RESEARCH ON GOSPEL MAGAZINES

Page 2: Research on gospel magazines

From the research that I done on music magazine I found out that they all follower the same codes and conventions as a normal magazine. The only difference that I found it the gospel magazines is not just about the music but also about the religion and the faith in which the music originally came from. They not only incorporate the gospel music but the also incorporate things about the church and what is going on in today’s society unlike many other music magazines. One thing that I also found ion common in most of the gospel magazines is how the main image sets the tone of the magazine. The magazine is all about the image as that is what sells the magazine. Gospel magazines all tend to be very simple in terms of choice of colours and layouts and all seems to incorporate the religion as well as the music in the magazine.

Here is an example of a gospel magazine that I found. I realised that gospel magazines is all about the main image as that especially in this case is what sells the magazine. The main imagine is overlapping the masthead which could indicate the importance of the famous gospel artist on the cover, it could also indicate how popular with their audience that even with half the masthead is covered they will still be able to recognised the magazine. Tis magazine also fits with the codes of convention of a normal magazine. This magazine contains a skyline something very common with gospel magazines as the creator likes to inform the reader of the latest things upcoming. It also has a main headline which relates to the main image of Fred Hammond sitting peacefully and relaxed. That picture could be chosen to be the main image as readers could interpret it as a reflection of the type of music the magazine represents –happiness and relaxing . There are also other cover lines that relate to the magazine and the layout is not busy but very simple. The choice of colours are very consistence and at first glance you automatically would assume that this magazine is for a more mature audience partly due to the layout.

This masthead of this magazine is a direct indication of the genre of this magazine. It is bold but simple which could indicate how straight forward the magazine is and what it stands for. This magazine followers the codes and convention of a normal magazines. The main image is an image of a famous gospel singer she is laying down smiling at the camera indicating she is happy and sending a warm vibe off to the audience. You also have headlines that not only relate to gospel music and industry and the Christian religion. There is also a skyline that can inform the reader what else is inside the magazine and bar code and price to inform the reader of the price. The layout of this magazine is very straight forward and clear, the colour scheme complements the main image as the colours match with the image of a gospel artist. One thing that I noticed of the magazine is how everything is consistence in terms of the choice of colour, the text size and the chosen front this indicates that the creator of the magazine took their time to think about the magazine and what it consistence of. Lastly the magazine is simple, unlink other genres music magazines, gospel magazines always seems to be kept simple and very straight forward. At first glance you automatically would assume that this magazine is for a more mature audience partly due to the layout.
