In Europe you will find our buildings in Norway,Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Luxembourg,Spain, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Poland,Bosnia Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo,Latvia, Albania and Italy. France especially hashundreds of our industrial and agriculturalbuildings including 3 hangars and workshopserected in 1921 for Louis Blériot the famousaviation pioneer. We have been making Aircraft

Hangars to jumbo sizeever since. In 1940 wesupplied several dozenemergency hospitals tothe British ExpeditionaryForces, some of which we

still keep discovering in use for all sorts ofpurposes. All over Germany we have erectedmany large, modern, factory buildings. In Russia,we shipped two large sports centres to Moscow,and at Uralkali in the Ural Mountains, we provideda large brick factory and supervised the completeerection and cladding and shipped 5 cold storebuildings Ro/Ro via Denmark on German andRussian trucks to St Petersburg. The same day afully sound proofed generator building wastrucked out on Polish vehicles to Zawierce inPoland. We recently sent 64 trucks to the CzechRepublic with a complete factory building of184,000 sq ft for making capacitors. This wasclosely followed by several industrial buildings toLatvia and Kazakstan.

In North Africa our structures are in Egypt,Sudan, Ethiopia, Libya, Somalia, Tunisia,Algeria and Morocco. Even in the little Moroccanport of Larache, some 50 miles down the Africancoast from Tangier, there are 18 of our buildingsused as hangars, go-downs and customs houses.

In the Gulf States of Kuwait, Oatar, Bahrain,Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujeira, Sharjah and Ras AIKhaimah, countless of our buildings are in use aswarehouses, aircraft hangars military or policeworkshops, and offices. We designed and made anew Emirates Airlines hangar and Air CargoTerminal for Dubai International Airport. We alsodesigned and made a 48m clear span and two 18m, 16 sided domes fora Majlis (Parliament)building in the Gulf, aswell as the big PoliceMotor Workshop, VIPcar park and manyschool buildings inOatar. In Oman wesupplied the Land Rovershowroom and workshop, several Governmenttraining centres and warehouses.

In Saudi Arabia our buildings have even foundtheir way into the Holy City of Medina where thereis a bus terminal complete with cleaning plantand office block, erected by Egyptian contractors.At Jeddah there are many of our portal structuresand a large multi storey building which containsoffices, flats and a shopping centre. At Riyadhthere are many industrial buildings, in particular alarge glass reinforced cement panel factoryamounting to 323 shipping tonnes sent onwardsby truck from Jeddah and successfully erectedwithout problems by local contractors. On theEast Coast at Damman there is an impressiveshopping complex whose Arabic arches are a wellknown and much imitated landmark, with other

subsidiary buildings, as well as a governmenttraining establishment incorporating 12 of ourbuildings amongst the first to be imported intothe Kingdom.

In Iraq our portal structures have reachedBaghdad, Kirkuk and Basra as oil company

workshops, wellheadstores, generatorstations and offices.Northwards to theCaspian Sea Port ofBaku in Azerbaijanmade the completestructure for new BMW

showroom. Cross the border to Iran and you willfind another of our buildings in that ancient city ofTabriz. In Jordan we supplied and supervised theerection at Wadi-el-Yabis of one of the biggestHorticultural distribution centres in the MiddleEast.

In Yemen we have supplied over 30 substantialbuildings for use as factories, cold stores,workshops and port transit sheds mainly forMinistries and Public Corporations in the Southand in the North we have provided many largefactory buildings and workshops as well asagricultural buildings for chicken hatcheries, dairyproduct stores, a baby-feed factory, a gas bottlingplant at Taiz and a pharmaceutical factory withwarehouses in Sana'a.

In Eritrea, on the Red Sea, a number of ourlattice portals were used to build a largeagricultural school in 1934, while in Ethiopia, onthe single-track railway line from Addis Ababa toDjibouti, the steel framework and cladding forevery one of the 22 railway stations was suppliedby us in 1936. This line, in 1984, carried 1,000tonnes of our steel buildings for 20 large grainstores to help with famine relief at Nazareth inEthiopia.

