Reptiles are animals in the (linean) Reptilia class. Characterized as air-breathing, shelled egg laying, scale skinned, cold-blooded, animals. They fall under the class of tetrapods (animals with or formally known to have 4 limbs)

The study of reptiles is called Herpetology

Page 3: Reptiles

Most reptiles are depicted as vicious or aggressive animals

False, there are more docile reptilia species than aggressive, and aggression is triggered as a defense mechanism. Snakes are constantly feared because the average person can not distinguish the difference between a venomous and non-venomous species

Page 4: Reptiles

Unfortunately docile corn snakes are often mistaken for the aggressive and venomous copperhead species within the southern united statesand are killed right along with them. Corn snakes are a non-venomous species and a very popular species of pet snake for even the beginner herpetologist

The reptile trade industry is a prosperous business whether they are imported from foreign countries or bred right here in America. Most reptiles such as Ball Pythons may have 1-3 eggs, each containing 10-18 babies that are worth up to $70 retail. If bought from a breeder they may be sold for as little as $10 a piece. Breeders commonly sell there reptiles monthly at reptile expos where you can find anything from an exotic frog to an American alligator!

The Majority of snake species consume there prey (mice, other snakes, or reptiles)in this fashion, they swallow prey whole and then digestive acids and enzymes break down and extractits nutrients

Reptiles require elaborate, climate controlled habitats, beginner species usually require a heating element to keep the gradient temperature above or at 75 degrees F and a water source to bask in or provide moisture. More advanced species may require large enclosures, desert climate heating arrangements or periodic misting treatments to keep the enclosure at a particular humidtiy level

An exotic species like the green tree boarequires plenty of limbs to climb on, and frequent daily mist sessions. A species thatrequires such heat and humidity attentioncommonly has an elaborate cage that is automatedto provide its needs.
