Letter from the CEO and Board Chair2015 was an exciting year for Jewish Senior Life. We made great strides in enhancing quality and choice in senior care. You’ll see some examples of that in this Report to the Community.

Our commitment to our residents and customers guides our decisions. They are at the center of their care planning and decision making. More than just caring for people, we care about them.

We’re very proud to have been one of a select number of organizations recognized by CARF International in 2015 for our high-quality aging and rehabilitation services and our commitment to person-centered care, for those of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds. Our mission since 1920 has been to help older adults thrive in an atmosphere of respect, compassion and individuality, and this accreditation affirms our achievements.

In 2016, our campus expansion begins, including developing “small-home household” environments for our long-term care residents. While our campus will physically transform, ultimately the campus plan is about people—our residents, their families, and our staff. We’ll provide an environment that meets each resident’s needs better than ever before—redefining what “home” means, and revolutionizing care for our community’s elders.

Innovative New Programs in 2015Music & Memory Jewish Senior Life became the first certified care community in the Rochester area to offer the Music & MemorySM program. Caregivers provide iPods with personalized song playlists to residents with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges so they can reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories. Music can help residents shift their moods, manage stress-induced agitation, stimulate positive interactions, facilitate cognitive function and coordinate motor movements.

This program is available thanks to the generosity of Bunny and Mort Skirboll, who were inspired by the program’s targeted approach to reengage and connect with residents suffering from a wide range of cognitive and physical challenges.

Personalized playlists provide wonderful tools for some residents who are unable to verbally express themselves due to their diminishing abilities. They can communicate and express themselves through their emotions and feelings. Jewish Senior Life is committed to the success of the program by establishing “memory coaches” to help identify residents who would directly benefit from the program. “Our residents have seen remarkable success with the Music & Memory program,” says Susan Price, person-centered care manager for Jewish Senior Life.

Palliative and End-of-Life Care Jewish Senior Life secured funding for an initiative to enrich the palliative and end-of-life care services we provide to our residents. This expansion was made possible by a large grant from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation, as well as a generous donation by Clare and Jerry Rotenberg. The goal of the initiative designed by Jewish Senior Life staff is to provide residents and their families with peace of mind in knowing that end of life care planning is in place. In addition, the program will help to provide a supportive and personalized

experience for individuals and families. The initiative was developed by incorporating best practices from the hospice community and findings from the September 2014 Institute of Medicine report on end of life options in America

The specific objectives of the initiative are to increase the percentage of our residents who have completed end of life care planning, reduce the number of residents who are hospitalized or visit the emergency department in the last 30 days of life, and increase the satisfaction of family members related to end of life care that their loved one receives at Jewish Senior Life.

“Being at work is more than just doing our jobs—it’s about bonding with our residents.”

Dan Bentley, Jewish Home Staff,

Connect Two ProgramWhen Licensed Massage Therapist Daniel Bentley joined the Jewish Home team, he was excited to learn about Connect Two, a Jewish Senior Life program which promotes relationships between residents and staff members, enhancing the quality of life for residents and job satisfaction for staff. Dan was paired

with resident Chester “Chet” Krol. Chet and Dan formed a close bond. Getting together once a week, they would

spend time going for walks and talking about any topic that came to mind.

Building for the Future In 2015, our campus expansion plan was finalized. We’ll enhance the living environment for our long-term care residents, who will be able to receive personalized care in “small-home households” in the renovated Jewish Home, as well as in new homes on our campus, built in conjunction with the Green House® organization. In these households, the atmosphere is warm and personal. The comfort of private rooms and bathrooms are combined with the family-like atmosphere of open common spaces, along with unique space for recreational activities and entertainment. This environment will enable our residents to have even more meaningful lives. Green House Project studies show that small-home households provide quality of life and emotional well-being, that residents’ families are happy with the setting, and that the caregivers are very engaged.

In addition, we’ll be expanding our transitional care program in the Jewish Home. We’ll break ground on the new homes in Spring 2016, and the campus transformation will be complete in early 2019. Jewish Senior Life will be one of the largest Green House communities in the nation, and one of the largest transitional care providers in Monroe County.

