Call for Applications for Global and International Studies Initiative Visiting Scholar Program ($3000) Deadline: Monday, January 14th 2013.
This is a call for applications to the GISI Visiting Scholar program. The Global and International Studies Program is a three-year, SSHRC-funded St. Thomas University initiative which is designed to promote global and international studies at STU through a program of major research grants, conference travel support, and the promotion of visiting scholars
Important Notice: SSHRC’S New Grant Management System (GMS) and Common CV (CCV)
SSHRC has launched a new electronic grants management system (GMS) that is expected to streamline and simplify the submission process for both applicants and partners. The new portal for all external users will provide a single point of entry for all of SSHRC’s interactions with applicants, reviewers, committee members, institutions and partners.
The system will be used for applications to the Insight Development Grants February 1, 2013 deadline competition. The use of the new grants management system also requires adoption of the new Canadian Common CV (CCV). All participants in the Insight Development Grants will be required to provide information pertaining to their CCV when submitting their application to SSHRC through the new grants management system.
Please note: Use of the new Grants Management System and CCV applies only to the Insight Development Grants at this time. Additional funding opportunities and programs for SSHRC, including the Canada Research Chairs program, will be phased into the system in 2013. It is anticipated that all SSHRC applicants will be using the CCV by the end of 2013.
If you had an account in the old CCV website (as opposed to a SSHRC generated CV), you can access the new CCV by using your previous username and password. However, the following need to be done in the “Account” section when you log in for the first time:
• Change your password (if desired) to meet the new security guidelines. • Add two reminder questions and answers that you will be asked if you ever forget your username or password in the future. • Verify all your CV data. CV data was migrated, wherever possible, from the old to the new system. You need to inspect each section and field to make sure that the data was properly migrated. Any missing or wrongly formatted data will have to be corrected by you. For your convenience, the old CCV application will be available until further notice for you to retrieve any data.
There will be workshops in the new year (in addition to the one held December 13th 2012) on training for us of the GMS and CCV systems. Please let the ORS know if you are interested in attending one, to help determine interest.

Current funding opportunities include: Connection Grants Insight Grants Insight Development Grants Partnership Grants – Letter of Intent
SSHRC Connection Grants Created to support events and activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives, these events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage on research findings of value to those participating. Events and outreach activities funded by a Connection Grant may often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects potentially eligible for funding through other SSHRC funding opportunities. Connection Grants support workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes or other events or activities that facilitate:
disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary exchanges in the humanities and social sciences;
scholarly exchanges between those working in the social sciences and humanities and those working in other research fields;
intersectoral exchanges between academic researchers in the humanities and social sciences and researchers and practitioners from the public, private and/or not-for-profit sectors; and/or
international research collaboration and scholarly exchanges between researchers, students and non-academic partners from other countries.
SSHRC partnership grants provide opportunities for Canadian and
international businesses to work jointly with researchers in the social sciences
and humanities and with other partners.

SSHRC Insight Development Grants Internal Deadline: January 18, 2013 Insight Development Grants proposals are expected to respond to the objectives put forward in the call for proposals for the Insight program. The objectives of the Insight program are to:
build knowledge and understanding from disciplinary, interdisciplinary and/or cross-sector perspectives through support for the best researchers;
support new approaches to research on complex and important topics, including those that transcend the capacity of any one scholar, institution or discipline;
provide a high-quality research training experience for students;
fund research expertise that relates to societal challenges and opportunities; and
mobilize research knowledge, to and from academic and non-academic audiences, with the potential to lead to intellectual, cultural, social and economic influence, benefit and impact.

SSHRC Partnership Grants – Letter of Intent Internal Deadline: February 1, 2013 The Partnership Grants – Letter of Intent description is now updated for the 2013 competition and available on the SSHRC website HERE. Partnership Grants provide support for new and existing formal partnerships over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities. Note that partnership proposals focused primarily on partnered research training initiatives may now be submitted to the Partnership Grants funding opportunity under the Talent umbrella program. Partnered research training initiatives seek to support the creation of innovative approaches that enrich research training experiences for students and postdoctoral researchers while facilitating their transition to academic or non-academic workplace settings. Applicants interested in applying must follow SSHRC’s Guidelines for Partnered Research Training Initiatives. The federal budget, as noted in the 2012 Economic Action Plan, announced an increase of $7 million per year to SSHRC for industry-academic partnerships to commence in 2012-13. As a result, SSHRC encourages applicants to involve partners from the private sector, including industry associations, in their partnership. SSHRC Welcomes Applications Involving Research-Creation Recognizing the importance of research-creation in the social sciences and humanities, and the expertise of artist-researchers, SSHRC is integrating research-creation as an eligible activity across its Talent, Insight and Connection programs.
SSHRC defines “research-creation” as a creative process that comprises an essential part of a research activity, and fosters the
development and renewal of knowledge through aesthetic, technical, instrumental or other innovations. See Definitions of
Terms for more details.
Beginning with the October 2012 Insight Grants competition, applicants will be able to request support for projects involving
research-creation. Eventually, research-creation activities will be eligible for support through most of SSHRC’s funding
opportunities, with newly launched competitions adding “creative outputs” to their evaluation criteria as an option for
evidence of expertise.
Applicants whose proposals involve research-creation will have the opportunity, in the CV portion of their applications, to
provide a link to a website showcasing their creative outputs or research-creation achievements.

New Brunswick Innovation Foundation Research Assistantships Initiative Internal Deadline January 11th 2013 Balancing the demands of research work requires many different kinds of support. Whether it’s organizing data or performing technical tasks, funding from our Research Assistantships Initiative [RAI] can put your best students to work for you. Provided together with the New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training & Labour, the RAI is beneficial for both professors and the students. In 2012, NBIF awarded $600,000 in research assistantships.

New Brunswick Health Research Foundation Update: The New Brunswick Health Research Foundation is pleased to announce a change to the application deadline for the Operating Grant program. Instead of December 15 each year, there will no longer be a deadline. Applications will be accepted at any time. This change ensures that peer review from all national agencies can be accommodated within the program without unnecessary delay. Details are now available on the website at www.nbhrf.com/funding-programs.
1) Research Workshop Support – New Brunswick Health Research Foundation The Research Workshop Support fund is to assist in capacity building by way of financially supporting a workshop organizer by funding or partially funding a workshop. The workshop must be one with tangible outcomes addressing health research subject matters.
2) NBHRF New Investigator Grants Intended to support researchers who are new to the health discipline in New Brunswick. Grants are up to $60,000 per year for up to 2 years, 50% of which may be used as a teaching release.
3) NBHRF Establishment Grants
Designed to attract outstanding health researchers to the province by providing funding to their initiating organization to help establish independent health research programs in the province. Grants are up to $60,000 per year for up to 2 years, 50% of which may be used as a teaching release.

NBHRF’s board of directors has approved new eligibility requirements for several of its funding programs. Funding program descriptions on the website now reflect this change.

The online proposal development resource offers general advice that is applicable to grant writing beyond the specific funding programs of
European Research Area (ERA)-Can: Promoting Canada EU Research through the European Framework Programme (FP7) ERA-Can encourages and facilitates Canadian researchers and research organizations to collaborate with European researchers under the Seventh Framework Programme. By connecting with European researchers, Canadians can increase the quality of their networks and the impact of their resources and projects.
