Background Information: A plane takes off from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, California but crash lands 1000 miles off course so the rescue crew has no idea where to search for them. The plane split in two over the island and the passengers got separated into two groups. The leader of the cockpit section which we first meet is a man named Dr. Jack Shephard. The leader of the tail sections name is Ana Lucia. The cockpit survivors are sitting outside of the wreckage when they hear a loud noise and see trees shaking. They named this the smoke monster, a guard for the temple on the Island. In the future, the two wreckage groups find each other and come back together as one group. Thinking that they are the only ones on the island, they quickly learn that they are not alone and that there are natives to the island. The leader of the native’s name is Ben Linus, aka Dr. Linus. He is a master manipulator who has a tumor growing on his spine who plans to manipulate Jack, the leader of the survivors, into performing surgery on him.

CharactersJack Shephard: A spinal surgeon from LA. Survivor of Oceanic flight 815 crash. Leader of the survivors, very strong willed and very smart. In Australia bringing his dead dad back to the USA for his funeral.

Kate Austen: Very convincing and brave, always up to help others. She murdered her father because he was abusive to her mother, and fled after telling her mother that she killed him. In Australia to hide from the US marshal.

Sayid: A republic guard communications officer who was also a torturer. Very smart and not afraid to hurt someone to get something he needs. He was in Australia because the CIA asked him to help detain his old college roommate in exchange for his ex-lovers whereabouts.

John Locke: A paraplegic who magically gained feelings in his legs again after the wreck. He is a hunter and the main provider of food for the survivors by hunting boar. He was in Australia for a walk about.

Artifacts:

Smoke Monster: Early on in the show we see a giant monster tear apart the forest while trying to get to the beach. Then we see it kill the captain, and later learn that it is just killing off all of the impure candidates to be protector of the island. The smoke monster is a guardian for the Temple that is on the Island.

Handcuffs: Found in the forest by Walt, the handcuffs start a whole fight over who was in them and they also helped end fights later on in the show.

Observation one: Pilot: Part 1

1:00 minute-Opening scene is someone's eye

opening laying on the ground in a bamboo forest. Voices can be heard off in the distance as the man laying down is seen struggling to get up. When he does get up, he takes off running towards the screaming and finds people running all over the place trying to help other people from the plane crash. The man immediately goes towards the crash and starts pulling people from the wreckage. He starts doing CPR on people and bringing people to safety. There is a pregnant lady on board and she is having complications with contractions and the man hollers at a guy to come sit with her and take measurements of how far apart her contractions are. We learn that the man's name is Jack and that he is a Dr.

9:00 minutes- After everything is settled down and

everyone that can be saved is saved, Jack finds a sewing kit and stumbles off into the forest where he takes off his shirt and tries to sew up his side but he can’t reach it. Then a lady comes out of the forest and he asks her if she has ever sewn anything. She takes a look at his side and doesn’t think that she can sew him up because she’s scared she’ll hurt him. He asks her nicely to do it and she does. She asks him how come he’s not scared and he says, “The very first time that I was doing a spinal surgery, it was on a girl that was just in a wreck, I ripped open her Dural sack the end of the spine where all the nerves come together, membrane as then as tissue and so it ripped open. Nerves just spilled out of her like angel hair pasta, spinal fluid spilling out of her and I, the terror was just so crazy so real, and I knew I had to deal with it. I only let the fear in for 5 seconds, five seconds and that was all. I sewed her up and she was fine.” This was something that Kate, the lady sewing him up, used multiple times.

15:30: The survivors are sitting around a

fire after the crash talking and taking things in, wondering why no one has come for them yet. Everyone's taking the time to get to know each other and all of a sudden they hear this loud noise coming from the forest and see trees shaking. Everyone stands up and wonders what it could be and they start worrying. We have a flashback to the plane after this and see Jack sitting on the plane and they hit turbulence, he starts talking to his neighbor to keep her calm. all of a sudden the plane starts shaking uncontrollably and the airbags come down for them to put on. They do and then were back on the island the day after the crash. Jack, Kate and Charlie, go into the forest to find the cockpit.

