  • Editorial CommentEditorial CommentEditorial CommentEditorial CommentEditorial CommentIt seems like only yesterday that the globaleconomies were facing total melt down asgovernments rushed to support failing banks inorder to avoid a repeat of the GreatDepression of the 30s. However, it was notyesterday but almost 2 years since the alarmbells started to ring. To their credit, the actionstaken appeared to provide valuable time torebuild economic stability. As the situation was stabilised, so governmentsannounced massive stimulus packages to help business recover anminimise the worse of laying off employees.

My question is - whatever happened to these stimulus packages that theconstruction industry got very excited about? The USA is still waiting forimplementing of the much publicised Transportation Bill worth billions ofdollars to refurbishing or rebuilding hundreds, if not thousands of kilometresof interstate. A grand scheme but the politicians cannot find a way tofinance it and, although it makes very good sound-bites, many fear that itwill never be implemented, which will have serious economic impact on thetrucking industry and the supply chain for many manufacturers.

And it is not only the USA that is reneging on its promises. It is the sameacross Europe where there is little sign of the promises that have gotgovernments elected or re-elected. Here in the UK, the newly electedcoalition government has just put on hold many of the forward thinkingdevelopment packages. Instead of giving companies economic stimuluspackages to provide employment, governments appear to me moreprepared to supply social service benefits from tax revenues..

Interestingly, there are countries that are using the opportunity to fast-track development. India is on target to build 20 km of new highway perday, even though the country is blighted by layer after layer of bureaucracy.China is doing the same but with a less public concern. Quiet simply, if yourproperty is in the way of a highspeed railway track then you had better getout of the way quickly. And although the Chinese government packages areproviding jobs and putting in place high speed road and rail infrastructure, there are signs that the economy may be seriously overheating.

It is not rocket science to see the long-term economic benefits ofinvesting in infrastructure and utility investments, if they can beimplemented without countless millions of dollars being spent in lobbying, committees, evaluations, consultations, often overseen by overpaid andunnecessary quangos together with the traditional cumbersome inter-department, often totally-disconnected, government departments at bothnational and local level.

How many kilometres of roads, fresh water and wastewater distributionlines, power and telecommunications systems could be built for the cost ofholding the increasingly more frequent conference of Government heads to‘discuss the global economic situation’?

The time has come to stop talking and start investing. Thousands ofcontractors, mining and quarrying and manufacturing companies plushundreds of thousands of skilled workers are ready to start work.

Since this construction site, situated in aprominent inner city location, offers no storagespace, an innovative solution needed to be foundto convey the prefabricated concrete elements. With its maximum jib length of 60 m, the agileWOLFF 6015.8clear can be deployed veryflexibly. “A notable feature of this crane is its towersystem, which has a cross-sectional dimension of

just 1.50 m,” says Peter Völker, Managing Director and owner of thecompany

KRANprofis Allgäu GmbH. “This enabled us to erect theconstruction crane without difficulty within the narrow 1.70 by 2 melevator shaft.”

The WOLFF 6015.8clear employed in this construction project isa customized crane with an adequate lifting capacity for therequirements. With a load capacity of 1.5 t at jib lengths up to 60 m,and 8.5 t up to 14.8 m, this compact trolley jib crane is also ideallysuited for small construction sites.

It willhouse modern facilities for temporary andpermanent exhibitions, workshops and offices. The exterior design will follow the line of thesurrounding buildings which forms part of thehistoric Old Town.

The crane being used has a maximum load of 5 t,and can lift up to 1,100 kg at the end of the jib. In Gdansk, the LC5211 has been erected with a 3.8 m wide crossbase, 31.9 m of height under hook, and a jib length of 37.5 m, although it can be configured with a free standingheight of 45 m, and a jib length of 52.5 m.

On the Maritime Culture Centre project , CMM director Dr Jerzy Litwin said: "It is the first totally newconstruction project of the type in Gdansk". The new building will replace 'The Colonial Warehouse', an old part ofthe museum, which turned out to be unsuited as a venue for the new and improved museum. Therefore, thedemolition of that building and the construction of a new and better suited building at the site was consideredessential.

When completed, the Marine Cultural Center will provide nearly 6,000 m² of usable floor space.

LIBLIBLIBLIBLIBYYYYYAAAAAKilometres of trenchingKilometres of trenchingKilometres of trenchingKilometres of trenchingKilometres of trenching A fleet of Bobcat compact equipmentincluding skidsteer loaders equipped withwheelsaw attachments has excavated over 11km of trenches for the LibyanTelecommunication Company. The trenchesare being dug to lay cable in Tripoli, Zawia,Misurata and Gariyan.

Supplied by Tandamira Company, theBobcat dealer for Libya, a Bobcat S250Hskidsteer loader with a WS24 wheelsaw andan S175H skidsteer loader equipped with aWS18 wheelsaw are being used to cut thetrenches. The project is also utilising S130and S150 skidsteer loaders with a sweeperand a BM250 mixing bucket attachment,

which is used to prepare and pour concrete for filling thetrenches. Other equipment used for cable laying includesBobcat E32 and E35 compact excavators, the R30SBackhoe and Bobcat HB0880 and HB0980 breakers as wellas 7/20 and 7/41 portable compressors and breakers fromDoosan Infracore Portable Power.

