One of the world's most visited tourist destinations is the
great Coliseum of Rome, also known as the Flavian
Amphitheater. It is located in the heart of the city of Rome,
Italy. The Roman Coliseum is the most famous monument to
have survived from the classical world. It was built nearly twothousand years ago for the purpose of hosting ferocious
gladiator games. Thousands of men and animals fought for
their lives in the sandy arena. A few gladiators and warriors
found glorythere. Some even found fame and riches but many
more died an anonymous death, providing entertainment for
enthusiasticRoman spectators.
The Coliseum is a large ellipsoid arena built in the first century
CE(common era) under the Roman emperors of the Flavian
dynasty: Vespasian (69-79 CE), Titus (79-81 CE) and Domitian
(81-96 AD). The arena was used to host spectacular public
entertainment events such as gladiator fights, wild animal
hunts and public executions from 80 CE to 404 CE.
Given to the Roman people as a gift from the Flavian dynasty
