Read Through Your Research
Ask yourself:1. What is my research question and what
questions do I want to find answers to? 2. What are the most important ideas I want to
cover in my paper? 3. What background information will readers
need to have? 4. How might I best organize the information? 5. What conclusions (inferences) do I expect to
draw?
Highlight, Annotate information

Example Intros that got 3/10
How do psych theories relate to the book Alive? One thing may be that the book uses many theories that are displayed throughout the book. For example Sublimation. According to psycholyabout.com “ sublimation is a mature type of defense mechanism where socially unacceptable impulses or idealizations are consciously transformed into socially acceptable actions or behavior, possibly resulting in a long term conversion on the initial impulse.” I chose this for an example because throughout the expedition Parrado wanted to keep walking even through the pain and with it being unsafe. Instead I think that Canessa and himself stopped to get rest to continue the next day.

Example Intros that got 5/10
Nando Parrado and the rest of the survivors did whatever they could, however they could, to survive. The survivors would have done anything that they could to ensure that they would make it out alive, including eating their fellow friends that had died on the initial impact of the crash. These boys spent seventy two days in the Andes surviving on nothing but the flesh of their friends, sleeping in the fuselage huddled up trying not to move and hurt the people near them. By looking at different survival theories, one sees that Nando Parrado is actually a hero, which is a surprising idea that is complicated by the fact that he could not think rationally given the situation he was in.

Example Intros that got 8/10
At some point in someone’s life there is always a downfall. But somehow they try to get out of it. What the Andes survivors did was not just a downfall, it was a complicated point in their lives that they will remember forever. By looking at Freud's theories of defense mechanisms many of the survivors went through a stage of denial, repression, and regression, but many can see that the leader of the survivors, Nando Parrado, showed leadership compared to the other survivors.

Anxiety gets the best of us in our lives everyday. Stressful
situations are something we can’t avoid, no matter how hard
you try. You may think your life is stress free but you are
probably in denial, which leads into the next point. Everyone
handles stress differently. These are called Defense
Mechanisms. Stress and anxiety can happen at anytime. It can
range from waking up late for work or experiencing a plane
crash in the mountains. What if you survived that plane crash?
Now your survival instincts would kick in and that anxiety level
would be at the max. In 1972, a group of Uruguayan boys from
a rugby team were flying to Chile over the Andes Mountains.
They ended up crashing deep into the mountains. It took 72
days before the survivors were found. It was a living hell for the
passengers, and they changed as a whole. By looking at
defense mechanisms, one can see that the passengers handled
stress differently, resulting in personality changes.
