CAP – 25 years of Impact!A Message from Our Executive Director
On September 24th, 1990 the Certificate of Incorporation was signed creating the Community
Arts Partnership of Tompkins County. For twenty five years the Community Arts Partnership (CAP)
has played a significant role in branding Tompkins County as a cultural destination, a great
place to visit and a better place to live. CAP supports the work of creative people; painters, play
writes, print makers, poets, dancers, photographers, sculptors, film makers, story tellers, and
puppeteers. That’s on Mondays. On Tuesdays we get up and do it all over again.
In purely monetary terms CAP has secured and/or administered over $3.4 million in grants to
local artists and arts organizations since 1992. In 2015 alone CAP will distribute over $266,000
through competitive grants. Creative and engaging projects and programs have been funded in
every corner of Tompkins County.
CAP’s program offerings continue to grow, engaging tourists and residents alike. The Ithaca Artist
Market turned 25 this summer. The CAP ArtSpace gallery has been offering high-quality, monthly
exhibits for 23 years. The Greater Ithaca Art Trail has been combining gorgeous fall colors and
leisurely artist studio visits for 17 years. The relative newcomer, the Spring Write Literary Festival at
6 years old, continues to grow in artistic offerings, public attendance, and audience appreciation.
Our website (www.artspartner.org) provides a comprehensive listing of our programs and services
and we invite you to spend a minute getting to know the Community Arts Partnership better.
So it’s a very happy birthday! Thank you to all who have been a part of the Community Arts
Partnership’s first 25 years. Here’s looking forward to the creativity, vitality, and the art that will
enrich us all in the next quarter century.

CAP, through their various grant programs and services, brings amazing support to artists and producers in the county, and their progressive and understanding vision of the scene pushes Ithaca’s art community forward. CAP is an essential player in the community, not just for financial support, but for the technical assistance and information they deliver to artists. An artistic community is, per definition, attractive – generating job opportunities as well as tourism, and CAP plays a key role in that dynamic. HUGUES BARBIER, Ithaca Fantastic Film Festival
The Arts and Their Community
Art and arts organizations are a unique educational, emotional, and spiritual resource for a
community and they are an economic engine within it, an essential part of its history, identity
and pride. We are at the center of what is best about America.
For our community as a whole, we are, in fact, the glue that keeps that community together. The
arts and the organizations that preserve and present them are among the few institutions where
everyone is welcome – no matter their educational or economic background.
The arts are a forum for the discussion of major ideas, issues and concerns of individuals and
society as a whole, from sustainability to ingrained poverty, race, gender, and much else, not as
an advocate for one partisan point of view or another, but more as a place for the exploration of
these issues in depth, in a place and in a manner that is open, encouraging and safe.
Works of art tell us what human beings can be at their best and at their worst, they are a vivid,
engrossing way of revealing to us our own inner lives, our passions and needs, and those of other
people and other cultures; in this way, they can illuminate social, political and other issues in a
special, unique way.
Arts and art organizations benefit from their communities – they are dependent on them – but
they also give back to them. They are an integral, essential part of a democratic society, a part
of civilization itself.

When Running to Places launched in 2007, we were a scrappy start up youth community theatre with more ideas and passion than resources. CAP awarded us our first grant, which provided more than just a financial boost – it also gave us the respected stamp of approval that led the way for donors and others to support us in those early critical days.JOEY STEINHAGEN, Running To Places

GREATER ITHACA ART TRAIL
The Art trail is a self guided tour of 40 local working artists’ studios spread
throughout Tompkins County. Studios are open year-round by appointment, on
two consecutive October weekends, and the First Saturday of each month. The
ArtTrail.com site has artist profiles and downloadable maps.
CAP ARTSPACE
CAP’s “ArtSpace,” located in Center Ithaca, showcases monthly exhibits and is
used for workshops, Ithaca Downtown Alliance events, and shares space with the
Downtown Visitors Center.
ITHACA ARTIST MARKET
Each year, CAP organizes and facilitates a summer juried show and sale of work by
local artists of all disciplines. The market, located at the Ithaca Farmers Market,
is a banner event and a true showcase of local arts.
ITHACAEVENTS.COM
IthacaEvents.com is CAP’s on-line resource for arts & cultural events in Tompkins
County. The site is used by residents, visitors and front-line staff at hospitality
and tourist properties.
SPRING WRITES LITERARY FESTIVAL
CAP’s annual Spring Writes Literary Festival began in 2009 at the request of New
York State Council on the Arts. NYSCA staff knew there was a wealth of literary
talent in the area, but few opportunities for writers to connect with the book-loving
public. The result was the Spring Writes Festival, which takes place over 4 days
each May, and features over 30 literary themed events. Spring Writes collaborates
with Buffalo Street Books, the Community School of Music and Arts, Cinemapolis,
The Argos Inn, and other downtown locations.
Since 1999, 26,000 visitors have enjoyed the trail. 500 artists have earned $750,000.
Since 2010, 375 authors and playwrights have presented their work to 6,000 regional visitors.
IthacaEvents.com receives 85,000 unique visitors per year.
Since 1994, 40,000 visitors have attended the markets. 1,700 artists have earned over $1,000,000.
Since 1996, 470 artists have hung work in CAP’s Gallery. Gallery Night receptions have brought in 48,000 visitors to our gallery.