We were back in Djibouti again 47 years laterto erect a generating station, bottling plant andassociated buildings in the Gulf of Tadjourah. Ourengineer lived in a mud dwelling with a Frenchcrocodile hunter, an Ethiopian and an Eritrean, noair conditioning but several scorpions and snakes.There was almost no water but they managed withbeer.

In 1990 we shipped a large number of producestore buildings through Djibouti destined forSudan, 25 for Gezira, II for Rahad, 8 for new Halfaand 3 for Suki. For Kenana Sugar Company ofKhartoum we supplied two large warehouses andassociated buildings.

We have been to Somalia building warehouses,offices and workshops at Berbera and Mogadishu

for the United Nations Relief Organisation.Berbera was the home of the Barbary pirates of200 years ago and, amongst other things a basefor RAF Spitfires during World War 2. In Kenya we

made the workshop at Kifaru Camp for the army.Almost every trip overseas has its interesting

times, like being jailed for opening our own boltcrates, having fried cucumber for breakfast, lunchand dinner every day and shaving with Coca Cola,as well as being held up by bandits and by thePolice!

In Sri-Lanka we supplied and supervised theerection of 6 rice stores for the Paddy MarketingBoard, starting on sites at Maragahawewa (in theWipatu National Park) and Huruluwewa nearAnuradhapura, that fascinating ancient capitalcity and religious centre. The work wasinterrupted on the site at Adampan for a shortperiod because of a thoughtless chap who wadedacross at low tide from India and brought cholerawith him.

Further up the Indian sub-continent weshipped a new paint factory to Bangalore. ForBangladesh we supplied 18,000m2 ofwarehousing for the Port of Chittagong in spite ofthe efforts of sundry typhoons to disrupt thework.

Our warehouses, factories and assembly halls

have been erected as far away as Rarotonga, thattiny paradise isle in the South Pacific 1,633 milesN.E. of New Zealand and 12,434 miles fromLondon Docks, while 1,400 miles to the West awarehouse and market building is to be found inFiji and a further 900 miles west in NewCaledonia there are trading stations andwarehouses supplied by us so long ago we can'tremember when.

During 1988 wedesigned and made thesteelwork for the two180ft spans of the 360ftNgalimbu bridge in theSolomon Islands,financed by British Aidfrom the OverseasD e v e l o p m e n tAdministration andordered by the Crown Agents. They also ordered alarge workshop and crane for Santo in theVanuatu group of islands (New Hebrides). Ourfirst two buildings for Santo were for the FrenchOil Research station in 1965. They were erectedwithin 14 weeks of leaving our works. In 1987/88we shipped 2 big workshops complete withoverhead cranes, for the P.W.D.

New Zealand has 395 of our buildings,including a small country~town church and inAustralia our structures can be found near Perth,Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

In the Falklands Islands in the South Atlanticour buildings are to be found at San C a r l o sand four at Port Stanley.On Adelaide islandnear the south pole(Antartica), you will finda maintenance building.Even those Islands ofTristan de Cunha, StHelena and Ascensionhave sent us orders for cold stores. At Las Palmasin the Canary Islands the cinema and nearbymarket buildings were made by us.

At the Brazilian port of Bahia there is a soapfactory, at Santiago in Chile, just a few thousandmiles off, a transport depot, recently joined by alarge Naval aircraft hangar at Vin̂a del Mar andthe new Presidential Flight Hangar and two largehangars at Fuerza Aerea de Chile, Santiago for theChilean Air Force and at Rio Verde a warehouse.At Georgetown, Guyana several large warehousesand sugar stores. lust over the border inSuriname we supplied a large workshop for themining industry. In Central America, on the Pacificseaboard of Costa Rica near Punta Arenas, there

are factories, while in Belize further north wesupplied the Civic Centre and Auditorium in BelizeCity and many other industrial and agriculturalbuildings as well as the bridge over the Rio Bravoand another for the Southern Highway.

In the Caribbean hundreds of REID structureshave gone ashore in the Dutch Isles of Aruba andCuracao, the Cayman Islands, GrenadaAntigua, Montserrat, Jamaica, TrinidadBarbados, Dominica, St Kitts, St Lucia, StVincent, The Dominican Republic, Cuba, Haiti,Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and theFrench islands of Martiniqueand Gaudeloupe.

