REPORT ON THE NORTH WILLIAMS TOWNSHIP BARITE PROSPECT

EXPLORATION PROJECT OCTOBER - DECEMBER 1991

SUMMARY

Two proximate barite occurrances were to be investigated for

their potential as a source of barite fillers. Information

particularly sought was size and geometry of the deposits,

chemical and physical properties, milling characteristics, and

customer acceptance of the filler product.

The project was only partially successful in achieving its

objectives, largley because the late fall start-up and slow

progress ran into increasingly severe winter conditions, which

limited and finally curtailed all work. As a result, efforts

were mainly confined to "A" vein which initial investigations

indicated to be the most promising.

Information on the geometry of "A" vein was obtained, but more

is needed, and information was obtained on the physical and

chemical properties of the barite, but insufficient material

was obtained to conduct milling tests or provide commercial

size test lots for customer evaluation.

"A" vein, as determined thus far, is of exceptional purity and

generally of a good white colour. The deposit appears to be of

sufficient size to warrant extraction, but unit costs may be a

little high and may only support the production of high quality,

more expensive, micronized fillers.

The project warrants further work - to complete and expand on

the 1991 program.



BACKGROUND

The world barite filler industry suffers from low commodity

prices and weak markets. Domestically the industy is further

aggravated by a steady drain of traditional markets relocating

to other countries, and the disproportional high cost of doing

business as compared to other locales.

This situation has prevailed for the past five years, and is

accelerating, and for Extender to continue to be a significant

participant in the industry, we have concluded that we must

(1) emphasize the production of high quality, more expensive fillers, and (2) source mill feed from deposits requiring the

minimum of sophisticated expensive mining.

The probability of finding deposits meeting these criteria is

reasonably good. The North Williams Township barite is one

example. Extender has held these claims for many years, but

because of the land caution, only minor trenching and drilling

was done with inconclusive results. With recent developments

however, the property is again available for exploitation and

should be further investigated.

REPORT ON NORTH WILLIAMS TOWNSHIP BARITE PROSPECT


OBJECTIVES

To delineate a barite deposit having a good white colour and

of such purity as to require minimum beneficiation, that can

be simply and quickly recovered with little waste rock contam

ination, and to test the acceptance of the filler produced

therefrom in the paint and plactic trades.

The high purity will result in the extraction of a minimum of

rock, no tailings, minimum beneficiation cost, and the lowest

possible freight costs per barite unit shipped.

The high purity and white colour will be suitable for the paint,

plastic and adhesive trade.



MOBILIZATION S. PERSONNEL

A temporary camp was established on site during the first week

of October, comprising two portable trailers, a portable magazine,

a knockdown store house and knockdown dry.Major equipment brought on site - 1h yd. O&K track backhoe, John

Deere 450C bulldozer, Coventry washing pump, Garnder Denver

750 CFM portable compressor, Boyles drill, and ancilliary pumps,

and a Champion grader.

The camp was serviced and supplied by bi-weekly deliveries via

a tandem truck from Matachewan and four times weekly by a half

ton pick-up.

Food was prepared basically at Matachewan by the mine cook, and

delivered by pick-up truck.

Crew were on site from the beginning to end of the program,

rotating out on average one day per week. Personnel comprised

Wilf Gratton, driller mechanic, Mark Bisson and Yvon Rondeau,

machine operators, Maurice Roy, truck driver, Roger Boudreault,

miner, Robert Hill and Reg Viel, alternate p.u. drivers, and

Rose Vallee, Cook.

The on-site supervision was by Reg Viel, and the overall program

was under the direction of Robert Hill.

Consulting service was provided by William Hicks, who visited

the property, logged the core and reported on Mineralogy and

Geology.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

(a) Clearing and exposing vein.

The two barite veins "A" and "B" were randonly trenched over

several hundred feet and "A" vein, which appeared the widest,

was then selected as the first target.

"A" vein was serviced by an eight hundred foot road to provide

access, and then cleared as completely as possible by the 1^ yd,

backhoe, the bulldozer, hand shovelling, and finally by washing,

The vein was cleared for an overall length of eight hundred

feet, extending N-E from the hydro right of way, towards Tracey

Lake, at which point the depth of overburden prevented further

tracing of the vein.

