According to the Travel Weekly newspaper, Myers reported that summer travels were the
highest on record in 2013. He mentioned that even though the economy recovered slightly,
consumers still spent their money at higher prices. For example, according to John Lovell,
passengers paid too much airfare in Europe for their booking summer airlines. Because their
expectations for customer services were greater, they became less concerned about the economy
during the travel. Especially, gas prices did not come down although consumers drive their cars a
lot. Furthermore, according to the “ASTA’s Summer Hot Spots Survey”, Italy, Spain, France, and
the U.K. popped up “as the most popular international destinations for family travel, followed by
Mexico, Hawaii and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic” (Myers). In short, consumers did not
really care about spending money as long as they enjoyed summer vacations. Many American
consumers felt more optimistic although the economy was getting stronger. Even according to
the Ameritrade’s survey, “78% of those polled said that they would vacation this summer, with
26% planning to spend more money on their summer travels this year than in the last five years”
(Myers). Thanks to those consumers’ spending, Europe business also got bigger because they
demanded more airlines, fuels, and cruise trips. Anthony Cheng predicted that the 2016 Summer
Olympics and next year’s FIFA World Cup soccer tournament will get a lot of bookings for
hotels because families would want to have quality time in leisure travels and look for new and
affordable vacations during the summer months.
Not only in Europe, but also in America, the US passengers could have full flights when
airlines for America were recorded as greater access to the improving economy. “In its annual
summer forecast, Airlines for America (A4A) today predicted that from June through August,
U.S. airlines will carry an average of 2.24 million travelers globally every day” (Heimlich 131).
Travelers took airlines and traveled both domestically and internationally. Internationally, last

summer’s records of passengers were 26.3 million, but it was expected that 26.8 million
passengers will travel next year. However, like the Travel Weekly article were concerned, costs
for airlines may be challenged by being higher. The author reported that fuel expenditures for the
U.S. airlines were 7 percent higher than in 2011. Therefore, according to John Heimlich, the
airline industry needs to make improvements for customer services, in order to overcome the
financial loss (131).
