Increasing women’s participation in Australian Research Council grant processes

The Australian Research Council is currently seeking views on three proposals to

strengthen women’s participation in Australia’s research workforce through increasing their

involvement in ARC grant processes.

Page 3: Research Bulletin and our last Bulletin for 2019. In this edition · 2019-12-09 · CV by close of business Monday 25 November 2019. ... Thursday 05 December 2019 Monday 16 December

The ARC has developed a discussion paper (attached). You can read more about the

proposals here: https://www.arc.gov.au/news-publications/media/media-

releases/increasing-female-participation-research

Proposal 1

• To improve women’s participation, the ARC proposes a specific target of 50 per cent

of DECRA applications from women by 2023 (for the round commencing funding in

2024) with an interim target of 45 per cent by 2021 (for the round commencing

funding in 2022).

• The requirement that at least 50 per cent of applications be from women will be

implemented at an institutional level, rather than for individual disciplines.

Proposal 2

• Women currently comprise 44 per cent of the ARC College of Experts but the

distribution is uneven depending on discipline.

• The ARC proposes a target of equal representation of men and women on the

College of Experts by 2023 and the Selection Advisory Committees by 2025.

Proposal 3

• The ARC provides annual statistics to each eligible organisation on its participation

and success rate by gender across the National Competitive Grants Program

(NCGP), compared to the results for all universities and their relevant cohort (if

applicable).

• The ARC proposes to publish statistics on participation and success by gender for

all eligible organisations on its website.

If you would like to provide input into La Trobe University’s response to these proposals,

please provide your feedback on any of the proposals below to Dr Natasha Weir, the

SAGE Athena SWAN Program Manager, by Friday 22 November at

[email protected]

In particular, The University is seeking feedback on:

• Whether the proposals are feasible

• Whether there are any impacts or perverse outcomes of the proposals

Page 4: Research Bulletin and our last Bulletin for 2019. In this edition · 2019-12-09 · CV by close of business Monday 25 November 2019. ... Thursday 05 December 2019 Monday 16 December

• Any other suggestions for how the ARC can support early career women

researchers, improve women’s participation in the ARC assessment processes and

increase women’s participation and retention in the research workforce more

generally.

Alternatively, if you would like to provide a response to the ARC as an individual, you can

click here to complete the survey.

Please also contact Dr Weir ([email protected]) for further information.

Applications open for Tracey Banivanua Mar Fellowships 2020

In 2018 La Trobe established a fellowship program to ensure staff who have demonstrated

potential to be our future research leaders and who have major care giving responsibilities

are able to maintain their career momentum and be supported to fulfil their research

potential. The fellowship is named in honour of Tracey Banivanua Mar, a much-esteemed

member of the Department of Archaeology and History who sadly passed away in 2017,

cutting short a stellar academic career. Find out more about the fellows who were

appointed in 2018 and 2019.

The University proudly supports gender equality and inclusivity. This is outlined in the

2018-2022 Diversity and Inclusion Plan and Gender Equality Blueprint. We are also a

SAGE Athena SWAN Bronze accredited institution.

We recognize that care giving responsibilities can severely interrupt, delay or otherwise

constrain academic careers, and that it is those who identify as women and gender diverse

parents who primarily face these barriers.

The Tracey Banivanua Mar Fellowships are part-time or full-time positions for up to three

years, to enable eligible researchers to develop or re-establish their careers where they

have been interrupted or delayed by child bearing, child rearing or other care giving duties.

By providing funding at a critical time in the careers of high potential academic staff, the

Fellowship aims to reduce the impact of career breaks and/or intense care giving

responsibilities on research productivity.

The Fellowships are open to current La Trobe University staff on casual, honorary,

sessional or fixed-term employment, have been a primary care giver in the past five years

and have faced career interruptions. The goal of this program is to help increase the

diversity of the staff in university leadership positions, so we particularly encourage

applications from researchers who are women, or who identify as transgender, gender

diverse and/or non-binary.

For more information and to submit an applications, please access the position

Invitation: Innovation Event

We all agree that in a dynamic and uncertain context the evaluation of the impact and

responsibility of your innovation is a hard task. Responsible Research and Innovation

describes research and development processes that take into account effects and

potential impacts on the environment and society.

Page 12: Research Bulletin and our last Bulletin for 2019. In this edition · 2019-12-09 · CV by close of business Monday 25 November 2019. ... Thursday 05 December 2019 Monday 16 December

The Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor Industry Engagement warmly invites you to attend a

talk by Professor Xavier Pavie from ESSEC Business School on the topic of:

Understanding innovation and how responsible innovation should shape our future.

• Date: Thursday 28/11/19

• Time: 3.00 – 4.30pm

• Venue: Conference Centre, TEC1, Research and Innovation Precinct (Building

RD1 on campus map, ref K10 -

• Afternoon tea will be provided.

Join us to hear Professor Pavie explain how responsibility is part of innovation. Innovation,

by nature, gives birth to organisational development and in an increasingly global

economic context innovation has to be at the core of any business strategy. At the same

time, the race for innovation in the world today raises new questions. These questions

mostly stem from the impossibility to forecast the result of the innovations: will they be

successful or not?

The questions innovation raise are also about its consequences on all of society, not only

on the economics. The results of innovation can stretch to the environment, to society and

to social topics. Accordingly, responsible-innovation must consider all consequences and

articulate relevant responses according to different topics.

Xavier Pavie is Professor at ESSEC Business School, Academic Director

Grande Ecole Asia Pacific, Director of the iMagination Center and Research Associate at

the IREPH (Research Institute in Philosophy) Université Paris Ouest. His research activities

have, since 2008, addressed the notion of responsible innovation. In 2011, he was in charge

of defining responsible innovation with the support of an international network of universities

as part of a project sponsored by the European Commission. He has published numerous

books and articles in management and philosophy, both academic and for a wider reading

audience. He is the author of a thesis on the reception of spiritual exercises in contemporary

philosophy and continues to regularly publish on that topic. Xavier Pavie is among LinkedIn

Research Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities Grants

Do you require large research equipment or facilities? Now is the time to start planning

your submission for an ARC Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) grant.

The scheme provides funding of between $150,000 per year and up to 75 per cent of the

total direct cost of the eligible budget items, for large-scale infrastructure, equipment and

facilities, which can be shared between higher education organisations and also with

industry.

LIEF grant applications are to be submitted to the ARC by 1st April 2020, however,

preparations for an application should commence at least a year prior to their submission

in order to identify and develop partnerships. Researchers should first discuss their needs

with the Manager, Research Infrastructure. Further information: click here.