As a means of obtaining information on the surface plan of the

vein, the method employed to clear the vein was adequate, but

as preparation for the removal of the bulk sample it was less

so. The irregular surface required a great deal of hand

shovelling and washing to deliver up a contaminate free area

for the bulk sample, and with freezing conditions in November,

the work became slower and ultimately impossible.



DESCRIPTION OF WORK

(b) Diamond Drilling.

The cleared portion of the vein was drilled from both sides on

approximately 150 ft. centres to a depth of about 100 ft.

Initially 5/8" E core barrel was recovered, but it was too

small to distinguish blockage in soft barite, and several holes

were lost because core was ground. A change to thin wall A core

(l 3/8") solved the problem. Another surprising difficulty was

caused by underground cavities which the drill could not cross

and four holes were lost as a result. Throughout the drilling

program, there was difficulty obtaining water. Eventually

sumps were dug and water pumped from Tracey Lake. Generally the

ground offered good drilling and full core barrels could be

recovered, except where the fracture pattern in the rock closely

paralleled the dip of the hole, which resulted in wedging and

blocking. Finally, one hole was abandoned due to losing the

bit and one hole 91-20 stopped because of time constraints.

It will be completed in the '92 season program. Altogether total

footage drilled was 1750 feet.

(c) Bulk Sample.

The program called for a 3000 ton bulk sample to be extracted,

beneficiated, milled to various micron sizes and sent to customers

for evaluation in commercial runs. From this work we would

expect to obtain information on the mechanics of mining the

deposit, particularly the competancy of the enclosing wall rock,

dilution of hte barite,beneficiation required and milling

characteristics, all of which would bear on the economics of

utilizing the North Williams barite as a source for the production

of fillers.

At the N-E end of the cleared vein where it disappeared into the

swamp, it was proposed to establish two six foor benches and

carry them back the width of the vein (or four feet minimum) along

strike a length of 300 ft. In the event however, it became

apparent that an unacceptable amount of clay from surface and

cracks became mixed with barite during blasting, which in turn

adhered to the barite as small frozen waste fragments. It was

hoped that these impurities would be dislodged during the process

of crushing at the mill, but this was not the case. This problem

could be controlled during a summer operation and further work

was postponed until spring '92.

To date the bulk sample is drilled off and about one third

broken, but little information has as yet been obtained. Thus

far, then, the only information obtained from the bulk sample has

been as a result of laboratory analysis of small samples and

limited information on the competancy of the wall rock.



HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY

In 1972 a prospector Roy Annette, following reports of barite

in North Williams Township, found a small vein about l foot

wide on the present property. Subsequent prospecting uncovered

a wide (9 foot) vein about 600 feet south of the initial

discovery. Four claims were staked by Extender Minerals of

Canada Ltd., but minimal work was done due to the caution.

In 1977 Extender Minerals diamond drilled two holes and the

work is reported in the Ministry Assessment Files. The property

continues to be held by Extender Minerals.



GENERAL GEOLOGY

The geology of the western portion of North Williams Township

is shown by Card (1973) to consist of a cover of the Gowganda

formation with some exposed Proterozoic intrusives. In a

more detailed map, (Long and Colvine 1986) subdivided the

late precambrian rocks in the same part of the township into

Gowganda and Cobalt formations and Proterozoic intrusives.

North Williams Township is at the edge of a large area of

Huronian sediments stretching south and east. Work on this

property was confined to the barite veins.

GEOLOGY OF THE PROPERTY

Two veins of high quality barite are contained in a Proterozoic

intrusive immediately east of Tracey Lake. The veins strike

approximately north-east and dip about 75 degrees south-east.

The intrusive host rock consisted of three formations listed

in order of quantity.

1. Dark green fine grained mafic rock. It is characterized by

euhedral to subhedral lath-like and acicular feldspar crystals.

Chlorite, replacing amphibole or pyroxene occurs interstitially.

Fine grained secondary calcite is found abundantly through parts

of the rock. Relatively coarse secondary quartz, and equally

coarse calcite are seen in some sections of the rock suggesting

filled viscicules. Feldspar is altered to saussurite and to

sericite. Fresh secondary albite is present. (Photos l, 2.)