Working at a rate of 150-180 m/h, the WS24 wheelsawcuts clean trenches 20 cm wide and up to 60 cm deep. Forthe complete process of trenching, cable laying, backfillingand concrete pouring as well as the installation ofinspection chambers, the cable laying teams have beenable to complete up to 500 m a day in ideal conditions. Aninspection chamber has to be installed every 150 m. The

initial cut for the inspection chamber is made with a Bobcat wheelsaw and then excavated using the Bobcat E32 orE35 compact excavator.

Another company that is, literally, hard at work in Libya is Mastenbroek with their HRT trenches which are beingused for heavy duty, large dimension trenching in exceptionally hard rock where the upper-cutting technique, back-to-front trenching technique developed by the company is proving particularly successful.

These hard-rock trenchers are engaged in the modernisation of Libya’s water, gas, electricity ortelecommunications network and have to grapple with the country’s characteristic hard rock conditions whenundertaking excavation. The HRT-25, developed by Mastenbroek, is proving it is more than up to the job. Now with

more than three years oftrouble-free operations in thehot and arid environment theHard Rock Trenchers (HRT)are routinely excavatingthrough rock withcompressive strengths up to,and sometimes exceeding,33,000 psi (226 MPa).

The iconic Soccer City, African calabash pot design, won the prestigious Fulton Awards * for ‘Concrete inArchitecture’ and captured a second Fulton Award forwinning the ‘Building Project’ award.

The roof wetting for Johannesburg’s latest landmark wasauspiciously marked by a downpour and in traditional Africanstyle, dignitaries, contractors and workers celebrated the start ofthe final completion inspections of Soccer City. The 89 000-seater, African stadium was host for both the opening and finalmatches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches. The stadium is thelargest in Africa. It is also the biggest all-seated stadium built forany football world cup event.

The Team from Grinkaker–LTA/Interbeton by Soccer City JointVenture; the client the City of Johannesburg – 2010 Office;principal agent Phumela Africa Professional Engineers and subcontractors DSE, Steeldale Reinforcing and Fixing

Services, Ground Engineering joined the work force in celebrations.

Roger Jardine, CEO of the Aveng Group and its subsidiary Grinaker- LTA,said at the roof wetting, “we are immensely proud of this landmarkdevelopment. Not only does it highlight African design and ingenuity but thiswas achieved with 1 million disabling injury-free man hours – anunprecedented achievement under such tight deadlines.” He proudly addedthat this bares testament to Aveng and its partners’ unrelenting focus onsafety.

Building the stadium required 90,000 m³ of concrete steel, about 10,000tons of reinforced steel, 9 million bricks and 13 000 tons of structural steel. The structure has a double layer of fabric roof and required 32,400 fibrecement panels to complete the calabash-inspired design of the façade.

It has taken some 9,980,000 hours to completethe construction of Soccer City, since the project’sinception in 2007, says Mike Moody, Grinaker–LTAproject director. Grinaker-LTA MD, Neil Cloetesays that the initial bid was to complete Soccer Citywith a simple roof.

The organising committee wanted a meaningfulAfrican design, and it is incredible to havewitnessed the transformation of the site into whatwill be a landmark for the country and the continentat large. Every seat in the stadium has anunrestricted view of the pitch and the grounds, withthe furthest seat 105 m from the centre of the pitch.

There are 193 suites and roughly 2,700 seatsdedicated solely to media, 860 parking bays and

MotivMotivMotivMotivMotivation - ation - ation - ation - ation - ArchitecturArchitecturArchitecturArchitecturArchitectural design descriptional design descriptional design descriptional design descriptional design descriptionThe architectural design of the stadium was selected from a series of concept designs, ranging fromacknowledgement of Johannesburg’s disappearing mine dumps; the kgotla (defined by the tree) of the African citystate; the African map as a horizontal representation, which included the roof as a desert plain supported ontropical trees set within the mineral wealth of Southern African; to a representation of the protea, our nationalflower.

The calabash, or African pot design, proposed by Boogertman Urban Edge and Partners, was selected asbeing the most recognisable object to represent what would automatically be associated with the African continentand not any other. The calabash, or ‘melting pot of African cultures’, sits on a raised podium, on top of which islocated a ‘pit of fire’. Thus the pot sits in a depression, which is the ‘pit of fire’, as if it were being naturally fired. Thepit of fire demarcates the security and turnstile line separating the outer areas and the secure inner areas.

The structural profile of the existing suite levels and upper-tier seating of the existing western grandstand areextended all round to encircle the pitch. The existing lower embankment will be rebuilt to vastly improve the viewlines and comfort of the most popular seats in the house.

The upper third of the existing embankment is to be raised to form a secondary tier, thus turning the stadiuminto a 3-tiered, rather than a 2-tiered, stadium.

The upper embankment and the rebuilt lower embankment are accessible from the lower concourse, which isfed from the podium level.

The two suite levels and the upper tier are accessed via 3-dimensional ramp structures that are containedwithin the façade of the pot. The suite levels also have separate lift and stair lobbies at each corner for dedicatedsecure VIP access.

The pot’s façade is made up of laminated fibre reinforced concrete panels, in a selection of 8 colours and 2textures that make reference to the shades and textures of the calabash. The pot is punctured by open or glazedpanels which create a suggestion of pattern on the façade that comes into its own when the inside volumes areilluminated. The façade is articulated by 10 vertical slots which are aligned geographically with the nine other 2010stadia, as well as the Berlin stadium. These are representative of the road to the final, and it is hoped that, after the

World Cup, the scores of each game at each venuewill be placed in precast concrete panels on thepodium. A visit to the stadium will thus provide onewith a full history of the World Cup and all its scores.

