In what cases would you want to
use questionnaires?
![Page 6: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
To gain information from a large sample of people
![Page 7: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Examples of questionnaires
• The Census
• The British Crime Survey

What is important when designing a
questionnaire?
![Page 11: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Good questionnaire design...• Easy to understand
• No jargon
• Worded clearly
• Clearly laid out and presented
• Reassure anonymity/confidentiality
• Provide suitable alternative answers
• Phrase questions in neutral terms (leading questions!) i.e. Why do you think sex before marriage is wrong?
![Page 12: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Questionnaires
interview questionnaire
(or structured interview)
self-completion
![Page 13: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Self-completion questionnaires...
Questionnaire given to respondent and asked to complete it
themselves
![Page 14: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
• In person
• Postal
• Telephone
![Page 15: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Interview questionnaires...
• Questionnaire is conducted by an interviewer/researcher
• The questions are read out to the respondent, and the respondent’s answers are recorded by the interviewer
![Page 16: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Strengths and limitations of:
self-completion questionnaires
Strengths and limitations of:
interview questionnaires
![Page 17: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Strengths of self-completion questionnaires...
• Postal and telephone questionnaires – allow for a geographically dispersed sample which can be contacted easily and cheaply
• Cheap and easy to administer
• Respondent can be kept anonymous
• No interviewer bias
![Page 18: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Limitations of self-completion questionnaires...• Postal questionnaires - it is impossible for the
researcher to clarify any questions/instructions that are unclear (validity)
• Postal – low response rate (well below 50%) which affects representativeness
• Telephone – May 1993: it is often the man’s name on the telephone directory, and many ex-directory.
• Illiterate respondents would struggle reading and answering the questions
![Page 19: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Strengths of interview questionnaires...
• Interviewer is able to clarify any questions/instructions that are unclear
• Able to gain data on illiterate respondents
• Reduces problem of postal response rate
![Page 20: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Limitations of interview questionnaires...
• Have to train interviewers• Interviewer bias• Social desirability (both of these impact on the
validity of the data)• More time consuming to conduct• This often means using a smaller sample =
representativeness
![Page 21: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Types of question
open closed
![Page 22: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Open questions...
• Ask the respondent to answer a question in their own words
i.e. How do you feel about recycling?
• This gives the respondent more WHAT?
• Produces what type of data?
![Page 23: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Closed questions...• Only allow a limited number of possible responses
• These responses are often already providedi.e. Daily Monthly
Weekly Annually
• Can be used to gain information on respondent’s attitude towards somethingi.e. Strongly agree Disagree Agree Strongly disagree
• Can be used to rank the responses providedi.e. Rank the following factors in terms of what is most important to you: 1 = most important 5 = least important
• Produces what type of data?
![Page 24: Research Methods Lesson Two: 14 th April 2011. Today.... To explore the use of questionnaires as a social research method By the end of this session you](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051301/5a4d1b307f8b9ab05999aa74/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Today....We’ve looked at use of questionnaires as a social research method
CAN YOU...
• Explain in what case(s) a researcher would use questionnaires• Describe the importance of questionnaire design • Identify the two types of questionnaire used by social researchers• Explain the strengths and limitations of each type of questionnaire