In 2015, Dan and Chet attended a Connect Two “Country Western” Party, with barbecue style food, entertainment, a sing-along, and even cowboy hats available for everyone to get in the spirit. “Connect Two is a wonderful program,” said Dan. And Chet enjoyed the time he spent with Dan. “So many can benefit from this program, who are lonely and looking for companionship,” Chet said. “Spending a little bit of time with Dan really goes a long way. He’s a real buddy.”

“They were there for me when I needed a little help getting back to myself!” Jean Phillips, patient,

Jewish Home Transitional Care Program

When Jean Phillips was unexpectedly diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) in 2015, her doctor recommended she go to Jewish Home Transitional Care for rehabilitation. Jean was comforted knowing she would be in good hands. The program is recognized as being a leading provider in offering exceptional-quality health care, with a specialty in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation—using the latest technology and a person-centered, team approach.

Jean’s occupational therapist, Gesenia Fontanez, says, “For us, it’s personal—and about what works for our patients. The therapists, nurse managers and doctors collaborate to tailor a plan for each individual.” Jean was soon able to return to her home and resume her normal activities. “Together, we came up with a plan for therapy that would help me regain my strength.” says Jean. “They were very attentive and took the time to get to know me,”

“Living here is like being on a cruise ship! There is always something to do.” Pincus Cohen, resident,

The Summit at BrightonSummit residents say they enjoy living in the only Continuing Care Retirement Community in the Rochester area—Jewish Senior Life offers independent living, assisted living, assisted memory care living and long-term care all on one campus. With Life Care— a program unique to Jewish Senior Life—those who

might need more care in the future can easily move from independent living to assisted or long term, while continuing to pay the lower independent living fee, providing them peace of mind and financial security.

The Summit team is continually innovating to provide a unique, fulfilling resident experience—from dining, to entertainment, to activities. Fresh-grown organic herbs and vegetables from the new Summit organic garden, and fresh honey from new Summit beehives, were incorporated into delicious, healthy meals. Summit entertainment included a popular summer music series and a celebration of Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday, Las Vegas-casino style.

From concerts, to art classes, to educational seminars, there’s something for everyone at the Summit. “Our events are designed to offer companionship and recreation,” says Susan Bussey, Senior Vice President of Housing. “Our residents enjoy quite a vibrant lifestyle!”

“My doctor makes me smile!” Lily Haber, patient, Physician House CallsImagine your doctor coming to your home when you need a check-up or because you are not feeling well. While there, your doctor spends quality time with you, listening to what your medical needs are and takes the time to get to know you better. This concept has become reality, in the form of a unique Jewish Senior Life program for homebound elders: Physician House Calls.

The personal care concept of Physician House Calls is a natural fit for Dr. Brenda Baratta. “I love what I do. It’s the idea of old-fashioned medicine—the doctor making house calls to those who have difficulty getting to an office,” says Dr. Baratta. “Patients want a connection with their doctor—to know they aren’t just another appointment in a rotation of many throughout the day.”

Lily Haber has been a Physician House Calls patient since 2010. “I look forward to my appointments with Dr. Baratta. I can take the time to explain how I’m feeling and I know that she is giving me her full attention.” Dr. Baratta notes, “In this role, I have the ability to impact a person’s life in a personal way and help them with their medical decisions. My role in Physician House Calls gives me joy, and it’s why I love working in medicine.”

“Knowing there is someone who can take care of us, makes me feel better about our future.”Len Metzger, client, Living Well Companion CareLen and Rosalyn Metzger had considered themselves pretty independent, but Len realized over time that they could use a little help with daily activities that were getting too much for them to handle. That’s when he found out about Living Well Companion Care.

Living Well Companion Care provides compassionate, non-medical assistance in one’s own home for a variety of daily activities like meal preparation, transportation to shopping and errands, or escorting to medical appointments. The Metzgers met Maureen DeCross of Living Well Companion Care and instantly hit it off. When Rosalyn’s dietary needs changed, Maureen came up with new dishes to enjoy. She also escorts Len to doctor’s appointments, and does their grocery shopping. Len says that having a companion gives him and his wife great comfort, and he’s happy they have built such a great relationship with Maureen. Len says, “She knows what we need—maybe even before we do!” Maureen even recently helped Len and Rosalyn downsize from their house to an apartment.

