The Theme

Perform. Record. Enrich. Share.Opening up and publishing processes in performance creation In processes where various discipline areas interact and a variety of methods and media come together, issues may arise in regard to representation, different types of data visualization, the limitations of available technologies, and overflow of data. When it comes to articulation of body- based knowledge through video annotation, how are tools being currently applied and for what purposes?

The RESEARCH ACADEMY 2018 explores video and film recordings with the aim to render body-based performance practices more explicit and sharable through documen- tation. This includes experimentation with new video annotation software, innovative moving image recording (e.g. 360 degree film) and digital animation processes. Providing context for this year’s lab is the Research Video practice-based research cooperation and software development project of the Institute for the Performing Arts and Film and Cast/Audiovisual Media degree program- me. One of the key aims of Research Video is to generate processes and prototypes for the publication of results of artistic research in performance.

The Frame The colloquium takes place in the frame of the RESEARCH ACADEMY 2018, an international platform based at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). The RESEARCH ACADEMY aims to develop artistic practices and foster research through an interaction between fellows, faculty members, the artistic community, and the general public. It seeks to explore artistic strategies of contemporary performance practices in order to ask how they speak back to the cultural and economic environment, the political landscape and social values.

Twelve participants out of different fields in the performing arts and film are working intensively during seven days with an expert faculty from dance, video, and practice-related theory:

Dr Scott deLahunta is currently a full-time Senior Research Fellow with Deakin Motion.Lab, Deakin University (AUS) and Visiting Academic at the Centre for Dance Research, Coventry University (UK). With Florian Jenett he is Co-Director of Motion Bank @ Hochschule Mainz University of Applied Sciences/D.

Suzan Tunca is dance researcher and performing artist currently responsible for the research activities at the International Choreographic Arts Center ICKamsterdam (NL). She is a teacher/coach for artistic research at the BA dance at CODARTS Rotterdam, first cohort member of DASresearch THIRD! and PhD candidate at PhDArts Leiden University (NL).

The ColloquiumThe colloquium gives insight into the working process of the RESEARCH ACADEMY 2018, with the aim to open up the lab-situation of the RESEARCH ACADEMY to the public and share some outcomes of the preceding working days. It offers the opportunity for the participants of the workshop as well as for dance practitioners and scholars to engage with a thoughtful talk on issues related to time-based representa- tion of artistic practice and research.

The sharing will be enriched with inputs by guest speakers looking into articulation of body-based practices, potential struggles with data overflow, issues of representation, and current research on annotation in the performing arts with special focus on contemporary dance. The colloquium places value on practice-related theory and is addressed to all practitioners in the field of dance, theatre, performance and film/video.

Speakers: Dr Bernd Kräftner and Rebecca Stancliffe Moderator: Marisa Godoy

Bernd Kräftner is an artist and researcher. He has realized numerous transdisciplinary research projects on and at the interfaces of science, society and art. He is a co-founder of the research group “Shared Inc.” (Research Centre for Shared Incompetence) and teaches at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (A) at the Departments of Art & Science and Digital Art.

Rebecca Stancliffe is a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is currently completing her PhD at the Centre for Dance Research at Coventry University (UK). With a background in Labanota-tion and movement analysis, Rebecca’s research examines the use of video annotation for the articulation and transmis- sion of movement knowledge and thinking.

Marisa Godoy is a dancer and choreographer. She is currently research associate in the project Research Video at the IPF/ZHdK (CH) and a PhD candidate at the Centre for Dance Research at Coventry University (UK).