2. Pink to reddish coloured felsic rock. This rock exhibits

most of the textural features of the mafic type, particularly

the lath-like and acicular feldspar crystals. Generally

speaking it does not have as much mafic material as the former.

In addition, the amount of quartz varies enough so that in places

it could be classified as a syenite. In the drill core, it

frequently shows no distinct contact with the mafic type; instead

the two rocks grade into one another. It is thought that the red

rock may be a phase or an alteration product of the dark

green variety (Photos 3, 4, 5.)

Thin section examination concludes that the felsic type is

a hematized phase of the dark rock. Hematite is found as a

fine dust throughout the felsic variety. It appears to have

been derived from oxidation of primary magnetite.

The two rock types are classified as SYENODIORITE and as

HEMATIZED SYENODIORITE.

3. A black extremely fine grained feldspathic rock was

encountered in three of the holes. It is made up of masses

of minute bladed feldspar crystals in a very dark matrix.

In thin section, under intense substage lighting, the matrix

was seen to be devitrified glass with considerable opaque

magnetite. The driller reported a black sludge while passing

through this formation. The rock is a DIABASE DIKE. Although

this black rock is not of significant volume, being only

l foot wide and encountered only in one part of the property,

it could be a useful marker horizon in future drilling.

THE ORE POTENTIAL - BARITE VEINS

Barite has been found as the principal mineral in two veins,

striking north-east and dipping 75 degrees south-east.

So far exploration work has been concentrated on the wider

vein 600 feet south of the initial discovery.

Surface stripping, trenching and drilling have revealed good

quality barite, traceable for 800 feet.

The barite varies in colour from white to grey to pale pink.

It grinds to a high quality product.

Calcite is the only other mineral in the barite vein. Its

occurrence is of local extent and it does not appear to be an

impurity of significance. Spot assays of 9 drill core samples

showed 100?; barite, except for 2 samples with visible calcite

and host rock fragments.

The barite vein pinches and swells for 2 feet to 9 feet on

surface. Drill intersections average 5 feet of barite for a

true width of 3 to 4 feet. The vein also displays local curves

and bends along its general north-east strike. Carried

underground such changes in strike caused anomalous drill core

intersections of 23 and 24.5 feet as in holes 2 and 3.

Conclusion - the drilling program confirmed the underground

extent of the surface exposures.

ECONOMICS

The premininary studies preceding the "91 OMIP project estimated

North Williams Township barite to be a viable source to supply

the Matachewan mill, would have to be mined, crushed, concen

trated and delivered to the mill for $45-55/MT. This season's

work suggests this figure can probably be achieved, but confirm

ation must wait upon the completion of the '92 program.

With respect to (1) physical and chemical characteristics of the

barite - it is pure enough to be acceptable in all applications

excepting where ppted BaSO4 is required. The colour for the

most part is only slightly off white making it satisfactory for

all applications, excepting white primer paint.

(2) Mining characteristics - over the drilled

area most of the vein is wider than the minimum mining width and

dips close to vertical, thus lending itself to a shrinkage or

modified rill mining method, both of which allow close control

on mining with a minimum of dilution.

(3) Tonnage - vein "A" has continuity over 800 ft,

of strike and has not been defined in either direction. Also

the vein has not been defined at depth, although it narrows down

dip. Consequently more work is required to fully delineate

vein "A" and also vein "B". However, based on the information

in hand thus far, there is a reasonable possibility that the

entire mill feed requirements could be sourced from this deposit

for several years. If this proves not the case - if the tonnage

is too small, and/or costs to the mill too high to accommodate

the production of the cheaper filler grades - it appears very

probable that this barite source can still be utilized to supply

the smaller quantities of higher priced micronized barite fillers,

RECOMMENDATIONS

(1) The '91 OMIP objectives should be completed.

(2) Two D.D. holes should be drilled to cut the barite at

250 feet below surface.

(3) Further reconnaissance exploration should be carried out

on the claim group and expanded to surrounding township. In

this regard it is possible that the high purity of the barite

veins would have an anomalous gravity profile that could be

located by geophysical traversing, and this should be tested over

the two know veins.
