This bulletin welcomes Peter Simmons from the School of Communication and Creative Industries, to the role of A/Dean (Research) who will act in the role to the end of the year. Researchers Slide Show - Introduce Yourself on Five Campuses

All FOAE researchers are invited to contribute a PowerPoint slide that introduces them and their research interests. The slides will play on a continuous loop at each of five research office roadshow days in August (see below). Many of you will remember the great slide show from the Forum last year click here to refresh your memory.

Your contribution: All researchers have the opportunity to (re)submit a slide which will introduce themselves and their research interests. This is a great way for researchers to introduce themselves to researchers in other schools and on other campuses.

The layout of the slide is open to each researcher – although ideally it will include a personal photo and include details of your research, BUT most importantly, reflect YOU.

Please send your slide to the Faculty Research Liaison Officer – Lisa McLean by the 11th of August. Back to Top

Save the Date! Research Roadshow

Just like Carnivale but with less caravans. The Research Office Projects, HDR and Liaison teams will soon be coming to a campus near you. The aim is to share information, build relationships and get to know your colleagues across other faculties. Pencil in the following dates:

DATE CAMPUS VENUE 23-Aug-17 Orange Conference Room (1001/149) 24-Aug-17 Bathurst Foundation Rooms, CPD 28-Aug-17 Albury Building 751- Room 202 30-Aug-17 Canberra Chambers Pavilion (PACT) 1st Sept 17 Wagga Bangayarra- Room B (151), Convention Centre And keep watching this space for more details.

5RP – like the 3MT only with more slides (and minutes!)

Page 3: RESEARCH NEWS - cdn.csu.edu.au · 2017-07-14  · Research & Graduate Studies Bulletin Faculty of Arts & Education 14 JULY 2017 Welcome to the latest edition of the Faculty of Arts

Have you watched the 3MT and yearned for your pre-graduation days wishing you could take part? Well wish no more, as the 5RP (5 minute research pitch) is for you!

The competition is similar in concept to the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition which is run nationally for PhD students. Researchers deliver a FIVE minute presentation of their current or recently completed research with the aid of THREE PowerPoint slides.

The competition is open to Level A, B, and C academics from participating universities, provided they have an employment contract (continuing or fixed-term) current at the time of the national finals.

The competition is designed to showcase recent research projects. Research presented must be current, meaning either in the process of being completed or published in 2016 or 2017, and will be judged against the six criteria detailed in part six of the guidelines.

Details of heats will be announced shortly and if you’d like more information about the rules or eligibility, please contact Lisa ([email protected])

Census date – Friday 4 August

Attention candidates submitting on or before August census date

August census date is looming. In order to avoid delays in the examination process please ensure examiners are finalised as soon as possible. Although candidates should not know who their final examiners will be they should initiate a discussion with their supervisors early on to identify researchers with expertise in the field who could provide a fair and balanced assessment of the work.

Candidates are also encouraged to state who they would not want as an examiner, for example where they are known to have strongly opposing views, methodologies and/or practices.

The Principal Supervisor is then asked to contact potential examiners and complete the Notification of Readiness to Submit Thesis & Appointment of Examiners form and forward to the Sub Dean Associate Professor Peter Pocock for review.

For any questions regarding the process please contact Leanne

‘Toward a Collective Virtue Ethics’ - Duncan Martin, HDR Candidate, Conference Presentation

The 2017 Australasian Association of Philosophy (AAP) Conference took place on 2-6 July, at the University of Adelaide. At the conference, Duncan Martin, HDR candidate from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences presented a paper ‘Toward a Collective Virtue Ethics’, which forms a significant part of his PhD thesis. In the paper, he sketched out a

novel approach to moral theory, which accommodates the concepts of collective agency and collective virtue.

Page 9: RESEARCH NEWS - cdn.csu.edu.au · 2017-07-14  · Research & Graduate Studies Bulletin Faculty of Arts & Education 14 JULY 2017 Welcome to the latest edition of the Faculty of Arts

Duncan says: “Overall, the conference was a fantastic experience. The environment was friendly and welcoming, and I got the chance to network and exchange ideas with other philosophers from across Australasia. Most importantly, I received valuable feedback on my paper from several people, and attended a number of engaging, high quality talks, on all areas of philosophy.

I was awarded a travel bursary by CSU to attend the conference, and am grateful to Professor Mary Kelly (DVC RDI) and my supervisors Dr Emma Rush, Professor Suzanne Uniacke and Assoc iate Professor Steve Clarke for making this possible.

CSU Philosophy Honours student, Alisha Eade, was awarded an undergraduate bursary by the Australasian Association of Philosophy to attend the conference, which she reported as being ‘absolutely amazing’.”

Duncan’s Abstract : Moral theories are typically concerned with the actions, duties and dispositions that pertain to individual human beings, and the norms that ought to govern the behaviour of said beings. However, this picture of moral theory looks to be incomplete, in one important respect. Moral theories of the sort described find it difficult to explain the behaviour of certain, suitably -constituted collections of individuals (i.e. collectives). In this paper, I sketch out an approach to moral the ory, which tries to address the behaviour of certain collectives. In so doing, I suggest that the actions of said collectives can be explained in terms of virtues and vices.

We want your say - what HDR student body would you like?

We are looking to develop a CSU Higher Degree Research (HDR) student body.

This body could allow HDR students to raise any issues (for example, about policies, facilities or resources) and voice their opinions through a formal reporting structure. It could also help organise social events.

A HDR Student Committee or Association – what’s the difference?

CSU HDR Student Committee:

Would represent HDR students through a formal reporting structure

Would be required to follow formal procedures set by the University in regard to minute taking, meetings and reporting in a timely fashion

Would be formed of representatives elected by the HDR student body

Would have issues raised directly first, before they go to either the CSU Student Senate or the CSU Research Committee for formal discussion

Very formal in nature and would not provide a forum for HDR student interaction or social events

Would need formal University approval before it could be established.

CSU HDR Student Association:

Couldn’t formally represent issues raised in the HDR student community but could provide a forum to discuss issues

All HDR students would be invited to be members (membership would be optional)

Members would elect a leadership group to help organise the association, run events and engage with other areas of the University

Could help connect the HDR student community through social events and networking opportunities

Less formal in nature with an aim to provide a positive, supportive HDR environment

Relatively easy to establish.

Page 10: RESEARCH NEWS - cdn.csu.edu.au · 2017-07-14  · Research & Graduate Studies Bulletin Faculty of Arts & Education 14 JULY 2017 Welcome to the latest edition of the Faculty of Arts

If the HDR Association is the more attractive option and receives strong engagement and participation from the HDR student cohort, it could provide a platform to develop a formal HDR Committee later down the track.

We want your say.

There are two options for how a HDR student body can be established and we need your help deciding on the structure.

CSU HDR Student Committee

or

CSU HDR Student Association

For more information about the differences between a Committee and an Association, and to help us decide which student body to create, please take this short two minute survey.
