The Ngee Ann Poly Technical School, located in Singapore, has three students who are

working towards using the heat from an air conditioning system. The students have

created an idea that will use AC units in regards to a heat recovery system. Other

appliances including hot water tanks can be involved in the process as well.

The students have created an item called a Domestic Waste Heat Recovery System.

The unit has a heat exchanger which is used to absorb wasted heat from the air

conditioning system as well as unused heat from a hot water tank. The result of this

process is that an air conditioning system that was run for eight hours will create

enough captured and then repurposed heat to warm water of 110 liters at a rate of 40

degrees C. This is enough hot water for a small family of four.

This means that residents would be able to use this product and save money via for

heating water in the home. The product is only in prototype, so as developed, the

system could be something that greatly benefits the home in regards to energy usage

and wasted heat.

Why Is This Product So Relevant?

By using such a product as designed by the students, homes would be able to avoid

wasting money and heat. The heat that is wasted by AC units has an impact on the

environment. The heat from the unit can actually raise the degrees of the environment,

especially in congested areas such as a city. As air conditioners are used to control the

heat, they actually create more when in close quarters such as downtown areas. We

think this is cool as far as repurposing ideas in HVAC go.

transfer mechanism from the cooling unit to the hot water heater. The unique system