In spite of the efforts ofseveral Caribbean hurricanes,one of which blew away most ofthe bananas in Jamaica in 1951and deposited a large cargofreighter on the wharf inKingston, our structures are stillthere and many more have been shipped since.

For New Providence Island in the Bahamaswe spent many happy hours in 1986 designing,making and finally supervising the : erection of ahuge 86,000 sq ft brewery for Heineken so thatthey could refresh the parts that other lagers don'treach. They must have been pleased because-

they asked us to provide another in theCameroons to help refresh the inhabitants ofthose parts too.

For the Turks & Caicos Islands we designedand made the steel frame for a new bank.

Since then we have shipped many otherbreweries and distilleries to Africa, including 3 forCoca-Cola.

Further to the North, amongst the pink coral ofBermuda, 774 miles from New York and 3,445from London there are numerous large Reidwarehouses and garages. The Police Barracksincludes no less than 5 of our buildings.

On Sao Tiago in the Cape Verde Islands a fewhundred miles west of Senegal, we supplied thestructure for yet another brewery, complete withoffices, to brew Carlsberg lager.

In West Africa our buildings are almosteverywhere, from Mauritania, Senegal, Liberia,the Ivory Coast, Benin, Dahomey, EquatorialGuinea and Cameroon right down to the Congosand Angola. For Zambia we made a hovercrafthangar. A multi-storey hotel building at Banjul inThe Gambia is helping the tourist trade whilstfurther up the river Kanifing are a variety of storesand warehouse buildings. We also supplied all thesteelwork for the new fish and meat market. A lotof our work is to be found in Ghana, including theterminal building at Kotoka Airport. Eastwards,Uganda, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritus andthe Seychelles in the Indian Ocean account for atleast 200 of our buildings between them. At theport of Beira in Mozambique there is a newwarehouse of 10,000m2 designed and made by us.We supervised the erection work too.

In Nigeria, school buildings at Kano, cinemasat Los, a distillery in Lagos and a tyre factory atWarri etc., cover thousands of square metres. Forthe Nigerian Air Force we designed, made and

erected at Kainji 400 miles north of Lagos,a large hangar of 4,500 square metres

with a clear entry width of 90 metresfor C130 Hercules transport aircraft.Although there were many technicalintricacies involved in erecting such a

huge building way up country, the mosthilarious and memorable matters which

occupied our erectors was bargaining for localmeat and taking care not to annoy the largefamilies of baboons that came from the wildlifereserve to watch. They seemed keen to becomeengineers.

We even contributed to the road system nearby,between Wawa and Kaima, by supplying severallarge multi-span beambridges using no less than17,000 welded 24mm shearconnectors for the compositedecks.

At Freetown in SierraLeone we constructed theframework for the CentenaryBuilding and a large clinic atKenema as well as many warehouses andfactories.

At Gao Airport in Mali there smaller buildingsand the old air route across the desert to Algeria

was pyloned in 1935 withanother 36, roofed in redand white glazed enamelsheets and spaced one every14 miles. In Lesotho, that land lockedRepublic (surrounded bySouth Africa) a ring road hasbeen built right around the

country for which we designed, made andsupervised the erection of the multi-span hot dipgalvanised double lane steel bridge at theMaphutsapeng River Crossing.

In mainland China we provided the Sun Oilplant at Shekou in the province of Canton ofwhich we also supervised the erection, followed

by five large, port warehousesin 1985 at JiuzhourHarbour, Zhuhai in the province of Guangdongand more recently steelwork for a ceramic factorynear Shanghai.

In 1992 we shipped 3 buildings for duckprocessing plants at Qing County in HebeiProvince. At Huaibin County and HuangchuanCounty in Henan Province there are two morebuildings for feed mills at Qing County and

Huaibin County. We also supervised the erectionat all the sites. In Hong Kong we supplied a dyeprocessing building and in Macau an AircraftHangar for Air Luxor.

