with the scope narrowed down to during class hours.

The administrative staffs and law enforcers of UTM Skudai, namely the security

guards would naturally hope the students abide by the said rulings and dress accordingly

to circumstances such as to classes or formal events. However, it is effortless to notice an

increasing number of students which are either unaware or display intentional negligence

towards the rulings. Hence, different actions are taken against the likes of them

depending on the authority figure. One can be forced to leave a lecture theater if one is

caught by the lecturer, or be fined for a certain amount if the offence is noticed by any ofthe security guards. Often, these actions had to taken in order to maintain a certain set of

standard which prevents the dignity of the institution from being tarnished. Therefore this

research aims to understand the views and opinions of both parties.

    3.0 Statement of Problem

The issue of students dress codes has indeed brought forth quite a number of

debates to the table which can be obviously seen from the increasing number of

complaints from the students themselves in regards to the practicality of the current

    ruling specifically during class hours.

Dress to impress. If the phrase is understood from a different perspective and

applied in this situation, it simply means that the students are restricted to express their

    6.0 Research Questions

6.1 How far do students understand and follow the current dress codes

imposed by the university during class hours?

6.2 Why do students display ignorance instead of obliging to the current

    dress code during classes?

6.3 To what extend does the present dress code influence ones personality?

6.4 Under what circumstances should the current dress codes be revamped to

suit the present needs of the students?

    7.0 Significance of Study

Even though the students are required to obey the dress codes, it does not mean

that the ruling fulfill the students needs for comfortability. One way or another, the

findings from this study will contribute in further understanding the present needs of a

student in regards to appropriate dressing. In turn, this hopefully will give them the

chance for freedom of expression among the student themselves while dressing in an

    acceptable manner during class hours.

    8.0 Scope

This study aims to represent the opinions of students all over UTM Skudai in

regards to the present dress code during class hours. Hence the data collecting process

will be conducted in most of the faculties but limited only to both students and lecturers.
