Overview

The overall goals of this course are mastering the concepts of Algebra and

improving problem solving and communication skills. We cover topics such as variable expressions, integers,

methods for solving a variety of equations, linear functions, statistics,

geometry and graphing.

NOTEBOOKS

You must keep a math notebook. Notebooks will be checked at the end of

each chapter or unit (20 points each).

In addition, students are required to keep a binder. Binders will also be checked at the end of each chapter or unit (point

totals will vary).

HOMEWORK

All homework is graded and collected (10 points each). No late assignments will be

accepted. However, each student’s lowest homework score will be dropped

at the end of the grading period (one per term).

In addition, missing homework will result in disciplinary action (per SASD’s board

approved math homework policy).

PROBLEM SOLVING

Problem solving will be an ongoing focus throughout this school year. A brain

teaser, PSSA open-ended problem, or PSSA Review will be given each week

(point totals will vary).

GROUP WORK/PROJECTS

Group work/projects will be completed at least once per grading period. Group work and projects will be collected and

graded (point totals will vary).

TESTS/QUIZZES

Tests will always be announced (100 points each), but quizzes may not be

announced (point totals will vary). Pre-Tests may be given before the chapter to

assess prior knowledge and will be graded based on effort (10 points each).

EXTRA CREDIT

Many bonus opportunities may be offered throughout the year including (but not limited to) unused Forgiveness Pass items, doing extra problems on your homework, class reward for spelling

out EAGLES, etc.

Math Tutoring

Individual or small group tutoring is available every Monday and Wednesday after school from 3:00-4:00 in Room 211.

Tutoring is also available through the Guidance Office. Please see your guidance counselor for information.

Absentee Policy

If you miss class, it is your responsibility to get the notes, complete the assignment and study the material covered during

your absence. Assignments and missed tests must be made up within 3 school days. Failure to do so may result in a

zero score. In addition, you are expected to take tests the day they are given if you are in class, even if you miss the review.

Test Corrections

For tests worth 100 points, test corrections are available to those students who earned a 79%

or less on the test. Students have 5 school days from the day the tests are returned to

come to after-school math tutoring to correct any problems missed on the test. During the corrections, students may use their textbooks, binders and notes to aid them in correcting the problems. Students may earn back up to ½ the points missed on the problems. However, the

maximum score for corrected tests is 80%.

Trips Out of the Room

Students will only be allowed 3 trips out of the room per grading period. This includes

requests to go to your locker, restroom, nurse, office, etc… At the beginning of each term,

you will receive a Forgiveness Pass that you will use in conjunction with your planner. This pass must be presented to me for your request

to be granted. Lost passes will not be reissued. Furthermore, the Forgiveness Pass may be turned in at the end of the term for 1

bonus point for each trip not used.

Calculators

You will be allowed to use calculators at all times during this course starting with

Chapter 2. You are strongly encouraged to purchase and bring your own

calculator to class. Any scientific calculator will be acceptable. Wal-Mart and Radio Shack have a wide selection

of suitable calculators for $ 10 - $25.

Electronic Devices

Classroom use of Personal Electronic Devices shall be at the discretion of the teacher (per SASD’s new PED policy).

Unless instructed otherwise all PEDs should be off and stored out of sight.

The use of PEDs during class shall be deemed a privilege and not a right!