The upper roof, which is cantilevered from anenormous triangular spatial ring truss, is covered by aPTFE membrane in a colour similar to that of theadjacent mine-dump sand. The bottom of the trusseswill be covered by a perforated mesh membrane, thusgiving the appearance of a smooth underslung ceiling. All VIP areas and the stadium management offices willbe located behind the main western grandstand, with adedicated VIP entrance. New change rooms, media

  • work areas, auditorium, and VIP parkingare located within a new basement underthe podium on the western side of thestadium.

The site is directly north of theproposed new Nasrec TransportationHub and pedestrian mall, linking thestadium to the redeveloped Expo Centreto the south.

The transportation hub willaccommodate taxi, bus, and rapid transitservices, thus providing good publictransport links to the precinct and thestadium. A secondary Bus Rapid Transitstation is also proposed on the Sowetohighway to the north of the stadium,

which will further strengthen the public transport links to the stadium.

All of this is to be set in a revamped Nasrec precinct, which will boast new roads, and pedestrian walkways withlighting, signage, landscaping, CCTV, and public amenities.

Structural Design P.D. Naidoo & Associates (PDNA) are the principal structural engineers for the upgrading ofSoccer City. PDNA appointed a German company, Schlaich Bergermann & Partners, as a specialist roof sub-consultant to assist with the detail analysis and design of the roof and façade structures.

The existing stadium, which was first constructed in 1987, consisted of a playing field surrounded byembankment seating, two levels of corporate hospitality suites, and an elevated seating tier on the western sideonly.

The architects for this prestigious project, Boogertman Urban Edge and Partners, in association with HOKSports Architecture, have created, an “African Pot” which will in future be recognized instantly by spectators inevery corner of the world. To achieve this unique look, a structure, circular in shape on plan, was created toenvelope the upgraded triple-tiered concrete seating bowl.

The circular plan format of the pot, which encircles the rectangular seating bowl and field, was selected toensure that all façade detailing could be consistent in plan and section, thus ensuring an easier detailing, manufacture, and installation process. This ensured that the 120 concrete façade columns would be consistent inshape and form. Given that the existing concrete structure was limited in its ability to carry the additional roof loadimposed on it, it was decided by the design team to remove the roof structure from the seating bowl structure andplace the roof structure on 12 off-shutter concrete shafts. These shafts required an ingenious piling solution.

1000+ concrete piles.1000+ concrete piles.1000+ concrete piles.1000+ concrete piles.1000+ concrete piles. On completion, approximately 1,350 piles will have been installed at Soccer City. The forces generated by theconcrete structure and roof mean that exceptionally high loads have been transferred to the foundations, whichhas resulted in the design and construction of some of the most extreme piles ever installed in South Africa. All thepiles and lateral support were designed by ARQ and Verdicon, and installed by GEL.

Whilst many of the piles carry large compressive loads, many piles are also subjected to exceptionally hightension loads. The calabash-shaped façade and the rooftransfer the loads from the roof, down twelve reinforcedconcrete shafts and 120 inclined perimeter façadecolumns, to the piled foundations. Some shaftfoundations are required to resist tension loads up to13000 kN, in combination with sheer loads of 6000 kNand a bending moment of 125,000 kNm.

Due to the limited space, it was only possible to installa maximum of 12 piles per shaft foundation, resulting in

Page 12 Contractors World Vol 1 No 6

One thousand three hundred and fifty concrete piles of varyingdiameter where required to depths of 32 m.

The stadium is design to give all spectatorsand uninterrupted view of the playing field.

  • some piles being subjected to tension loads of 5800 kN (580 tons). Inorder to accommodate the massive loads, the designers decided toanchor the piles 6 m into the sandstone bedrock using dowel barsinstalled through the base of the pile.

In some cases the 1,500 mm diameter piles were installed up to adepth of 33 m, necessitating almost 60 m³ of concrete in a single pile.

The shafts vary in plan from 3.5 m x 5.0 m to 3.5 m x14.0 m, with an average wall thickness of 600 mm.

A huge reinforcing steel content of 460 kg/m³ (approximately threetimes more than normal reinforced concrete) made the placing andcompaction of the concrete extremely difficult. The stiffness of theshafts under varying load combinations had to be determinedaccurately, as this could affect the forces in the structural steel roofstructure.

The design and stiffness of the shafts were further complicated byvarious openings which had to be provided for electrical, mechanical, fire, domestic, and storm water services. All these services weredesigned early on in the process and modelled in 3D by the architectsto ensure that all penetrations were fully coordinated, before thereinforcing was designed by the engineers.

This was required as it was impossible to entertain any late requests for penetrations by the servicesengineers. These shafts are founded on the piled foundations described above, with some piles subjected todownward loads of 1100 tons and upward loads of 580 tons. In addition to the shafts, 16 circular columns of 1meter diameter support the roof.

Large pile capsLarge pile capsLarge pile capsLarge pile capsLarge pile capsIn order to transfer the large loads from the roof, via the concrete shafts, into the tension and compression piles, large pile caps with depths in excess of 4 m were required. The construction of these large bases required carefulplanning, as heat of hydration had to be controlled, and the safety of construction workers, who are often requiredto work beneath heavy reinforcement, had to be ensured. Varying soil conditions on site often required that theengineers had to adapt the design of these bases.

