Clara Blazary is an LA-based photographer whose photos of ordinary moments somehow seem extraordinary when she's through with them. She's already shooting campaigns for big name companies, and Urban Outfitters profiled her a few years ago. She was also mentioned on their blog as someone interesting to follow on tumblr, this boosted her follows on social media and gained her some recognition for her photos. Since then she has taken some photos for Dazed magazine which is another Indie magazine.

Emma Summerton is a well known photographer. She has worked with many big magazine companies with in my genre of magazine. These include, dazed, Vogue Italia, i-D, W Magazine and more. She seems to experiment with a lot of different fashion statements in her photographs. Some can be considered very quirky and unusual and I really like her unique style. She has worked with high fashion magazines such as Vogue, where she has been given the opportunity to…. A lot of her photographs are bright and colourful with eccentric hair pieces and clothes whilst others remain more muted.

Emmanuel Olunkwa is a New York via L.A based photographer. He is currently studying Architectural Theory and Culture + Media at a school in New York City. He started off taking photos for a friends fashion blog. As he started taking more photos, he began to think more critically about his work (lighting, composition, etc). He has developed a large following on social media and has started to photograph some big celebrities. I love his photography so much. The photos look really retro with a vintage feel. I think this is because he mixes a lot of bold colours with other muted tones which creates the vintage/retro look. I think it is perfect for the genre of magazine I have chosen and I am very inspired by his work.

Antoine and Charlie are a Parisian photography couple who take a strong interest in photography and beauty. They predominantly shoot beauty and try to add their own twist that comes from inspirations they took from their own past experiences. They find working as a couple beneficial as, during a shoot, they can divide their attention e.g one can focus on technique and the other on the client. In an interview they said “As a boy and the girl we have different sensibilities and capture different emotions.” I really admire these two photographers. I love their style and the simplicity of their photos. I also like how they put a twist on a lot of the photos. S it is not just the models face, they may add some drawings or bold eyeshadow. I also think that all the photos are really crisp and clear.

Magazine creators:

Liz Ann Bennet is the editor of bimonthly independent women’s title Oh Comedy. The name of the magazine comes from the song by Neutral Milk Hotel. Although Bennet has made a lot of effort not to give into the clichés of women’s publishing and magazines, she has still made a lot of effort to get her magazine sold in mainstream stores such as WHSmith where it is sold alongside other mainstream magazines. She argues that she is not a critic of mainstream women magazines, but she just wants to improve them. It is very noticeable in all of her magazines that she likes to stick to the alternative/indie side of women magazines. All her covers are very aesthetically pleasing and simplistic which is a style I am very fond of.

Joshua Ogden is the creator of Justified magazine. Justified is a magazine that promotes both the independent and mainstream areas of contemporary design and photography. Its goal is to celebrate creative individuals who are at the forefront of these areas, while also curating some of the best up-and-coming artists in their particular fields. Justified has a simple design that is able to elegantly promote the work of others. The magazines do not feature many cover lines or anchor text which I like.

Graphic Designers

Christophe Brunnquell is the graphic designer who is responsible fro the the magazine’s sense of “purpleness”. He worked as an art director for The Purple Magazine founded by Elein Fleiss and Oliver Zahm from 1993. The purple style is created by engaging a selection of images and distinctive yet simple layout. The laid-back, uncomplicated design is an asset that gives the magazine it’s unique visual style. I love the simplistic style of his magazines with minimal anchorage text and cover lines. I love that the photography is the focus of magazine on the cover.

Terry Jones is another graphic designer whoes style I admire. He is the editor for the well known fashion and music magazine i-D. He too takes a simplistic approach to his graphic design products which is the style I wish to mimic in my magazine. Overall, his unconventional graphic-style and subject matters have been massively influential in the magazine and advertising industries
