Research in to the relevant genre – Task Seven

Where Indie began..

Indie is a type of music that originated from the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s.

The characteristics of the Indie genre are artists that are signed to independent record label.

The term indie is an abbreviation of the word independent.

Conventions of Indie music videos

Typically, indie music videos are generally far more surreal and have deeper meanings behind what we visually see.

They seem to dress very casual and almost ‘normal’ and in some ways it could be seen as they don't take advantage of their fame but this is something which fans would find more endearing.

Usually they don't seem to require big budgets and they have an urban feel to them and use there surrounds.

When it comes to editing, a common theme that runs through out the genre is having a filter. These filters are usually cooling, warming or dropping the saturation because with a high saturation and bright colours means it is probably more suited to the pop genre.

What links does it have to other genres?

The indie genre is derived from the alternative rock genre. It then branched out to sub genres such as; indie pop, garage rock, indie-folkand post-punk.

Some examples of indie artists are Bastille, The 1975, One republic, The kooks, The Lumineers, The Arctic Monkeys and Imagine Dragons. Many of these started in the indie scene but some artists such as The Arctic Monkeys and The Script have become more mainstream and more of the pop side of the indie culture.

Evaluation

I think by adopting the idea of ‘normal’ clothing is a key element to the indie genre and I think I will definitely consider it for my costume ideas. Also using a filter to lower the saturation is something that I will do as it is used in almost every

indie/alternative music video I've seen. Also using a natural setting and having an urban feel to it is something to consider as using the studio would make it

become more pop.