In Myanmar (Burma) we built a rice storeamongst the temples of Rangoon. In Vietnam, onthe rubber plantations of Am-Nhon-Tay and Pho-Thanh near Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), are latexstores, and to the Philippines we shipped a largecable making factory.

Around the sparkling blue Mediterranean, inCyprus, Turkey, Malta, Greece, Gibraltar,Sardinia and Corsica there are factories, coldstores, packing sheds, garages, cinemas,warehouses and multi-storey apartment blocks ofour manufacture.

In Iceland, that fascinating island of themidnight sun and hot water springs, we providedmany dock warehouses and herring factories andcold

stores at Reykjavik as well as several agriculturalbuildings.

In the United Kingdom much of our productionhas been used to build complete industrialestates, aircraft hangars, warehouses, footballstadiums, supermarkets, garages, boatsheds,agricultural buildings, indoor tennis courts, ridingschools, even covers for floating docks, North Seaoil terminal depots and work for the Ministry of

Defence.A few of our buildings are onthe sea bed too. It is reallysurprising how many ships sinkeach Year.Wherever there is anygeography at all we try to getthere One of the mostfascinating jobs we helped to

make was a church for the owners of a vast 2,000peon estate in the back blocks of Venezuela in1937. That Church totalled 280 packages andbales (including a peal of bells and boxes ofcoloured glass) and every one of them went onmuleback over the mountains through the OveidaPass. Finished with a belfry and steeple like aproper Church, it was a proud job needing fivemonth's drawing boardand machine shopwork. There's poetryand romance enoughin structural steel ifyou think of the travelsof our work and anyman who can handle aspanner can erect thebuildings of his choice in whatever far away landit may have pleased him to pitch his tent.

computers in theoffice & worksComputers are used so widely nowadays that they are hardlyremarkable.

What is important is the software. We first started storing non-variable data on magnetic card thirty eight years ago toimprove our design and estimating service. When microcomputers first became available in the 1970s we searched forsuitable software. Finding none to suit our requirements, ourengineers worked for some years to produce their own withthe result that we can now produce optimised structuraldesigns and quotations in 10 minutes instead of 10 days.

What we have today is a system which is unique not only in theU.K. and Europe but in the whole world.

We have continued developing our software to deal with mostof the repetitive, time consuming drawing office detail workand can now operate the latest computer controlled drillinglines and punching and cropping lines in our works, directlyfrom disks programmed in the Drawing Office. This cuts outthe usual three operations of measuring out and centrepunching, known in the old days as “plating”. Drilled andpunched steelwork is produced at a rate so phenomenally fastand with such accuracy as to make the old methods appeararchaic. A beam which a few years ago would take 11⁄2 hours tomark out and drill, now takes about 6 minutes or less - 15times faster and much more accurate.

We CADDED and CAMMED before the catchwords came andour work on developing programs continues apace.

At each end there are two lower buildings; one is the in-feed area 68M span, 38M long and 9.5M to eaves and the other the loading and despatch area 54M span, 40M long and 8.5 to eaves. We erected and clad all three buildings in 16 weeks. We also designed and madethe steelwork. Note the cathedral like interior before the automatic storage and retrieval system was installed. British Aerospace. This was not just another shed foraeroplanes. It was part of a precision built complex for fittingout BAE 146 “Whispering Jet” Airliners and containssophisticated equipment such as four 3.2 tonne overheadtravelling cranes with rails levelled by laser beam to fine limits.A constant temperature heating plant and a fire protectionsystem are built in. The structure also incorporates astructurally independent Annexe with design andadministrative offices and stores. The electrically operateddoors, with in-built personnel doors and patent glazing arefully insulated, and have anemometer controlled cut outs toprevent opening in high winds.

At Bournemouth International Airport (Hurn) this new 85m clear span hangar, which has aclear tailgate entry height of 19.8 metres and a clear mid height inside of 24 metres, is bigenough to take most aircraft flying today. It will be used by FR Aviation in association with theirsister company. Flight Refuelling Ltd, who pioneered inflight refuelling, to convert bigcommercial jets into fuel carrying tankers. The complete design, fabrication and erection wasdone by us as were the civil works including foundations, floor slabs and apron. The cost wasless than some operators pay for annual rent of 747 hangars.