Maureen is happy that she can provide emotional support to her clients. “I’ve met some very interesting people through this ‘job’ and it’s been so rewarding. I feel privileged to be able to help people.”

Michael Haymes

A Letter from the Foundation2015 was a special and compelling year for the Jewish Senior Life Foundation. Our new theme for our Campus Plan and Power of One campaign, Redefining Home, Revolutionizing Care, captures for our community the essence of our mission to enhance the quality of life, health and well-being of Jewish older adults, their families and others in our community, consistent with the values and traditions of our Jewish heritage.

We are so grateful to have been able to embrace this mission with your support; the thousands of donors who have helped shape our work and strengthen our commitment to promote meaningful aging. And as we look forward to 2016 and beyond, the continued success of our ability to meaningfully redefine “home” and revolutionize “care” will stand only with your continued support and confidence.

Anyone that has had their lives, their family member’s lives, touched by Jewish Senior Life, will be offered the opportunity to support our bold, innovative, and exciting plans. Each of us has the opportunity to make a dramatic difference in the lives of our elders. We hope you will continue to be our partners in the transformation and revolution; we hope that you will remain the heart and soul of our work.

Thank you very much!

2015 Myron S. Silver AwardIn the spring of 2015, we introduced an exciting new award to the Golden Alliance leadership giving society: the Myron S. Silver Award for Jewish Senior Lifetime Achievement. The award was named for Myron “Mike” Silver in recognition of his lifetime of service to Jewish Senior Life. Mike has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Home or the Foundation for nearly 50 years, has served as a past president of both boards, and has served as co-chair of the Home’s building fund campaign. He helped co-found the Golden Alliance, and was the driving force in the development of the Summit at Brighton and Wolk Manor.

The 2015 award was presented to our first honorees – Essie Germanow and Jim Littwitz, of blessed memory. As chairperson of the Art Committee for over 30 years, Essie has helped select, as well as place, the art throughout our campus. Essie has served Jewish Senior Life in other capacities throughout the years, including chairing our first Golden Alliance event, as well as our 10th and 20th anniversary celebrations. Jim Littwitz helped orchestrate the move of 228 residents from our home on St. Paul Street to our new home at 2021 S. Winton Road. Jim helped coordinate the work of more than 250 volunteers who helped with every detail of this momentous undertaking. Afterward, Jim continued to serve Jewish Senior Life as an active member of the Foundation Board of Directors for many years.

Simply saying thank you to those who have done so much for so many doesn’t seem enough; Mike, Jim, and Essie, we are indebted to you and deeply grateful for all that you’ve done to improve the lives of so many. We are delighted to have established this new award to honor lifetime contributors to Jewish Senior Life.

New Program: Women’s CouncilMona Kolko and Robin Weintraub are two very special women. They have volunteered for numerous organizations throughout their lives, and have known the joy of giving back to others. A little over a year ago, they presented an idea to Jewish Senior Life Foundation leadership to create a group of women to serve as “ambassadors” for Jewish Senior Life throughout the community, and the Women’s Council was established.

Mona and Robin helped recruit a group of like-minded women to serve on the new Women’s Council Steering Committee: Mara Axelrod, Judy Blaustein, Phyllis Bloom, Gail Drew, Heidi Fishman, Nichole Gantshar, Debbie Gordon, Barb Kozel, Robyn Morgan and Karen Rabinowitz. These women will help develop community programs on health and wellness, aging and aging issues; develop connections with other organizations to help support Jewish Senior Life activities, residents and program participants; engage and mentor women to help support the life-enhancing work of Jewish Senior Life; and expand resources for Jewish Senior Life programs and services through special events and other philanthropic activities.

During their first year, the Women’s Council Steering Committee created a four-part Jewish Senior Life orientation program. Future plans include outreach programs to other organizations, and a community event to help raise awareness of Jewish Senior Life programs and services.

Power of One: Redefining Home, Revolutionizing Care2015 was a transition year for Jewish Senior Life and for the Foundation’s work with the Power of One campaign. With a transition in leadership for Jewish Senior Life and a reframing of the Campus Plan, we needed to take a step back in our work while our fundraising continued, to reconstruct our case for support and revisit our communications approach. Only slightly delaying some of our work,

we are proud of our campaign leadership team effort that has our campaign at $19.2 million, 74% of our $26 million goal!