LaterLaterLaterLaterLateral Supportal Supportal Supportal Supportal SupportTo allow access into the completed stadium bowl, three deep tunnels had to be cut with vertical excavation. Thewestern players’ tunnel runs below the existing stadium structure, and has permanent support with a maximumvertical height of up to 10.0 m. The southwest and northeast tunnels have been constructed through new portionsof the stadium.

Due to programming constraints, it was decided to construct permanent lateral support in these tunnels, consisting of soil nails, shotcrete, and mesh. Due to the construction of deep pile caps at the base of the northeastern tunnel, vertical lateral supportheights of up to 13.0 m have beenconstructed.

The existing precast steppings to the westernupper tier were removed, crushed, and recycled asbase layers for the bulk earthworks. All new seatingsteppings are constructed from precast concrete, allmade on site. To reduce the handling time anddamage to precast units, as well as to achieve avalue-for-money product, GLTA/Interbeton elected toestablish an on-site batching plant and precast yard.

  • 20 minutes with:Roger Lindley interviews the newly appointed Vice President for CNH Construction EquipmentEurope.

Henrik Starup-HansenVice President –CNH Construction EquipmentEurope“With just a few months in the position and after many years with Iveco, are youfinding any synergies between commercial trucks and constructionequipment?”

“The business model is very similar– the customers have the same expectations. They look for high performance together with reliability; they also appreciate thateven the best machines will fail at some time or other but the effect of this isminimised by efficient after-sales support. This is reflected in the resale value. Ofcourse, there are big differences between the products and they are designed and

engineered for their specific applications in which they are used. But, it is by recognising these differencesthat customer expectations are met. “

    “What are your immediate priorities?”

“Sales and service. Like all other companies, we have gone through, and continue to go through, unprecedented market conditions. There is no past experience to draw from. Recovery depends onhaving a strong, highly motivated network of dealers able to deliver expectations as close to the customeras possible. It is not sufficient to have an extensive dealer network. It is essential that the dealerpersonnel and the people within CNH – whether it is CASE or New Holland – supporting dealer activitiesall have a strong belief in the brand and an appreciation of the complete range with all the various optionsand configurations that are available.

People are as important as the product. Trust in people brings trust in the brand.”

“How do you see CNH doing this?”“By focusing on two distinct areas – compact and heavy line. Although customer expectations ofproductivity and reliability are the same for each, the way the customer is approached is very different. It isimportant to recognise these differences and have the strategies in place to provide the most appropriatelevel of service.”

“You mentioned synergies with the automotive industry. Leading manufacturers in the automotive sectorare now offering, as standard, warranties of up to seven years. Do you see this step being implementedwith construction equipment?“

“For many years, customers have had the option to extend warranties on new machines but I believe wecan do more. We have to be prepared to support our claims of reliability and an efficient after-salesservice and we can do this by offering a wider variety of warranty extensions - a sort of ‘warranty plus’whereby customers select the level they require. This can be from the standard warranty through to full-service warranties over a longer period of time.”

“Are you satisfied with the current product-line or do you see areas in which CNH need to be stronger?”

“I think that the existing product range meets current market requirements, but, as the group has shownover the years, new products will be introduced as technology develops and in order to ensure that we

continue to provide customers with the products that best meet theirdemands as a full line supplier.”

“Offering a full-line delivers many benefits to customers. Forinstance, we have recently started offering the Case dozers through thedealer network in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. I appreciate thatthese are not high-volume products but making it available enablescustomers to dedicate themselves to one brand, one supply chain, alower inventory because of greater commonality of parts and faster

A strength of CNH is having enginetechnology within the group to enable

development of advanced engines, whichcan be modified to meet the tougher, moredemanding requirements of the constructionindustry, such as this for excavators.

    service times through familiarity.”

“One Group. Two brands. Doesn’t that create conflict and bring into questionbrand loyalty?

“I know what you mean, but you have to consider where the two brands havetheir roots. New Holland established a strong brand identity in the farmingsector, which it retains today, and developed from there into constructionmarkets.”

“By contrast, Case has is its historic strength and values in the heavy construction sector butdeveloped down to lighter, more versatile, more manoeuvrable products.”

“These two historic backgrounds can still be seen in some of the products - in the overallpresentation and particularly in some of the control systems. Naturally, there are some areas wheredifferentiating between the two brands is not so clear but that is because, like in the automotiveindustry, products have evolved over time and today can appear very similar in design andperformance, but a closer inspection will reveal subtle differences that reflect the customerexpectations.”

“Of course there can be conflicts, but our dealers face conflicts on a daily basis. Each brand isresponsible for its own marketing and sales strategies and its own dealer network.”

“On product development, to what extent will the CNH Group adopt and implement technology?”

“There are two answers to this. One is technology that we are required to introduceby regulations and, two, technology we can introduce to benefit customers.

Of course, many of the regulations introduced bring benefits to thecustomer but can be extremely expensive to implement. Every

engine manufacturer has had to form strategic alliances in orderto offset the huge investments necessary in developing enginesto meet the every demanding emission standards. One reason, perhaps, why today there is an increasing similarity betweendifferent brands. We are fortunate within the CNH Group inhaving a very strong engine division that is able to modify new-technology engines to meet the more durable, rugged and

demanding requirements of construction equipment withoutcompromising performance or productivity.