The 8 huge electrically operated rollingdoors on the front which weigh 6 tonnes perslab, were designed made and erected byus. These are the frames of the doors beingclad inside and out and insulated with40mm polyurethane foam.

Each door has its own electric motoroperating the ground wheels through areduction gearbox and chain drive. At thetop of each door there is an electricalpickup system and 4 pairs of horizontalrollers to keep it centred under theconductor rail. All the electro-mechanicalwork was designed, made and installed byus.

Manchester International Airport. This 85 metres clear spanhangar for Monarch Aircraft Engineering is for maintenance ofairliners up to jumbo size. We did the steelwork design, fabrication,erection and cladding of the hangar and its electrically operateddoors and the two-storey office at the side, as well as making andfitting the double glazed aluminium windows in the offices andmain doors.

After only a week on site, the main end columns are up, the King Truss,weighing 138 tonnes including a built-in access-walkway, is assembled ontemporary, pre-positioned steel trestles on the terracing so that cambercan be checked.

It is one day’s work for two 500 tonne cranes and 8 REID erectors to liftand manoeuvre the King Truss into position, and bolt it to the endcolumns using 104, 36mm diameter high tensile bolts.

The restricted site meant building both terraces and the mezzanine loungeinwards from each end, gradually withdrawing the cranes through thecentre.

A few weeks after the start one of the most complex grandstands in theworld designed and built by REIDS, nears completion.

emergency buildingsdefensive structuresWe make steel structures with anti-spalling lining for HARDENEDHANGARS and most defensive and installations.

Expensive aircraft, equipment control centres and personnel can beprotected by REID Hardened Hangars; these can be erected speedilythanks to the rigid steel segmental arch rings attached directly to the anti-spalling skins which in turn serve as formwork for the reinforced concreteroofs. A variety of resistant doors can give protection against all but directhits from large bombs.

The cost of such defensive structures is so small in relation to the value ofthe contents (or the security given by the contents) that several could bebuilt for each installation making target acquisition more difficult.

For security reasons we cannot publish photographs of installations but theseillustrations show the concept. Specific requirements will have to be discussed betweenour military engineers and yours. Please state the type of aircraft or other equipmentand the type of threat to be resisted.

Four buildings of 16 on the samesite supplied for the Italian Armyin KOSOVO as part of the Natopeace keeping operation. Themain contractor was Cogim ofPiacenza, Italy.

Steel buildings have a particularly useful place in Emergency relief operations. We designed, made, shipped and erected these 20 grain stores in 32 weeks from order.We also supervised their erection under difficult conditions.

1. PVC plastisol coated steel(200 micron nominal coating thickness)Plastisol is a 200 micron PVC based colour coating applied over ahot-dip zinc rich coated steel substrate to BSEN 10147. This thickcoating is tough and durable, has good colour stability and weatherresistance and is the most commonly used colour coating forcladding sheet in the UK. It can be supplied with a standardwashcoat or a 100 micron smooth Plastisol coating to the reverseside.

This colour coating is guaranteed by the manufacturer for between11 and 30 years (minimum period to repaint decision) dependantupon application, location and colour chosen. Plastisol is relativelyeasy to clean, repair or repaint when the time comes. Given a regularmaintenance programme, the life expectancy of colorcoat claddingclaimed by manufacturers is forty years or more.

2. ‘Celestia’ by Corus(120 micron nominal coating thickness)A range of 16 metallic colour options, described by Corus as a "mesmerising metallic finish and inspired by the look of metal in theenvironment". As with the Corus HPS200 Plastisol coatings , itsperformance is guaranteed for buildings in Northern Europe by theCorus Confidex Guarantee.

3. PVF2 coated steel oraluminium(27 micron nominal coating thickness)PVF2 coatings (usually 27 microns thick) have an outstanding colourstability and excellent resistance to chemical or solvent attack.Available on steel or aluminium substrates. Recommended primarilyfor sidewall cladding applications, the colour retention makes laterextensions less conspicuous. Good UV resistance and colourstability also makes PVF2 coating well suited to the export businessin hot sunny climates as well as UK applications. Usually suppliedwith a temporary, peel-off, protective film to prevent surfacescratching before installation.Manufacturer’s statement of performance for PVF2 coated steelmaterials state 10 to 15 years to repaint decision.

