University of Greenwich Digital Research Repository:
Greenwich Academic Literature Archive (GALA)
– a joint GRE & ILS initiative
What is a repository?
• A digital repository is a collection of online materials that are managed, maintained and preserved in a central location
• GALA consists of research outputs
– published research journal papers, articles, conference papers
– But may include other research artefacts that assist with dissemination in the public domain
The research process
Goals and objectives
• Create and maintain a centralised digital research repository to promote the research activities of our staff
• Populate the repository with research outputs from 2007-2009 in the first instance, followed by retrospective data
• At the same time adding the very latest research appearing in 2010
Phase oneData collection process• Eight students hired to assist Schools with data
collection, three remain in post
• Continued student assistance until 31st July, 2010

Phase oneData collection process
• Locate research outputs from 2007-08 & 2008-09 via Web of Knowledge & Schools
• Locate other research outputs • Manually create references in Endnote Web
where required for populating the repository with references and full text documents
February, 2010
Phase twoPopulating the repository
Metadata and copyright checks• Material collected from Schools then
proceeds to– checking of reference metadata– publisher compliance
– SHERPA/RoMEO • Authors are encouraged to retain the
copyright to their publications where possible
Phase two Progress on the repository to date• Over 1,600 items are now stored in the repository• Consisting of ‘Live’ items, visible both internally and
externally, and items still 'Under Review' • Diverse range of missing information needed to
make the record live, these include– keywords, abstracts and full references– version of paper (post-print vs. publisher’s final)– conference details and location – peer review status
Retrospective project
Key objectives
• Going forward to be a full text repository• Academic staff to self-deposit research –
ensuring a complete and accurate record of individual research outputs
• Depositing to be seamless with the functionality of single sign-on and access driven through the University’s Portal
External visibility
• EPrints archives are indexed by standard search engines • Twitter page: http://twitter.com/GALAeprints
followers are able to sign up to the latest additions • RSS links are available on most pages with functionality to
embed feeds into websites, blogs and wikis• GALA is registered with directories of repositories such as
OpenDOAR (www.opendoar.org), ROAR (www.roar.eprints.org)
