CENTER COMMENTS
In SEIAC Newsletter 2 some of the importantagencies which assist the practitioner or researcher whoseeks information in the area of science education weredescribed. Mail received at this Center and otherindividual reports indicate that many teachers andother persons were previously unaware of these servicesand that they are not presently aware of two of the basicservices provided by the ERIC system, Research inEducation and the ERIC Document ReproductionService. In this newsletter these two services will bedescribed, and addresses for obtaining more informationconcerning these services will be provided.
During the past several months we have receivedmany requests for descriptions of outdoor educationprojects and requests for names of persons directingsuch projects. This interest reflects both the awarenessof the need for such programs as well as the decisions bymany school districts to proceed to develop outdooreducation programs and facilities. The staff of thisERIC Center has reviewed the literature concerningsuch programs and has compiled a listing of outdooreducation programs. The list in this newsletter providesexamples of various kinds of programs distributedthroughout the United States. A brief description isprovided for each project.
RESEARCH IN EDUCATION
In Newsletter 2 the role of various informationagencies in bridging the gap between research andpractice was identified and several agencies engaged inthis activity were listed. With this goal in mind- -providing information to improve the quality ofeducation in the United States - -the Office of Educationestablished Research in Education (RIE). Contained inthis periodical are descriptions of documents whichconcern all areas of education. Published monthly, RIEcontains materials supplied by all ERIC InformationAnalysis Centers. Each issue contains report and projectresumes. The report resumes are indexed according tothe author, the institution sponsoring the report, andaccording to the subject covered by the report, Project

Many cf the various information agencies described inNewsletter 2 provide brief abstracts or annotations ofcurrent literature and in so doing, keep the researcherand practitioner abreast of ongoing research in aparticular area. However, there will inevitably be thetime when the researcher must refer to the original textof a particular document. If this is the case, theresearcher will probably avail himself of the services ofthe ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS).Established by the Office of Education to promote theflow of information in the field of education, the serviceprovides reproductions of many documents at aminimal cost to the researcher. Reproductions are eitheron microfiche, a form of microfilm, or on hardcopy, apaper copy similar to the product of the Xerox-process.The prices of hardcopy for individual titles are twelvecents for the first page and four cents for each additionalpage. The SEIAC staff has compiled thisdirectory of outdoor education programs to provideinformation for schools or organizations planning todevelop such programs.