“With new engine technology, we are not simply taking thenew engines as a direct replacement. We are reworking the

entire power line - hydraulics and transmissions - to ensure thewhole machine is optimized to deliver the efficiencies this technology

makes available. Only by doing this can we maximise on productivity atthe lowest level of fuel consumption.”

“CNH Construction is also fortunate in having access to performance data in commercial truckswhere advanced technology has been increasingly deployed over the years. We can use this dataas a model for developing more automatic features to relieve the operator from unnecessary tasks,to concentrate more on operating the machine. For instance, the machines will be intelligent enoughto select the most appropriate work mode instead of the operator having to choose.

“For certain, machines will become more intelligent and, in the near future, willcommunicate wirelessly with remote centres, sharing data on amounts ofmaterial handled, fuel used, hours operated, etc. to allow better fleetmanagement.

“But we have to be careful. There is a cost to technology, so it isimportant to offer this only where it is a legal requirement or wherethere is a distinct benefit to the customer that will lower owning andoperating costs and add resale value.”

“Henrik, thank you. I appreciate your time and also the fact that you have had verylittle time in which to involve yourself. I look forward to reporting on the progress ofboth New Holland and Case over the coming months.” [CW]

New Holland continues to develop small compact, highly versatile machines as part of the full line

offering to meet customer requirements through theconstruction and related industries.

Continuing our review of Bauma 2010, this month we take a look at what was newfrom some more other major suppliers such as Komatsu as well as profiling someof the more interesting items from the smaller, albeit, still important suppliers ofinnovative solutions.

It is not possible to cover everything that is new but we will be puttingmore items Bauma onto our Contractors World blog. Join in theexchange.

Komatsu is a company that never fails to surprise at majorexhibitions and Bauma 2010 was no exception. The centrepiece and, understandably, getting a lot of attention was the newPC-200-8 Hybrid excavator - the first large production hybridmachine available. Although on show at Bauma, this has beenprogressively introduced around the world and ContractorsWorld featured it earlier this year (read it here).

New wheeled exNew wheeled exNew wheeled exNew wheeled exNew wheeled excacacacacavvvvvator attrator attrator attrator attrator attracts attentionacts attentionacts attentionacts attentionacts attentionBauma 2010 saw the launch of Komatsu’s smallest wheeledexcavator - the PW148-8 with an operating weight of 13.2 to15.8 t. (depending on configuration) and a maximum bucketcapacity of 0.86 m³. The range now comprises 5 models.

This new compact, short tail machine is ideal for job siteswith limited space, in urbanized areas or on narrow roads withheavy traffic - the tail swing radius is just 1.850 mm. Forversatility an auxiliary hydraulic line is fitted as standard to allowfor use of a variety of attachments. A second line is alsoavailable as an option.

Operators of wheeled excavators need a dual purpose cab - apart from the normal attributes associated withexcavators, operators of wheeled excavators can be required to drive long distances between jobs both in both onand off-highway roads. A safe, comfortable driving position is therefore preferred.

As the illustration shows, whether drivingor operating, the cab and seatingarrangement offers good visibility to all criticalareas, with the controls convenientlypositioned. The air-suspension, heated seatis adjustable to suit the particular operatorand working requirement. There is amplestorage space for personal items and theclimate control ensure a comfortableenvironment in all weather conditions.

The sound levels within the cab aretypically 70 dB(A).

The driveline has been completelyredesigned to enable faster travel, up to 35

km/h, and uphill driving speeds. For added convenience, cruise control and a driveline-power-up function are alsostandard equipment.

There are various configurations to meet customer requirements. Maximum breakout force is 93 kN, forwarddigging reach is 9,000 mm, maximum digging depth is 5,745 mm and lifting capacity 5,500 kg alongsideundercarriage at 6 m reach and 1.5 m height.

Serviceability, controls, display panels and KOMTRAX are typical of all the latest Komatsu models.

The FOPS guard system includes a side hinged frontguard, allowing the operator easy access for

periodic windscreen cleaning. The machine is fitted with a laminated front windscreen increasing thealready high standard of operator protection from falling objects. As standard, the cab is fitted with a

roof wiper and can tilt from 0-30º to allow the operator a comfortable and easy view of the worktool.

Also new in the excavator line-up was the 42 t, 1.1 m³ maximum bucket capacityPC350LC-8 Long Reach tracked excavator. With a 17 m excavation boom and arm are

purposely designed to work with the most productive bucket size, it has the versatility towork in relativity light duty work on waterway maintenance as well as in heavy-duty

production work in sand and gravel extraction, as well as slope stabilization, dredging and road construction applications.

Apart from the configuration, the PC350LC-8 Long Reach has all thefeatures and benefits offered across the range including a well designed

operator cab, controls and operating environment and anadvanced engine, transmission and hydraulic system matchedto deliver high productivity with the fuel saving that hasbecome associated with latest electronic control engines.

as the other latest dozers - a new cab, improved power train, automatic gear shifttransmission and a fully automatic lock-uptorque converter.

The advanced electronics constantlymonitor the application demands and, asrequired, will engage the torque converter formore efficient production or supply 100%direct drive in less demanding situations.Komatsu believe that this can reduce overallfuel consumption by as much as 10%.

The new dozer was also an opportunity for visitors to see the improved SIGMA Dozer blade which is designedto maximize productivity in grading and spreading applications. Available on the EX and WX versions, this bladeworks like a V-shape bucket for ideal and aggressive penetration. The standard pitch function has a perfectly flatedge for top grading performance. The blade’s effective capacity and its rolling characteristics have beenimproved, with lateral edges helping to push the rolling material continuously towards the centre. The gives a 15%increase in dozing capacity when compared to a conventional Semi U blade.