Fully on track for 2016, our team of volunteers and staff are partnering to position us to kick off the public phase of our campaign in June, as part of our campus plan project groundbreaking. We have several significant proposals in donors’ hands and members of our campaign leadership team continue to meet individually with prospective donors to ask for their support. During the last quarter of 2015 we began an aggressive campaign to solicit support from Rochester area businesses, banks, and other funders who support capital projects similar to ours, which will continue through all of 2016.

In Memoriam

We are especially grateful for the longstanding support we received from our donors Jack Erdle, Dr. Jacques Lipson, and Dr. Morris J. Shapiro.

Jack ErdleJack was the founder of the Eldre Corporation in Rochester and Angers, France. He wrote and published his life story, “The Age of Wisdom” for his 85th birthday. Jack was a member of Temple Beth El & Congregation Beth Sholom of Rochester & Temple B’nai Torah of Boca Raton, FL and instrumental in bringing the Chabad-Lubavitch to Rochester.

Jack was extraordinarily philanthropic throughout his life. He believed in giving back to the community where he made his success. He was a significant donor to: Rochester General & Strong Memorial Hospitals, University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, Nazareth College, Temple Beth El, the Jewish Federation, the Jewish Home, the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Service and many other Institutions and Individuals were the beneficiaries of his generosity.

Dr. Jacques LipsonJack was a Rochesterian to his very marrow. Born in the city he loved, he had a community connection that was strong and lasted for his lifetime. He has been called the “Prince of Rochester,” the “Duke of Brighton,” and even a pillar of the community. He was a husband, father, doctor, and philanthropist; his life is an integral part of the greater Rochester Community.

Medicine, music, golf, and the Rochester community were his passions that grew over time. He adored his interactions with his patients, and even hospital rounds were an adventure. He was a lifetime member of the Academy of Medicine and the Monroe County Medical Society. One of the proudest moments was the establishment of the Dawn and Jacques Lipson, M.D. Cancer & Blood Disorder Center.

The affinity he had for the community was something that found its voice in philanthropy. He and his wife strongly believed in the power of arts and education to create a better world for everyone. Jack believed that success requires imagination and the ability to dream. Without that, the abilities within each of us are chained and one cannot reach his or her full potential. To that end, he was active on multiple boards and established opportunity funds and centers for growth in a variety of areas: State University of New York College at Brockport, Nazareth College Arts Center, Nazareth College’s Wellness & Rehabilitation Institute, University of Buffalo’s Dawn & Jacques Lipson Scholarship Fund, Monroe Community College’s Dawn & Jacques Lipson Scholarship Fund, Eastman School of Music’s Lipson Scholarship, and others.

Dr. Morris J. “Morrie” ShapiroMorrie was born and raised in the Rochester community. He attended East High and the University of Rochester, receiving a bachelor of arts degree and a master of science degree. He received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College, receiving the Gold Medal Award for being the first in his class for four years. His surgical residency was at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Shapiro volunteered, alongside his wife, at Pearl Harbor. He served in the military four years in Africa and Italy, earning four battle stars and Campaign Ribbons. Dr. Shapiro practiced surgery until 1983 and since then taught medical students at the U of R Medical School, receiving the Gold Medal Teaching Award. Organizations across Rochester have benefited from Dr. Shapiro’s founding efforts, president- and vice president-ship, membership on their Boards, dedicated teaching, and generous financial contributions.

Morrie’s greatest activities have been on behalf of the Jewish community. He has been on numerous boards and committees, served as president of multiple organizations, chaired fundraising committees, founded leadership circles, and sat on many boards and cabinets of these organizations: the Golden Alliance at the Jewish Senior Life Foundation, the United Way, the Jewish Community Federation, the Jewish Home of Rochester, the Jewish Community Council, the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Rochester, the Rochester Committee for State of Israel Bonds, the Jewish Community Center, and the Board of Jewish Family Service, the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), and the national cabinet for State of Israel Bonds.

The Foundation shares with great sadness the passing of the following members of our community who were lost since 2014; may their legacies shine forevermore:
