Bald eagle | Bob Jensen Dear Friends of the Santa Barbara Zoo,

For the third straight year, the Zoo set a new attendance record.

More than 498,000 guests visited in 2013, almost 17,000 guests

ahead of record-setting 2012! this was the perfect ending to

the Zoo’s 50th anniversary year! there was so much to celebrate

throughout the year, but most notable was the significant

progress on the construction of Discovery Pavilion.

From a bare, cleared site in January to a nearly-completed

structure in December, the new education building became

a reality for those who had waited more than 30 years to see

this vision for the Zoo realized. thanks to a second major

gift from the Dreier family in December and the support

of hundreds of donors and volunteers over the years, the

Discovery Pavilion campaign met its goal of $7.5 million.

the Zoo dominated local news with the births of Dane

and Sunshine, the Masai giraffes, in april. the giraffe calves

arrived within ten days of each other, and proved to be media

magnets throughout the year.

Duncan, the Zoo’s celebrated t. rex, was joined by two more

dinosaurs in time for this summer’s show, “Dino Doc.” lily, a

parasaurolophus (say that three times really fast!), and tulip,

a baby triceratops, expanded the Zoo’s family of popular

performing puppets, a trio sponsored by the Duncan family.

nancy Mctoldridge (Zoo Director), Carol Bedford (CFo), Dean

noble (Director of Marketing), and Dave Velazquez (Director

of Guest Services) were all honored by the Pacific Coast

Business Times for their professional contributions to the Zoo

and our community. the Zoo also retained its position as the

second most attended museum-like venue in the tri-counties

area, following Hearst Castle. and the Zoo continued to reign

as the most popular family attraction in the Santa Barbara

News-Press Readers’ Choice Awards.

In august, Zoofari Ball XXVIII: rock & roar set an all-time

attendance record with over 650 attendees. union Bank

stepped up to be the “naming sponsor”—a first for this event!

In December, we were thrilled to announce a new

partnership with Gold Coast toyota Dealers. the dealerships

contributed three new 2014 toyota 4runners to the Zoo’s

field conservation program. the three vehicles have

significantly expanded the Zoo’s capacity to support field

conservation programs!

Can the Zoo continue this record-setting pace of attendance

and performance in 2014? We think so! the Zoo’s team of

outstanding professional staff and volunteers has consistently

delivered memorable guest experiences, met the highest

standards of animal care, and participated in important field

conservation programs. It’s also important to acknowledge

that the significant progress in improvements to our facilities

and programs would not be possible without the generous

support of our donors, members, and friends. together, we are

building a great institution that touches millions of lives through

inspiring Zoo experiences, stimulating education programs, and

substantial local field conservation activities. Join us in making

there is no way to choose a single

highlight of the year when two giraffe

calves are born ten days apart! Dane

and Sunshine were born in april and

continued to delight both guests and staff

throughout the year. their births were

important to the north american captive

Masai giraffe population, marking the first

offspring from Michael, their genetically

valuable sire. Michael also excelled at

the giraffe feeding deck this year, where

he played a major role in providing

an inspiring connection with 78,785

guests. animal Care staff did their share

of inspiring and educating, giving 2,302

keeper talks in 2013!

For the first time in our

Zoo’s history, western

chuckwallas hatched! All

seven eggs laid by the

female chuckwalla hatched

successfully after being

carefully managed in an

incubator for almost three

months. The hatchlings

were cute, fast, and full

of personality from the

beginning, and they will

debut as education contact

animals in 2014.

The year was filled

with matchmaking,

or at least valiant

attempts at it. Animal

Care staff managed

the introductions of:

two young lionesses

to Chadwick, the male

lion; the new young

male Amur leopard,

Wyatt, to aging female,

Samantha; the young female anteater to the

genetically valuable German male anteater;

the female rhinoceros hornbill to her

attractive new male partner; and a breeding

pair of toucans that arrived in 2012.

Of these attempts, only the anteater and toucan

pairings were truly successful. It remains to be

seen whether young anteaters or toucans will

be born in 2014, but the pairs got along and

showed appropriate breeding behaviors.

The lionesses were wild about Chadwick, but

he would not give them the time of day, and

Samantha found Wyatt to be just too eager

for her taste. The rhinoceros hornbill female is

still deciding if this male is her type, but that’s

her prerogative.For the first time in our

400 annual physical exams, 150 anesthetic

procedures, and gave 250 vaccinations

throughout the year as part of the ongoing

outstanding care the animals at the Zoo receive.

Generous donations and grants enabled us to

take advantage of technology, improving our

care and management of the collection.

see that the female chuckwalla was gravid

(carrying eggs), prompting keepers to move

her so she could lay eggs safely off exhibit.

observation of the expectant mothers

throughout the night...without Zoo staff

having to sleep in the barn!

and Henry Bull Foundations, allowing for

incredibly-detailedimagesoftheZoo’saging

elephants’ feet (they look good!).

As of December 31, 2013, the Santa Barbara Zoo’s animal

collection consisted of 484 individual animals representing 146

species. Of these 146 species, 41 are included in the Species

Survival Plan program, and our staff collaborated with other

zoos to ensure the animals’ sustainability, both in zoos and in

the wild.

began in 1974 as a way for

individuals, corporations, and

organizations to sponsor the

animals that captivate, inspire,

and amaze Zoo guests of all

The Keeper Aide and docent programs welcomed new volunteers this

year. After completing eight weeks of training, 26 volunteers graduated

from the docent program. The Keeper Aide program (previously known

as “Animal Care Aide”) saw an increase of 33 new volunteers.

recording their guest interaction numbers, or the

number of individuals they educated about the Zoo’s

collection and conservation messages. This data

provides the Conservation and Education departments

with important insight into community outreach. From

January to December 2013, docents interacted with

28,065 guests. We look forward to watching this number

grow along with the docent program.

The docents would like to extend their gratitude to the Junior League of

Santa Barbara for their generous donation of new books for Storytime

at the Zoo. From April to October 2013, docents read to 1,676 guests,

and they look forward to adding new stories to their collection in 2014.

Storytime occurs from springtime through Labor Day.

The California Condor Nest Guarding

program, a collaborative program between

the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and

the Santa Barbara Zoo, has shepherded

the successful fledging of 22 wild condor

chicks since 2007. This year, the team

helped to fledge four chicks, assisted in

nest entries and emergency evacuations,

continued to monitor the southern

California population, and helped add two

new remote nest cameras to record chick

development out in the wild.

of extinction. Today, thanks to the work of the Santa Barbara Zoo and

its partners in fox recovery, many of the populations are returning to

historic numbers that were recorded prior to the dramatic decline.

Management efforts continue to ensure the survival of these incredible

creatures. The Zoo works with the National Park Service to monitor fox

populations on the northern Islands and prevent future declines.

The Zoo joined the U. S. Geological Survey in 2012

to help monitor the southern sea otter as the

species returned to southern California. This year,

staff participated in an effort to double the number

of tagged otters in the southern population. We

continue to monitor the

spatial distribution, social

dynamics, and breeding

success of these tagged

otters to learn more about

the local population and

its interaction with the

nearshore habitat.

throughout Los Padres National Forest.