For versatility, a straight Power Angle Tilt (INPAT) dozer blade is also available as an option for all models. Foreasier transportation, there is also a fold-up version that was also launched at the show.

It has long been recognized that increasing operator comfort directly influences productivity. The newlydesigned high rigidity cab, with ROPS integrated, now features a fully adjustable air suspension seat and, according to Komatsu “offers the best-in-class visibility”. The cab spring and damper mounts isolate the operatorfrom the machine body to suppress vibrations and lower noise levels - typically 76 dB(A).

To prevent the ingress of dust and water and provide a comfortable working environment the cab also benefitsfrom a high pressure, fully automatic air conditioning unit.

Power is from a Komatsu SAA6D114E-3 6-cylinder common rail direct injection, water-cooled, turbocharged, aftercooled diesel engine delivering 164 kW / 219 HP (ISO 14396). Maximum forwards speed is 11.2 km/h and13.4 km/h in reverse.

At 71.6 t and a 22 m³ capacity blade, the D37fA-6 powered by a Komatsu SAA6D170E-5 common rail directinjection, water-cooled, turbocharged, aftercooled diesel engine rated at 474 kW / 636 HP (ISO 14396) is designedfor high-production work. It benefits from the same engine, transmission and hydraulic features as the D65. For amuch smoother drive and a longer undercarriage life, the K-bogie undercarriage is built with an oscillating idler andflexible mounted boogie systems that allow a high vertical track roller movement. The oscillating idler combinedwith the 8 track roller/K–boogie design supports and guides the undercarriage in all ground conditions.

Once again, the operator’s environment has been improved. The spacious hexagonal cab has tinted windowand a comfortable, heavy-duty and fully adjustablesuspension seat that, for ripping, can be turned 15° to theright, thereby improving rear visibility and reducing neckstrain. The position of the travel control console can also beindependently adjusted fore, aft and in height to fit individualoperator preference. In-cab sound level is typically 77dB(A).

Both models feature advanced control levers that enableprecision working and a large user-friendly LCD colourmonitor enables safe, accurate and smooth work in all light

Both new dozers from Komatsu feature an easy-to-read, easy-to-use large electronic display panel, even in difficult lightingconditions. Komtrax system is also fitted as standard.

Pre-fitted for Auto Greasing system, with a 15% weight reduction and an increasedperformance/weight ratio, the new breaker is both more operator and machine friendly.

Highly durable shock absorbers and silencer plates make it easier to use, and reduces vibrations and operatorfatigue. Vibrations and noise are further diminished due to a gas cushion that absorbs piston recoil, recovering theenergy at the same time, for use in the next impact. Komatsu breakers are not sensitive to higher back pressuresand can be easily fitted to all makes of excavator, including older models. The Komatsu breaker range now coversoperating weights from 75 to 5,000 kg (for machines from 0.7 to 70 tonnes).

Komatsu also used Bauma to show some special application configurations and tools. A key feature on thestand was their new engine technology which Contractors World will be reviewing in a special engine supplementlater in the year.

efficiency andproductivity inthe use ofmodular formwork systems.

One example of this is the new modular slab formwork - E-Deck which thecompany says has been specially developed for slab forming work without the needfor a crane. For rigidity and strength, while keeping weight to a minimum, the newpanels frames are from profiled steel. The facing consists of a 9-layer, 12 mm thicksheet of birch plywood. The end result is that the heaviest modules is a maximumof 20 kg. Steel was used for the frame so that damaged panels can be repaired -something not always possible with aluminium. E-Deck elements are available in arange of 12 dimensions (60x125 cm, 45x125 cm, 30x125 cm, 60x120 cm, 45x120cm, 30x120 cm, 60x90 cm, 60x85 cm, 60x60 cm, 60x55 cm, 30x60 cm, 30x55 cm)allowing a wide range of combinations to meet specified structural dimensions withminimal need for in-fill panels.. The panels can also be used in combination withdifferent support systems. E-Deck is suitable for any slab work up to 30 cm thick. There are two beam dimensions - 235 cm (with drop head 250 cm) and 165 cm(with drop head 180 cm).

FFFFFurther developments in hybrid technologyurther developments in hybrid technologyurther developments in hybrid technologyurther developments in hybrid technologyurther developments in hybrid technologyIt was at Bauma 2007 that Atlas Weyhausen showed their determination to develop hybrid technology. Onceagain, the company revealed just how far the technology has been developed with the advanced prototype AR60wheel loader. Subject to final product evaluation, the model should go into production in 2012, in conjunction withthe implementation of the next emission standard.

This prototype is equipped with a so-called “mild” hybrid system, which features an electric machine that isintegrated within the diesel engine. The rotor of the electric machine replaces the flywheel; the stator of the electricmachine is integrated in the flywheel housing. The travel pump is adjusted by means of an electronic controldevice. With this assembly, the ideal fuel- consumption/output efficiency map of the diesel engine can be attained,as well as an anticipated reduction in fuel consumption of between 10 and 20%.

The system is powered by a Deutz four-cylinder diesel engine with a power output of 36.9 kW / 2,100 rpm. Theconventional flywheel and its housing is replaced by a compact high-capacity electric machine, i.e. a permanentlyenergized synchronized machine with concentrated single dent coils. This permanently energized machineaccounts for an efficiency factor of well above 90 per cent.