4. high build polyurethane(50 micron nominal coating thickness )A 50 micron thick (nominal ) high build polyurthane coated hot dipzinc coated steel to BSEN:10142 or BSEN:10147, offering a durablescratch and abrasion resistant colour surface, with a highperformance backing coat to the reverse side. Suitable for use in hotclimates in temperatures up to 120 Deg. C.

A formal manufacturers written guarantee is available on the colourcoating for periods of up to 20 years.

5. polyester coated steel oraluminiumPolyester coated steel has been developed to provide an economicalcladding and roofing material with medium term life for world wideuse. The coating has good resistance to ultraviolet light and heat.

In temperate environments the period to the first maintenance is fiveto seven years. With regular attention the life of the cladding can beextended considerably beyond this. Care should be exercised in itsuse near the sea or in hot, humid environments

6. aluminium - mill finishThis is the natural untreated surface of the metal as it leaves therolling mill. On this surface a thin protective film of oxide forms.This coating unlike iron oxide (rust) which occurs on steel,provides protection to aluminium and inhibits further corrosion

7. aluzinc coated steelThe stucco-embossed texture is obtained by roller embossingaluminium sheet to obtain an irregular raised pattern finish. Stucco-embossing retains the metallic finish of aluminium but gives adiffused reflection. This reduces glare and avoids sharp reflections.

8. aluminium- ARS pre-paintedPre-painted aluminium sheet has a pleasing satin and a toughsurface to resist scratch damage and abrasion. It is offered in awide range of standard colours.

9. aluzinc coated steelAluzinc is a zinc/aluminium alloy coated steel with specialcorrosion resistant properties. Comprising: Aluminium 55% - Zinc43.5% - Silicon 1.5%. When new, Aluzinc has a fine spangleappearance which soon weathers to a matt grey natural finish .

Aluzinc is an economic, functional cladding solution, whenaesthetics are not the priority.

10. lining panelLining panel has been specially developed to use as an internal wallor roof lining in double- skinned constructions. It has a steelsubstrate, zinc coated for good corrosion protection and is facedwith a high quality, smooth, dense, white, polyester paint finishgiving a highly attractive appearance that is easily cleaned. Thereverse side of the panel is also painted to give added corrosionresistance which makes the panel unaffected by rain duringconstruction or condensa-tion in use.

11. edge protection of allhot-dip zinc rich coatedsteelCut edges of coated steel will be protected from corrosion by theelectro-chemical action that occurs when zinc and steel aretogether in the presence of moisture. The zinc becomes thesacrificial anode and protects the steel galvanic action. This willalso happen at fixings and wherever the paint surface isaccidentally scratched. In corrosive environ-ments cut edgesshould be painted over.

12. reverse side coatingsAll hot-dip zinc rich colour coated steel sheets are normallysupplied with a light grey backing coat, which gives adequateprotection in most reasonably dry internal environments.Enhanced reverse coatings are available on a special order.

1. shot blastingAll steel passes through our Automatic Shot Blasting plant before fabrication.

2. protective coatingsAll steel before leaving our works is sprayed with High Build Zinc Phosphate primer, to a thickness of at least 75 microns. (Special finishes on request.)

3. hot dip galvanisingAlthough we are able to provide a high standard of shot blasting and almost any paint system to suit the structure, we frequently have specifications which call for Hot Dip Galvanising.This in our opinion, is still the best way of providing long term protection to structural steelwork.It is no more expensive than complicated multi-coat paint systems and, in our opinion, more effective.We have hesitated to issue publicity of this nature before because we thought that the cost of galvanising steelwork would not be acceptable to most clients. However, during the last 25 years there has been an increase in demand from discerning clients, for the tough, lasting protection provided when steel is dipped into molten zinc.If you want ONLY THE BEST then you should have your steelwork HOT DIP GALVANISED.
