1. China’s Manned Space Engineering Program
1. China’s Manned Space Engineering Program
In September 1992, Chinese government made a decision to implement the manned
space engineering project and prescribed a “Three-step Strategy” of development
1. China’s Manned Space Engineering Program
• The first step is to launch a manned spaceship, set up primarily integrated
experimental manned spacecraft engineering, and carry out space
experiments.
• The second step is to make technology breakthroughs in Extravehicular
Activities as well as space rendezvous and docking of the program, launch
the space lab, and provide a solution for space utilization of a certain scale
with man-tending on a short-term basis.
• The third step is to establish a space station, and provide a solution for
space utilization of larger scale with man-tending on a long-term basis.

1. China’s Manned Space Engineering Program
It is planned that around 2020, China will build a space station. Core
Module, Laboratory Cabin Module I, Laboratory Cabin Module II,
Spaceship (SZ series), and the Cargo together, will compose the whole
space station system.
2. GESSA (CSU)
GESSA (General Establishment of Space Science and Application, Chinese Academy of Sciences) was founded in 1993. On behalf of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), it participates the China’s Manned Space Engineering, acting as an organizer, coordinator and integrator of the Space Utility System of China’s Manned Space Engineering. Institutes and universities inside and outside CAS have been involved in the Space Utility System.
2. Introduction of GESSA
Chinese Academy of Sciences recently made the organization GESSA a legal person status, and it has a new name:
Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization,
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CSU, CAS)

5. Utilization Planning for the
China’s Space Station
- 3rd step
• Since 2009, Under the leadership and organization of Chinese
Manned Space Engineering Office(CMSEO), GESSA began to
organize the utilization planning for the China’s Space Station.
• Hundreds of space utilization proposals suggested by more than 70
universities and institutes were received.
• Hundreds of research projects are chosen to be the candidate ones
now.
• A series of facilities and platforms were considered as the
infrastructure to support the experiments in different discipline of
space utilization.