The electric machine provides for anominal output of 15 kW at a rotationalspeed of 100 Nm, with a peak capacity of30 kW at a rotational speed of 200 Nm.LINDE, has been working closely withAtlas Weyhausen in helping maximisehydraulic efficiency and produced theadjustable pump unit.

The energy is stored in a bipolar leadacid battery. At this time, this technology isinexpensive but robust for the constructionindustry. The company says that theconsiderable weight of these batteries isnot detrimental to the machineperformance. The hybrid drive systemdoes require a slightly longer machine.More detailed specifications on the

Also new is a climbing bracket system that can be adjusted +/- 15º on thegeometry of the structure. They have a large load-bearing capacity, so that largerformwork units can be transposed and climbing systems used more efficiently.Climbing bracket depth is 2.40 m and can handled live loads of 4.5 kN/m² and 3.0 kN/m² on the working platform, 1.5 kN/m² on concrete platforms or 1.0 kN/m² assuspended scaffolding. Being modular construction, the brackets are easilytransported.

Barbara Vetter, Managing Director said “High flexibility and efficiency, together withsafety at work are the deciding factors in the construction industry today. Theproducts introduced at Bauma can be adjusted to the geometries of the structure inboth residential industrial construction and are designed and engineered to meetthese requirements.”

Paschal is addressing the issue of logistics management of components as well.Their new software system - Ident - uses advanced technology for the first time withformwork systems. During manufacture, RFID transponder chips are embedded

within each formwork component. With a hand-held scanner and corresponding software, each transponder istraceable through its globally unique identification number. This makes it easy to keep track of all the variouscomponents, speeds up design and setting up of formwork when used with the other Paschal software solutionsand helps protect investment. Companies can quickly locate where formwork elements are being deployed.

The standard bucketcapacity is a maximum of 0.5 m³. Power is from a Perkins 403 D-15T diesel engine with rated output of 29.4 kW/ 2,800 rpm; driveis hydrostatic. Lifting and torque forces are impressive for amachine this size - 2.340 daN and 2.500 daN respectively. This, together with a breakout force of 3.170 daN means the machine is

able to work with a variety of material and attachments.

Other wheel loader models were also on display together with the company’s range of compaction rollers whichtoday stands at 5 models. Some of these have had minor modifications to provide more operator comfort andmeet new emission standards, etc. The AR 65 Super showed the steps the company is taking to meet newemission standards; the cab and bonnet have been modified. The interior of the cab is more spacious with allrelevant control ergonomically placed within reach of the arm rest.

There are parallel wipers on the upper right of the cabin. A new roof construction permits a much larger rearwindscreen offering better sight for the user. The doors, now in all-over glass, give an increased visibility. The noiselevel within the climate-controlled cab has been reduced. All existing specifications of this Atlas wheel loaderremain unchanged until the introduction of TIER 4.

PPPPPromoting full line capability with European launch of dozerromoting full line capability with European launch of dozerromoting full line capability with European launch of dozerromoting full line capability with European launch of dozerromoting full line capability with European launch of dozerrangerangerangerangerangeAs part of the new strategy to be a full-line provider around the world, Case used Bauma 2010 to introduce to theEurope, Africa and Middle East region, the new 1650L and the 1150K tracked dozers - high performancehydrostatic drive machines, designed for applications from residential, commercial and highway demands as wellas special applications such as landfill.

A Tier 3 certified Case 6.7 litre engine provides the power for both machines. A net power output of 107 kW and669 Nm of torque is available in the 1650L, while the 1150K has a rating of 88kW with peak torque of 567 Nm. Asthe engine power is sent to the tracks through a dual path PowerStat hydrostatic transmission, utilising variableaxial piston pumps and motors, it provides a maximum drawbar pull of 275.1 kN in the larger machine and 213.5kN in the smaller. The transmission has a single joystick drive control and the operator can choose infinite speedadjustment up to 9.7 km/h, or opt for one of 10 preset speed increments, to suit the application.

Customers have a choice of three undercarriage configurations. The 1650L XLT extra long track, with a 1.87 mtrack gauge and 610 mm track shoes; the 1650L WT wide track, with a 2.13 m gauge and 711 mm wide shoes; andthe 1650LGP low ground pressure machine with the longer 2.13 m gauge and 864 mm wide track shoes.

Ground pressure on the 1650L varies from the XLT at 0,428 bar, to the WT at 0,387 bar and the LGPundercarriage, which puts down just 0,319 bar. All models use the Case Lubricated Track system, which is sealedand lubricated with an oil reservoir in each pin. An optional Case Extended Life Track, with a second hardenedbushing, is available to extend track life in abrasive soil conditions.

Dozers are all about productivity and this is dependent on the blade being able to shift material as efficiently aspossible. The 1650L XLT comes as standard with a 3.2 m blade width with capacity of 3.1 m³. The WT machine

has a wider 3.98 m blade, though withthe same 3.1 m³ capacity, while the LGPmodel uses the wider 3.98 m attachmentwith a 3.2 m³ capacity. With the 6-in-1blade, the special blade curvature designensures good roll-over of material andreduced spillage over the top on to thelinkage.

Case also used Bauma to show it’sstrength in the field of specialapplications such as material handlers,

One word to keep it simple - GOOne word to keep it simple - GOOne word to keep it simple - GOOne word to keep it simple - GOOne word to keep it simple - GOThe Austrian company, Rubble Master, has, in recent years introduced

simplicity in making mobile crushers easy to set up and go: models are designated as such. First there was theRM70 which was redesigned as the RM70 Go and launched at Intermat in 2009.

Bauma saw the latest model to get the upgrade - the RM80 GO with an operating weight of 23,600 kg andpower output of 168 kW/1,800 rpm.

"While other companies took a passive approach during the financial crisis we took advantage of 2010 toconsolidate the position of RUBBLE MASTER, the global market leader for mobile recycling in the compact class,"explains Gerald Hanisch, RUBBLE MASTER founder and CEO. "We used this difficult time to closely examine allour corporate processes, optimize them and significantly streamline the entire organisation. In this respect thecrisis was also a powerful impetus for us to prepare the company for a positive future."

Like the other models in the range, the RM80 GO is designed to minimise set-up time. It is ready for actionimmediately and can work in any environment without limitations.

With the comprehensive RUBBLE MASTER ENVIRO concept, the RM80 GO is whisper-quiet, minimisesemissions and features an effective dust suppression system. A modern engine ensures power as required withfuel efficiency.

With their years of experience in developing mobile crushers, Rubble Master is still aware of the significantpotential for this type of machine.

"There are still many companies – from construction and haulage companies to earth movers, disposaloperations and producers of building materials, ready-mixed concrete and bricks, who haven't properly consideredthe cost benefits they could gain from mobile recycling with compact, high-performance machines," says GeraldHanisch explaining the development of the latest RUBBLE MASTER crushers.

The RM70 Go has already proven itself on such demanding jobs as Ground Zero, New York, USA (below)

With a large, busy stand, Terex left visitors to Bauma in no doubtas to the company’s positive outlook for the future. George Ellis,President of Terex Construction told Contractors World that thecompany was beginning to see stabilization in the markets and anincreasing optimism with room to develop sectors.

Currently access work platforms account for 20% of sales, cranes 48%, construction equipment 23% and material processing9%. This is shared globally with 38% to Europe, 28% to NorthAmerica and 34% to rest of the world.

Matt Fearon, Vice President and Managing Director for Europe,Middle East, Africa shared this view adding that as the worldmarkets emerge from the difficult times Terex would be looking tobroaden the applications in which the company’s access workplatforms fit and develop the significant potential in other industriessuch as aircraft maintenance and shipbuilding where they seemassive potential for access work platforms and telescopichandlers.

Latest examples of these on display included the GS-1932 scissor lift, the GTH-4018 SR telehandler, the GR-20aerial work platform, the GS-4390 RT scissor lift and the S-65 Trax telescopic boom platform.

FFFFFacing up to economic challengesacing up to economic challengesacing up to economic challengesacing up to economic challengesacing up to economic challengesThe company has also taken a positive from the economic difficulties to restructure and eliminate accumulated‘deadwood’ that is common to most companies during growth. While ensuring that quality and customer servicesare not effected , the company actually was able to realise 70% of forecast for 2010 simply by internal savings.Brian Heathcote, Vice President Construction Europe emphasised the progress that the ‘leaner, meaner’ Terexorganisation had made was now beginning to see significant orders come through, especially in the materialhandling sectors.

Newly released models on show included the TA400 articulated dump truck, the TA3.5SH site dumper, theTW110 and TL310 wheel loaders. Brian Heathcote emphasised that although significant internal saving had beenmade, investment in research and development was being maintained and even though Bauma was seeing the

introduction of many new products, there werefurther products coming through. For instance, there will be a new backhoe loader in the 3rdquarter of 2010 (4th quarter for the USA)

Talking for the cranes division, Doug Freisen,Vice President said that the company was in the topthree suppliers in those parts of the world whereTerex traded. Illustrating the company’scommitment to product development, new or

Within the processing division, Patrick Brian, Managing Director said that the global markets had changed andnew markets were emerging with significant potential. He said “Take India as an example, they are targeting tobuild 20 km of new road per day - currently they are managing 9 km per day but the Ministry of SurfaceTransportation were expecting the target to be achieved in 2010.” Showing their willingness to meet the

challenges in this highlycompetitive sector, new orupgraded products included thePowerscreen XR400S jawcrusher, the PowerscreenXH320SR impact crusher, theWarrior 2400 screen, the Finlay694+ screen, the I-130RS impactcrushers and, from Cedar Rapid, the MVP450X cone crusher.

RRRRReady for growtheady for growtheady for growtheady for growtheady for growthRon DeFeo, Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and Director talked of the development of the totalTerex Group.

The company see growth around the world and a great deal of untapped potential, particularly in India, Braziland China. To maintain growth and provide a more solid platform from which to grow, he defended the company’sdecision to sell off the most profitable division - mining - to Bucyrus for in excess of $2,000 million in cash. Thisprovides a basis for the company to implement its growth strategy of “20% per year” through acquisition andinternal growth. “Acquisitions will have to add strategic and financial value as the company concentrates on beingone of the top players.“ Terex is open to potential developments in other product categories outside their currentproducts and markets.

“Alliances may be a way forward - they allow us to reactive quickly to market changes,” said DeFeo who alsosaid that the company is in joint-venture discussions but was unable to say anything at Bauma 2010, “ . . . later thisyear is a possibility,” he added. “Shared facilities for more flexibility and broader based production units areenabling us to get closer to the customers who are today demanding more productivity, more reliability and betterservice support.”
