Research and Extension Annual Report 2016

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Despite the many challenges in 2016, the R and E sector continued to excel in the

various activities it set to achieve for the year. A total of 71 research studies/projects

were completed, 40 research articles were published in refereed Journals and 226

researches were presented in various fora within and outside the country. Twenty six

(26) researches were also recognized in the different RDE activities in international,

national, regional and institutional fora.

The R and E sector also initiated the conduct of the 1st University Student

Research Congress held on June 17, 2016 at the Northern Philippine Root Crops

Research and Training Center. Thirty nine (39) researches of students were presented

during the activity. The research papers were selected during the College Research

Congress conducted by the different colleges/institutes. Winning papers awarded cash

prizes and certificates during the Student Recognition Program.

As part of the RDE mandate of the university, faculty/researchers were able to

package 85 Research and Development projects and studies that were submitted to

different national and international funding agencies.

Sixteen (16) Utility Models applications were submitted to the Bureau of Patents,

Intellectual Property Office for registration while 42 creations/ compositions were

registered for Copyright to the National Library of the Philippines. Fifty three (53)

publications were also registered and applied for ISBN/ISSN.

As part of capability building, researchers and staffs attended various trainings,

seminars, and workshops for this year.

On extension services, 5 technology transfer projects were implemented and 7

technologies were generated and commercialized out of various researches. More than

10,000 individuals have benefitted from the 183 seminars/ trainings/ writeshops/

information dissemination activities that were conducted by the different sectors of the

University.

Meanwhile, the university maintains its linkages with different Government and

Non-government organizations through the implementation of RDE programs and

projects.

The IPR Office was able to submit forty two (42) creations/ compositions in the form of manuals, books cinematographic works, guidebooks and researches for copyright registration to the National Library of the Philippines.

Sixteen (16) Utility Model applications were submitted to the Bureau of Patents, Intellectual Property Office.

Development (BSU R4D) column every Thursdays in the Sunstar Baguio daily newspaper . The MOA was signed

witnessed by Dr. Carlito P. Laurean, BSU VP for Research and Extension and Dr. Grace T. Bengwayan, BSU Board

Secretary. The column started to be published on July 21, 2016.

BSU conducts a two-day training on Good Practice Options in Climate Change Adaptation in Agriculture and DRRM

Planning reiterating the good farming practices from soil analysis to the optional choice of pesticides. The activity

was made possible through the Climate Change Project which is supported by the World Food Programme and is

implemented by BSU. Around 70 farmer-participants, 9 experts of diverse fields from BSU, and staff from the host

LGU attended the training held at the Buguias Town-Social hall on August 4-5, 2016.
