DAVIESS COUNTY TEST PLOTS PURPOSE: To provide reliable data on the yield potential of the brands that are best suited for this area. Through these plots we attempt to provide educational information in an unbiased and scientific form to the producers of the area. PLOT LOCATION: Variety trials were implemented in all areas of the county. Plots were located to the west, south, and east of Owensboro, representing various soil types, planting dates, and rainfall amounts. COUNTY-WIDE PLOT FORMAT: To increase the comparison of a variety from one plot to another, we developed a plot design that required each plot to follow the same plan. In the plan we required that the check be placed after every three varieties so that we could make a reliable adjusted yield calculation. An adjusted yield calculation was figured using the surrounding check yields as a basis. Also, to allow the check variety to be evaluated, the third check in each plot was calculated and adjusted on an individual basis and the results enclosed in parenthesis.

To allow producers to gauge the dry-down ability of the hybrids, we have included the maturity days of each one.

2015 Crop Year in Review

There is always weather risk in agriculture. The most difficult aspect is that while weather forecasting technology is as good as it’s ever been, we can only predict a few days out of what actual weather will be like. This unknown we constantly deal with is the greatest challenge in terms of planning and implementing field work activities. In reality, if we could predict weather weeks and months in advance, it would remove crop rotation from cropping strategy and replace it with targeting crops to the productive capability of the fields based on forecasts. That technology seems far away but there may come a time when we have a better handle on the weather. Until then, stay in a crop rotation pattern, hope for the best and prepare for everything else. The years following the terrible drought and heat of 2012 have been kind to farms in our area. Both 2013 and 2014 provided growing season rainfall which resulted in high yields across the county and 2015 brought weather which continued the trend. In fact, there were cases of too much water and subsequent crop loss but if you pause to consider, 2015 may have been nearly perfect in terms of weather timing. It provided the highest yield possibility, without the risk of early season stand loss or late season harvest loss. January started the year off right. Most of the month was clear with bright sunshine, and following a dry 2014 fall and early winter, fields had dried out significantly. Many made observations of minimal subsoil moisture and absence of water flowing from tile drains during a period of the year when it is usually running. As the month passed by with no rain or snow, the discussion shifted to the seriousness of the lack of subsoil moisture relative to the time of year. February continued with more of the same dry weather but wetter conditions were in the forecast. Some chose to apply the first wheat nitrogen application a little earlier than recommended to have it on if fields should happen to become muddy. The forecasts were correct when temperatures dropped to the coldest of the winter and a significant snow few across the area during the third week. Schools were closed nearly a week and a half as the temperatures remained low and crews were challenged to clear the roads. The remainder of the month would continue to be cold but the days were getting longer as the calendar turned to March, just in time for another round of substantial snow at the end of the first week. Significant March snowfall is unusual but did melt quickly due to the longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures. It also replenished subsoil moisture which is critical for meeting crops water requirement later in the summer. The late winter snows presented challenging conditions for the cow calf producers who normally deal with snow in January, but there were few reports of animal health problems caused by the mud. Late March provided some drying days which allowed for a limited amount of field work to get underway; some spraying and tillage were completed and there was ammonia applied the final days.

Page 8: Research and Demonstration Plotscompleted and there was ammonia applied the final days. Unlike previous years March would not present the opportunity to plant corn in Daviess County

Unlike previous years March would not present the opportunity to plant corn in Daviess County and for the most part, neither would April. Field activities were stopped for nearly the entire month due to frequent and consistent rain. The Ohio and Green Rivers rose flooding fields near the rivers and pushed Panther Creek and its tributaries out into fields throughout the county. Wet conditions continued through the third week of the month. Patience began to wear thin as people were simply on standby waiting for the rain to stop, but it did just in time to get planters and ammonia toolbars out in the fields during the final days of April. While behind, the year was far from lost. The first half of May provided near perfect planting weather and most of the corn was planted in just two weeks. The stress of getting nearly nothing done in April was all but forgotten as corn rapidly emerged in the warm May weather soil, resulting in nearly perfect stands which would pay off at harvest. Wetter conditions returned for the latter half of May, dragging out soybean planting and tobacco setting into the middle of June for many farms. Hay producers were faced with the difficult decision of second guessing weather forecasts to cut hay hoping it would not rain or face further harvest delay and the possibility of lower feed value. Following the wheat vomitoxin challenge of 2014, everyone was concerned for the wheat which flowered during the wet weeks of May. June is a month we think of as the beginning of summer with less rain and warmer temperatures than May, initiating the period of rapid growth in grain and tobacco crops. The beginning of June 2015 could be described that way but the rest of the month would provide lots of rain and no increase in temperatures. The end of the third week delivered heavy rainfall to certain areas, overwhelming some tobacco fields and creating headwater flooding along creeks. The rain would ease during the next week but saturated conditions would persist during the rest of the month. Wheat harvest was a drawn out process with rain and cool temperatures slowing the dry-down. However yields were surprisingly good with little effect from the March snow or wet conditions during flowering. Rain also interrupted soybean herbicide applications, allowing Daviess County to realize how widespread waterhemp has become. Many fields simply could not get sprayed before it became too large to kill. Seed dispersal at harvest will result in countywide waterhemp distribution in 2016. July would continue the same frequent rain, cool temperatures, and heavy flooding in certain low-lying fields. Rain with wind during the first week of the month sent already saturated tobacco fields to the wilting point and the result was a loss of a few hundred acres of tobacco in the county. In addition to the loss of corn and soybeans from flooding, Daviess County realized a rare and significant crop loss from weather in July. While upland corn and soybeans were soaking up the rain, farmers along the river and creeks were battling the rising water. Near the end of July southern corn leaf rust was confirmed in the area.

I - 6

Page 9: Research and Demonstration Plotscompleted and there was ammonia applied the final days. Unlike previous years March would not present the opportunity to plant corn in Daviess County

August came in with normal activities – tobacco harvest and wrapping up soybean spraying. Very cool temperatures persisted and the southern corn leaf rust exploded. While corn had a nearly perfect first two weeks, which allowed uniform stands and growth, June and July provided excessive rain, cool temperatures, and cloudy days which had many growers questioning if the maximum yield would be seen. Also, consistently wet conditions on soybeans since planting had created favorable conditions for sudden death syndrome during the August pod fill period. September and October passed quickly. There was discussion all year comparing the weather similarities of 2015 with the wet 2009 season when summer rains continued creating harvest challenges and all but preventing corn from drying in the field. Fortunately, 2015 was quite different and May planted, southern rust infested corn dried in the field with moistures below 20 percent found as early as Labor Day when several farms began harvesting. The next 7 weeks would remain cool and dry, allowing tobacco harvest to progress at a rapid pace while corn and soybeans were harvested with no interruption. The 2015 crop was a bit of a roller coaster ride that had a good ending. Virtually no corn getting planted in April had producers fearing excessive harvest drying expense which didn’t come to pass. The wet end of May had wheat producers fearing head scab and poor grain quality which didn’t happen. The wet June instilled fear of widespread sudden death in soybeans and the cloudy summer and southern corn leaf rust instilled fears of significant yield reduction in corn neither of which happened.

All in all, Daviess County had a great crop and if it had not been for the acres lost to flooding in July, it may have been the best overall crop ever. Clint Hardy Daviess County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources
