Summary of findings •  Integrity, decisiveness, strong communications and listening are

key leadership qualities •  Churchill remains the archetypal leader •  Different leadership qualities are demanded by different roles

•  Strong communication skills is the top quality for political leadership, decisiveness for business and energy for sport

•  Cameron is ahead of the current political leaders on the more salient qualities except for listening •  There is no significant change to these scores since first asked a year ago

•  ‘Everyday’ leadership attributes are similar – though listening matters more •  Older people regard leadership as more rare than younger people do

•  4 out of 10 think their friends/colleagues would describe them as a leader

Methodology What did we do? •  Three online polls with members of the public assessing leadership

qualities and evaluating current leaders •  Two focus groups with the public •  Two focus groups with opinion leaders •  Initial depth interviews with opinion leaders We conducted three polls using the Populus Data Solution’s online omnibus on:

•  19th – 21st August 2011 •  21st-23rd October 2011 •  29th June-1st July 2012 Data were demographically weighted to be representative of the UK adult population.

•  Churchill consistently ranks among the top five on the most important qualities – having integrity, being decisive and being a great communicator

There are significant gender, age and class differences in experiences of leadership

•  In the workplace: •  Women are less likely to have experienced “strong, effective

leadership at work” than men (50%/62%) •  And there is an even bigger gap between DEs and ABs (46%/67%)
