ENT:
Smooth Sailing Independence will allow those diagnosed with ASD to
learn how to complete everyday tasks and life skills independently. The
facility forms a space where anyone can feel at ease and able to adapt
to the training rooms that prepare them
for real-world experiences. Change is difficult to deal with, so im
plementing routines, organization,
and sensory items benefit those who are becom
ing independent adults. O
nce the techniques and skills are taught, the individuals with ASD should be able to function on their own to the best of their ability.

RESEARCH:
Location - 3%
of children living in New Jersey were
diagnosed with ASD in April of 2018. In Ocean County,
there were about 2,500 cases. This number has tripled
in the last 14 years and will continue to rise as the population increases. O
nce these individuals grow up and graduate, they need help preparing for their future as they start to live m
ore independently.
Sensory Accomm
odations - Colors like soft blues and earthtones create a calm
ing effect rather than a bright red that could cause agitation. Lighting should not be too bright, therefore dim
mable settings
will be available throughout the space. Sensory overload can lead to distress, so the sensory room
will have item
s such as a weighted blanket, vestibular swings, bean bags, and noise cancelling headphones to help with relaxation. O
thers may need m
ore stim
ulation, so a mini tram
poline and fidget toys allow their brains to becom
e energized for the day.