29:00It starts raining while they’re in the

jungle and they find the cockpit and climb up it to the cockpit to find the transceiver so that they can maybe contact someone to get them. While they are in the cockpit, they find the pilot who is still alive somehow. He tells them what happened and the smoke monster appears again. The pilot climbs out the window and gets snatched up by the smoke monster. Jack Kate and Charlie take off running away from the cockpit and get separated. Kate hides in between some trees, Charlie gets lost and Jack dives into some bushes. They all find each other again and find the pilot hanging from a tree all bloodied up.

Observation 2: Pilot: Part 2

1:00- Charlie, Kate, and Jack are walking through the forest back to camp trying to get the transceiver to work and Kate asks Charlie why he was in the bathroom of the cockpit and he says because he was throwing up. We then get another flashback to the plane where Charlie is sitting in his seat, tapping his fingers on the chair when the flight attendant comes up to him and asks him if he’s okay, he gets agitated at her and then she walks back and talks to the other flight attendants and Charlie then gets up and tries to go to the bathroom and the attendants follow him back to the bathrooms. Charlie then locks himself in there and starts to do drugs in the bathroom of the plane. Just when he starts to get high, the plane hits turbulence and he drops his drugs in the toilet.

7:00-Walter, who was also on the plane when it crashed, is out looking for his dog in the forest when he finds a pair of handcuffs. His dad tells him that he wasn’t supposed to be in the forest and brings him back to the beach with the handcuffs.

8:00- They’re at the beach where we see Sayid, an Iraqi, and Sawyer, a con man, fighting because he thinks that Sayid crashed the plane and the cuffs were his. Kate announces that they have found the transceiver and says that it’s broken but asks if anyone can fix it. Sayid volunteers and Hurley, aka Hugo, comes over and talks to Hurley about life.

13:00 Sayid, Kate, Charlie, Sawyer, Boone, and Shannon, go on a hike after Sayid fixes the transceiver to hopefully gather a signal to send out a distress call so that they can be gathered. Jin, a Korean is catching sea Urchins and making food for people to eat and he walks around asking people if they would like to try it, he walks up to Claire, a pregnant girl and she takes the food and tries it, and after a couple of seconds she feels her baby kick and gets super excited because she hasn’t felt the baby kick since the crash.

16:00Jack, the Doctor, is about to pull a piece of shrapnel out of a man to try and save his life, so he asks Hugo to go and find any prescription he can in hopes that if they guy Pulls through the surgery, he won’t be in too much pain. Jack asks Hugo to sit in and be his assistant during the surgery but Hugo tells Jack that he’s not so good around blood. Jack pulls the shrapnel out and asks Hugo to hand him the gauze strips and Hugo looks at the blood and passes out.

Jack’s obsession to help people- Dr. Jack Shephard is constantly trying to help everyone he meets in one way or another. He is the first one that we see truly take any action about helping save lives after the crash and throughout the series we will continue to see how hard he works to save lives and help others while he’s losing his own life. Kate obsession with the US marshal, trying to help people but it never really ends up in the good after- After the crash, Kate is constantly checking on the US Marshal even though he was bringing her back to the US to put her away in prison for murdering her stepfather. She murdered him because she was trying to take care of her mom who she watched be abused by him constantly but instead it ended up with her mother snitching on her and hating her for the rest of her life. She also tried helping the US marshal end his suffering by getting someone to shoot him for her but that ended up in a punctured lung and more suffering. Not a normal Island- The fact that this many people survived a crash from that far up in the air is not common at all. The second is that when they found the pilot, he told them that when they turned back around to land in Fiji, they were thousands of miles off course. Then the first night on the island there is some giant monster in the forest tearing down trees and making loud noises. Also, when they were searching for a signal from the transceiver and they had a polar bear chasing after them in the middle of a jungle, that’s not something you would find on a normal island.

Analyze

Propose:This show depicts what life would be like on an island after a plane crash if no one knew anyone and everyone was scared. Someone would take the role of the leader and the others would follow. It show’s how there could be more secrets to this world than we really know, and that something like this could happen but maybe minus some of the more out of this world concepts like a moving island or a smoke monster. This paper shows the first few episodes of how life would be after a plane crash and how everyone would have to come together to survive or they would all die.
